Chapter 44: Priests, Levites, and the New Order of Temple Service
1. what is the temple?
In verse 1, the east-facing gate of the temple, the so-called main gate, is commanded to remain closed and not be opened. This is because God, who has returned to the temple, has determined that He will never leave it again, but will be present there forever. Therefore, he says that no one may enter the temple through the gate with its symbolic significance. Even the king of a nation should not use that gate. When entering the Temple, one must always enter through another gate. However, there was a separate building where the priests ate (42:13), but not for the king, so the king is allowed to eat his bread inside that gate.
Anyway, for this reason, Ezekiel also entered the temple through the northern gate (v. 4). And when he entered the temple, he found it filled with the glory of the Lord. There he bowed down and worshiped the glory of the Lord. Then God tells us what He wants us to do about the temple. In Israel's history, the temple has been treated so profanely (Isaiah 1:13). God told the earlier prophet Isaiah that he had had enough of your worship (v. 6). Then, about 200 years later, He says the same thing to the prophet Ezekiel. It seems to me that the ages repeat themselves. In the end, I wonder how God views our worship. I wonder if the worship we are offering is actually self-satisfied, self-indulgent, and in the eyes of God, "enough is enough.
2. those who should serve in the temple
Verse 9: "No alien nation, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in body, shall enter my sanctuary. The foreign peoples referred to here were prisoners of war. This is the part that needs to be explained in detail for understanding. In other words, the people in question in this passage are the Levites who served in the temple. In the time of Moses during the Exodus, the Levites were the tribe responsible for carrying the ark of the covenant and serving in the tabernacle and sanctuary. However, as times changed and the Tabernacle was abolished and the Temple was built in the time of David and Solomon, many of their services were no longer needed, and instead, they were assigned to guard the newly built Temple, sing, and serve as priests, which was only permitted to some of the Levites, those of the house of Aaron. They also began to play an educational role in teaching the people. However, it is believed that the work of the temple, which was considered lowly, such as guarding the temple gate and slaughtering and dismembering animals brought in as sacrifices, was assigned to war prisoners of war. But Israel's religion was corrupted by laziness and unfaithfulness to God, such as entrusting to prisoners of war the work that should have been done by themselves. Therefore, it is commanded that the work in God's temple, even if it is considered lowly work, should once again be done by Levites, not foreigners. They are commanded to once again be in charge of the menial work of the temple (11, 14) and not to work as priests (13).
And they are limited to serving as priests only to the descendants of Tsadok, who was faithful in his duties among the Levites (v. 15). Tsadok was a priest who directed and served David's successor Solomon.
What is important is faithfulness to God in His temple, and verses 17-22 speak of the priest's desire to honor God and be faithful to Him in each of his actions. This is the sign of the church and a testimony to unbelievers.
ãVerses 28 and following speak of the portion that such priests receive and the life they should support. Priests are to fulfill their duties by concentrating on the things of God at all times. Therefore, their lives must be supported by their work. The life of a pastor must be considered in the same way. The duties of a pastor are not well understood in Japan without a Christian background. It is a responsibility and a blessing of the congregation belonging to the church to support the pastor in his/her life by devoting himself/herself to his/her duties. Let us pray together for this blessing to further the mission of all churches in Japan. I pray that today will be another good day.
