1 Kings Chapter 7 Construction of Solomon's Palace
1. Solomon's Temple
Solomon built his own palace after the construction of his temple. It is 46 meters long, 23 meters wide and 13.5 meters high, making it even larger than a temple. The "Palace of the Forest of Lebanon" was probably associated with the "four rows of cedar columns" and had a forest-like appearance. In fact, this palace was not only used as a place for the king to judge (ver.7), but also as a national treasure house, displaying tribute treasures (10:16-17). His house is said to have been in the garden behind the throne hall.
However, the actual location of Solomon's Palace is unknown. It is generally said that it was between the northern end of the city of David and the temple, that is, the southern end of the temple hill. However, according to Tel Aviv University archaeologist Professor Usshikin, Solomon may have built his palace on the north side of the temple, rather than on the south side of the temple, which scholars have generally claimed. In other words, on the south side, it seems that the noise of people coming and going from the town of David to the temple was annoying. However, considering the topographical features of the north side, it is a place where enemies can easily invade, so it is assumed that a moat was built further north of the palace.
2. Solomon's life
In any case, it seems that Solomon was never satisfied with the construction of such a wonderful temple and palace (Evangelist 2:10, 11). ” No matter how rich his life may be, he will not be satisfied with it. Even if he dresses himself up with various goods, titles, honors, and positions, he is unsatisfied with the greed of the heart. An old man said that he wanted to travel abroad as much as he wanted after he retired, and he tried to do so, but in the end he got tired of it and wasn't satisfied. After all, it’s the same wherever he go. Certainly, people cannot be satisfied with things. It is that kind of life that you will find that you become a Christian and continue your religious life. There are times when it becomes clear that a fulfilling mind is more important than a material abundance. Paul is praying to know” the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:18), and that is exactly the blessing. It is the most important thing for human beings to be aware of and enjoy the blessings on earth. If you understand that, you should say that the world is also paradise.
3. Furnishings
From verse thirteen onwards, it is a list of the furnishings of the temple that was created. The pillars of Yakin and Boaz, that is, two bronze pillars (verses 15-22), the sea of bronze, that is, a huge basin (verses 23-26), and a mobile pedestal (27-39) for mounting and moving the basin. It is recorded that the furnishings of the temple of the gods were made and decorated, such as the section). Hiram, who completed this work, is said to be a Naphtali widow and his father is a Tyre. In ancient architectural literature, the name of the architect was often mentioned, but this kind of introduction seems to be disgraceful in a sense. However, before God there is neither a widow nor a Gentile child. Rather, isn't it that God properly uses the gifts and talents of each and every one of them, regardless of their birth or upbringing? In that sense, one should devote himself to blooming in his own way. That's what it means for him to take good care of himself. People do not want to imitate others and try to excel on others, but just want to devote themselves to what they are willing to do with a full heart of faith. I pray that today will be a good day.
