Planting rice plants

2010-06-12 | rice field (farming)

Sound of engine was heard from early in the morning around my house these days.
Farmers were planting rice plants here and there.
My husband also began to plant them on June 10 and finished it today.
Now frogs are singing their songs in the rice fields happily.

Preparation for planting

Water from the pond began to fill the rice fields and farmers are busy in preparing for planting rice plants.
My husband also stirred our rice fields filled with water with the machine yesterday.

Stirring the rice fields, many swallows were flying over the rice field to catch tiny insects or worms.
They are also busy in feeding their baby birds.

Almost finished

Most of rice plants around my house and ours has been reaped.
Some kinds of agricultural machines and implements needed for harvesting had been  broken down, so my husband asked a farmer to harvest.
He reaped them yesterday and today.
We will be able to eat delicious rice before long !

Harvest

It's the beginning of harvest now.
Rice plants grew well and the farmers began to harvest them.
This beautiful scenery will disappear before long.
Now typhoon no.18 is in the south of  Japan and it may attack Japanese island .
Farmers are worrying about it because the rain and wind may give damage to rice plants.
It will make harvesting difficult.

About 80 days have passed since we planted rice plants.
They are growing well and I saw the flowers of this plant the other day.
Ears of rice plant are also growing well day by day.
We had less hours of sunlight than usual year in this summer, so  crop prospects is worse.
But I hope we have good harvest in this fall !

Spinach

My mother-in-law Shi-zu-sa-n had been growing various kinds of vegetables for many years, but she became too old to grow them.
So my husband decided to do that and he had bought some kinds of vegetable seeds and scattered them in the field the other day.
He planted potatoes cut into some pieces too.
He is very enthusiastic now.

Onion

Recycling

2009-03-09 | rice field (farming)

Do you know what this is ?
The brown things in the rice field are compost that is made of dried rice plant straw and cow's excrement.
This compost will be mixed with the soil to grow good rice plant.
It is better than c
ommercial fertilizer for our health as well as good recycling.
