最後の晩餐
聖書には、イエスが引き渡される前に、弟子たちと最後の食事を共にし、自分の記念としてこの食事を行うよう命じたことが記されている。これが「最後の晩餐」である。共観福音書によればイエスはパンを取り、「これがわたしのからだである」といい、杯をとり「これがわたしの血である」といって弟子たちに与えた。『コリントの信徒への手紙一』 (11:23-26) にも述べられており、初期からこの儀式が教団内で行われていたことが分かる。

The True Meaning of Christmas
Paganism, Sun Worship and Commercialism

By Vexen Crabtree 2008

Christmas is the celebration of the time when the days start to lengthen, which in the Northern Hemisphere, is in the middle of winter. Many religions in history have claimed the winter solstice as a holy day. The "reason of the season" is a combination of different traditions. It includes sun worship and pagan nature religions who have venerated the natural cycle for many thousands of years. Many traditional elements of Christmas pre-date Christianity1.

Choice of December 25 date
In the 3rd century, the date of birth of Jesus was the subject of both great interest and great uncertainty. Around AD 200, Clement of Alexandria wrote:

“ There are those who have determined not only the year of our Lord's birth, but also the day; and they say that it took place in the 28th year of Augustus, and in the 25th day of [the Egyptian month] Pachon [May 20] … Further, others say that He was born on the 24th or 25th of Pharmuthi [April 20 or 21].[49] ”
In other writing of this time, May 20, April 18 or 19, March 25, January 2, November 17, and November 20 are all suggested.[9][50] Various factors contributed to the selection of December 25 as a date of celebration: it was the date of the winter solstice on the Roman calendar; it was about nine months after March 25, the date of the vernal equinox and a date linked to the conception of Jesus.

So when was Jesus Born?

There's a strong and practical reason why Jesus might not have been born in the winter, but in the spring or the autumn! It can get very cold in the winter and it's unlikely that the shepherds would have been keeping sheep out on the hills (as those hills can get quite a lot of snow sometimes!).

Does the word "mass" in Christmas means death as per Roman Catholics?

"Christmas" means by definition "death of Christ". The word Christmas comes from "Cristes Maesse", an early English phrase that means "Mass of Christ."

In essence, the Mass is the ceremonial slaying of Jesus Christ over and over again, followed by the eating of his flesh and the drinking of his blood. The Mass is the death sacrifice, and the "Host" is the victim.

No. It means "being dismissed", the Latin for which is "Missa," from the final phrase used by the presider: "Ite, missa est." The 2010 Missal in English translates it as, "Go forth, the Mass is ended." A more literal translation would be "Go, you are dismissed."

The Mass is the remembrance and making present again in a sacramental way the once-for-all sacrifice that Jesus gave us through the Last Supper, anticipating his suffering death and resurrection that would quickly follow. It is not killing Christ again, any more than looking at a photo of a relative taken when they were dying of cancer is killing them again. Rather, we proclaim it is how Christ chose to give himself to us so that we may receive him and the grace of his death and resurrection.

If you like, rather than meaning "death," it is a "sending" us back to life, renewed in hope and nourished in grace. It is not about death, but about life.
