We don’t want the North to share its capabilities with its friends — Syria, for instance, or Iran. We don’t want to tempt South Korea or Japan to develop indigenous nuclear arsenals. We don’t want to allow North Korea to use a cycle of nuclear threats and negotiations to edge the United States out of East Asia.
The right answer is that we want the Kim regime out of North Korea. It isn’t the nukes that ought mainly to worry us. It’s the hands that hold them.
Beijing should recognize that its interests are best served with Kim gone and North Korea intact, stable and under control.
There’s a bargain to be struck. Missing is sufficient pressure on Beijing for them to understand it’s in their best interest, too.

Time to shoot down a North Korean missile, former top US general says

北朝鮮に対して、爆撃機を韓国上空に飛ばしたり、海に向かって砲撃訓練しておらんで、直接、北朝鮮が実験につかうミサイルを撃ち落としたれ、と、米軍の元空軍元帥

It's clear North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is neither impressed nor deterred by recent displays of U.S. military might, so it's time to up the ante, says a retired American four-star commander.
Rather than flying American bombers over the south, or firing missiles into the sea, the U.S. should target the next intercontinental ballistic missile North Korea launches, said retired Air Force Gen. Chuck Wald.
"I would try to shoot one of their test missiles down instead of just firing missiles off the South Korean coast out there," Wald said in an interview with the

The North has warned that it would immediately retaliate by launching nuclear missiles. But predicting how Mr. Kim would actually respond to a limited attack is an exercise in strategic game theory, with many analysts arguing that he would refrain from immediately going nuclear or using his stockpile of chemical and biological weapons to avoid provoking a nuclear response from the United States.
The North has often threatened to turn Seoul into a “sea of fire,” but the vast majority of its artillery has a range of three to six miles and cannot reach the city, analysts say.
In 2010, North Korean forces fired about 170 shells at an island in the South, killing two civilians and two soldiers. Analysts later concluded that about 25 percent of the North’s shells failed to detonate.
A study published by the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability in 2012 accounting for these and other factors such as population density concluded that an initial artillery barrage by the North focused on military targets would result in nearly 3,000 fatalities, while one targeting civilians would kill nearly 30,000 people.
The North could compound the damage by also firing ballistic missiles at Seoul. But Joseph S. Bermudez Jr., a North Korea expert at AllSource Analysis, a defense intelligence consultancy, said it was more likely to use missiles to target military installations, including American bases in Japan.
All things considered, analysts say, it could take American and South Korean forces three to four days to overwhelm North Korea’s artillery.
How much damage North Korea inflicts in that time depends in part on South Korea’s ability to get people to safety quickly. As more of the North’s guns are destroyed and people take cover, the casualty rate would fall with each hour.
The Nautilus Institute study projects 60,000 fatalities in the first full day of a surprise artillery attack on military targets around Seoul, the majority in the first three hours. Casualty estimates for an attack on the civilian population are much higher, with some studies projecting more than 300,000 dead in the opening days.

They added it would be a propaganda boost for the brutal regime, just like when Hitler was allowed to parade swastikas and goose-stepping storm troopers at the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
New South Korean president Moon Jae-in is keen to engage with the pariah regime in the North and believes sport could be a way to build bridges.
Sport minister Do Jong-hwan suggested at the weekend the two nations could field a joint woman’s ice hockey team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
He also said some of the skiing events could be moved to North Korea’s Masikryong ski resort.
Ken Kato, director of Human Rights in Asia and a member of the International Coalition to Stop Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea, protested in a letter to IOC president Thomas Bach.
He said permitting North Korea to host Olympic events “will send the wrong message to the North Korean regime and encourage human rights violations and nuclear proliferation activities, just like the Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics gave credibility to the Nazis.”
He added: “Ski equipment used at the Masikryong ski resort was mostly obtained through UN sanctions violations and the IOC should not use the proceeds of crime.”
