Islands apart
There is more than meets the eye to the countries’ tense stand-off

The Economist here is suggesting that the Senkaku dispute is really motivated by marine resources and EEZ's, which it is at some level. But It talks about Okinotorishima for some reason I can't fathom in the context of disputes (the Senkaku islands are not at risk of sinking last I heard, although I wish they would), and even coming back to the islands at hand and potential natural gas reserves and such, even if they found a Saudi type Oil Field under these islands, it would still not compare to the economic value of existing trade between China and Japan. The dispute is motivated almost entirely by modern Chinese historical revisionism and nationalism that considers demonization of Japan a pillar of the legitimacy of communist party rule of China. 40 years ago when Japan and PRC established relations, Deng Xiaoping said openly the boundary dispute should never affect relations. It only is now because the PRC has educated its population for the last 40 years that Japan's occupation of those islands is based on an evil wrong perpetuated against China by Japan in the 19th century that they are now unable to back down from or contradict. The essence of this problem is not fish or gas. It is Chinese national pride, and that is why it cannot be resolved, given that Japan's sovereignty over those islands is legal and valid under international law

Libya attack: Who's behind the inflammatory YouTube video?
An Egypt mob and a Libya attack are thought to have been sparked by a virulent anti-Islam YouTube video. But who was behind that amateurish video remains a mystery.

By Gloria Goodale, Staff writer / September 12, 2012

“This has all the earmarks of being heavily orchestrated,” says Nasser Weddady, civil rights outreach director for the American Islamic Congress.

“There are extremist groups, funded by among others, the Saudis, who deliberately set out to inflame these kinds of extremist sentiments,” he says. He points to the fact that the trailer sat unnoticed on YouTube for nearly two months, until the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Hollywood of hate
The film that set off deadly riots has plenty of peers. Welcome to the Islamophobic entertainment industry
BY MATT DUSS

The film – which, Bacile claimed, cost $5 million and was financed by more than 100 Jewish donors, though neither has been verified – shares ideas with a growing transnational movement that preaches hatred of the Islamic faith and seeks to exacerbate tensions between Islam and the West.

Bacile himself acknowledged this goal in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, saying that it was intended to showcase his view of Islam as a hateful religion. “Islam is a cancer,” Bacile said. “The movie is a political movie. It’s not a religious movie.”

(CBS News) President Obama on Wednesday morning said that the United States will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the attackers who killed four Americans in Libya overnight, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens.

"We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice will be done," Mr. Obama said from the White House rose garden. "Make no mistake, justice will be done."

Stevens and three other Americans were killed in an attack by Muslim protesters on the U.S. consulate compound in Benghazi, the U.S. government confirmed Wednesday.

Mr. Obama said he has ordered heightened security at all U.S. diplomatic offices around the world in the wake of the attack, as well as protests in Cairo on Tuesday. Both incidents were sparked by hardline Muslims protesting a film made in the U.S. that insults the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

The United States, the president said, is "a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." However, he added, "There is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts."
Mr. Obama said that many Libyans have already joined the U.S. in condemning the violence and noted that Libyan security personnel fought back against the attackers alongside Americans. Libyans also helped some American diplomats find safety and carried Stevens' body to the hospital where he died.

"This attack will not break the bonds between the United States and Libya," Mr. Obama said.

In separate remarks at the State Department, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reiterated the administration's assertion that its relations with Libya will remain stable.

"The friendship between our countries, born out of shared struggle, will not be another casualty of this attack," she said. "A free and stable Libya is still in America's interests and security, and we will not turn our backs on that."

Obama on Libya attack: "Justice will be done"

President Obama has vowed to 'bring justice' to those who killed the US ambassador and three other embassy personnel in Libya. Military forces are being positioned.http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Military/2012/0913/How-would-the-US-pursue-justice-in-Libya

Turmoil Over Contentious Video Spreads
