After the liberation of the French capital many were simply stripped of their uniforms and sent home. To make matters even worse, in 1959 their pensions were frozen.

I think that this situation with the school district reflects a complete lack of understanding about the Asian American experience. Phanachone was born in the United States. But like many other Asian Americans, she probably grew up learning two languages simultaneously. Or like many of my relatives, she may have been thrust into an English-speaking environment at five years old.
In any event, it’s a little too late to test her English proficiency at the age of seventeen. But the reality is that in college, during graduate school and with employers, she may have to say “YES I SPEAK ENGLISH” yet again.

Students not fluent in English have floundered in Boston schools since voters approved a law change six years ago requiring school districts to teach them all subjects in English rather than their native tongue, according to a report being released tomorrow.
The estimates of the number of homeless people in America vary widely. That may be because some surveys consider people who have no home for a night to fall into the category, while others only consider those who live in a chronic state of being without their own shelter. The disparities of measurement yield numbers that are as low at 800,000 and as high as three million.
The report found that, nationally, 1.5 million children - one in 50 - become homeless in the course of a year.
The denial was automatic because immigration authorities’ interpret a legal provision known as the “widow penalty” as requiring that immigrants be deported if their American spouses die before their green card applications are approved, and before they are married two years.
