Ethnic nationalism is actually the direct influence of both the Imperial West leading up to WWII, as well as opposition of pan-Asia and Japanese imperialism that overtook Asia, which of course includes Korea.
Actually, ethnic nationalism is pretty much all over the place, it caused the above, it wasn’t caused by it.

Kakui Kujira:
I must disagree with you based on the materials I’ve read on the topic. Nationalism based on ethnicity was not a popular idea in Korea until the late 19th century. Up till that point, there was large support in Korea for Japanese strength to lead Asian countries in the pan-Asian charge against the imperial West. This was largely based on Darwinist concepts of the “mighty over the weak”, and was essentially a racist ideology pitting the “white races against the yellow races.”
It wasn’t until that point that Korean scholars began to solidify a national identity that ignored the broader “Asian race” and focused on Koreans as particularly special. They had to do extensive research on their own myths and history, and used their findings to support the spread of their ethnic-national identity to stem off what they perceived at the time to be a dangerous imperial force coming not from the West, but from Japan. It was this dichotomy of beliefs that lead to two possible paths for Koreans. If the pan-Asianists ultimately grew in legitimacy, they would have welcomed Japan with open arms as brethren in the fight against the horde of “white races” (particularly Russians). As it turned out, the nationalists gained more support, but there wasn’t anything they could do to resist the inevitable Japanese occupation.
It was that period and those events that nurtured the strong blood-ties Koreans hold dearly to this day, and why no matter how violent the differences are between North and South Korea, they still cling tightly to the concept of a race of “one people”.
– Cut! Restrict your theories on nationalism etc. to the Occidentalism echo chamber where they belong, Alex. Either relate things back to this blog entry regarding the Korean law at hand, or go back to your cyberstalking and trolling on other mailing lists.

– Then I’ve confused you with another “Alex” who posts/trolls at Occidentalism, Big Daikon, and elsewhere, saying all manner of offensive rubbish about me and others connected to me. I apologize. It’s hard enough dealing with the anonymous gnats that infest cyberspace, and I’m bound to get it wrong sooner or later. Sorry.
