“If”

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!


もし、周りの皆が取り乱し貴方を責める中、貴方が冷静を保つことができれば、
もし、周りの皆が貴方を疑う中、貴方が皆の疑いを理解し、かつ自分を信じることができれば、
もし、貴方が待ち、待ち疲れず、嘘をつかれず、嘘に加担せず、憎まれず、憎しみに屈せず、それでいて気取らず、偉そうに構えなければ、

もし、貴方が夢を持ち、夢に溺れず、
もし、貴方が考え、考えるだけに終わらず
もし、貴方が栄光と挫折の両者を同じように受け入れ
もし、貴方が話す真実が切り裂かれ愚者に見られる中、それを受け入れ、貴方が信じたものが壊されるのを見守り、また築き上げることができれば、

もし、貴方が築いた全ての栄光をひとつのことに賭け、敗北しても、また最初から築き始め、貴方の敗北を悔やむようなことを一言も漏らさず、
もし、貴方が貴方の役割が過ぎた後も貴方のハート、神経、筋肉を強い、粘り続け、身体を使い果たし後に意思のみが残り、その意思が「踏ん張れ！」と言うことができれば、

もし、貴方が群集と話し、高潔を保ち、王と歩き、自分らしさを失わず、
もし、敵も愛する人も貴方を傷つけることができず、
もし、皆が貴方を頼ることができ、でも頼りすぎず
もし、貴方が勘弁できない1分間を、走ることで忘れることができれば
貴方は大地のごとくあり、男である。息子よ！
