兼好法師『徒然草』第45段「公世（ｷﾝﾖ）の二位の･･････」：「榎木（ｴﾉｷﾉ）僧正」「切杭（ｷﾘｸﾋ）の僧正」「堀池（ﾎﾘｹﾉ）僧正」！

とても性格が悪い僧正がいた。　There was a high priest who was extremely bad-tempered.
彼の寺の近くに大きな榎（ｴ）の木があった。　Near to his temple, there was a large nettle-tree.
人々が彼を「榎木（ｴﾉｷﾉ）僧正」と呼んだ。　People called him "the nettle-tree high priest".
彼は怒り、その木を切り倒した。　He got angry and cut down the tree.
切り株が残った。　A stump was left.
人々が彼を「切杭（ｷﾘｸﾋ）の僧正」と呼んだ。　People called him "the stump high priest".
彼がまた怒った。　He got angry again.
彼は切り株を掘り捨てさせ。　He had the stump dug and thrown away.
堀池が残った。　A pond was left.
人々が彼を「堀池（ﾎﾘｹﾉ）僧正」と呼んだ。　People called him "the pond high priest".

《感想1》このあと、悪い性格の僧正はどうなるか？堀池を埋めれば「埋立（ｳﾒﾀﾃﾉ）僧正」と呼ばれるだろう。
《感想2》彼が良い性格になれば、悪循環から抜け出せる。解脱が必要だ。彼は坊さんとして真摯に修行するしかない。
