今日は晴れると思ってバイクで出勤したんだが、すぐに雨に降られて引き返してヴァリアント君で出勤する羽目になりました。いつまでたってもすっきりしないですねー。
西日本日本海側の日照時間 ９月は過去最少に
気象庁によると先月は前線が本州付近に停滞しやすかったうえ、９月５日の未明に長崎市付近に上陸した台風１２号や、２０日に鹿児島県と和歌山県に上陸した台風１６号などの影響も重なって、ほぼ全国的に曇りや雨の日が多くなり、日照時間がかなり少なくなった。このうち、西日本の日本海側では、先月１か月間の日照時間が平年の６４％と、気象庁が統計を取り始めてから最も少なくなっちまいました。地点別では、松江市が８３．８時間で平年の５９％、山口市が８５．７時間で平年の５４％とそれぞれ統計を取り始めてから最も少なくなったほか、いずれも平年と比べて長崎県佐世保市で６５％、鳥取市と京都府舞鶴市で６３％、それに大分市でおよそ６０％にとどまったそうです。
ほんで今日、日が射してんのは東工大。脚光浴びてるのは大隅先生。まあ、時間の問題だったけど、とうとう着ましたかっって感じ。

僕がＯ大の院生時代、東大に大隅・安楽という酵母細胞の顕微鏡写真の大御所がおられましてな。僕の中で大隅先生はCell Biologistでして、Genticsを駆使しだしたのはオートファジー研究が軌道に乗ってきてから基生研以降（私の個人的感覚です）。そもそも東大では教養部で助教授という・・・僕からみたら全くありえない待遇。オートファジー研究が大発展したのは彼が東大をぬけて自分の研究室を持ってからだと思う（私の個人的感覚ですってば）。それがなかったら・・・・。NHKの記事からの引用ですが、大隅先生が東京大学で立ち上げた研究室に最初に大学院生として入った１人、現Ｏ大教授の野田先生が「大隅先生が最初に１人で研究室を立ち上げられたときは本当に地味な研究室で、誰にも見向きもされないなかで細々とやっていた。そのぶん、和気あいあいとやっていたが、このような日が来るとは１００％想像できなかった。当時は本当に小さな部屋で、実験で使うビンを買うお金もないぐらいでウイスキーのビンを使ったこともあった」と述べています。まあ、昔は酒瓶を試薬のボトルにしたり、ワンカップ酒の空き容器をビーカーの代わりにしているなんて普通でした。僕のいたとこもそうだったし、今おいらが細々と実験している環境もそんなもんだよ。こんな話が美談になるような国じゃダメなんだよ。
オートファジーがどういうものかの説明記事は、あちこちで読めるからもういいですね・・・。前は「自食作用」という言葉も添えて説明してましたが、もういらないんじゃないかなー。BBCの記事がなかなか良く説明してくれています。

This year's Nobel Laureate discovered and elucidated mechanisms underlying autophagy, a fundamental process for degrading and recycling cellular components.
The word autophagy originates from the Greek words auto-, meaning "self", and phagein, meaning "to eat". Thus,autophagy denotes "self eating". This concept emerged during the 1960's, when researchers first observed that the cell could destroy its own contents by enclosing it in membranes, forming sack-like vesicles that were transported to a recycling compartment, called the lysosome, for degradation. Difficulties in studying the phenomenon meant that little was known until, in a series of brilliant experiments in the early 1990's, Yoshinori Ohsumi used baker's yeast to identify genes essential for autophagy. He then went on to elucidate the underlying mechanisms for autophagy in yeast and showed that similar sophisticated machinery is used in our cells.
Ohsumi's discoveries led to a new paradigm in our understanding of how the cell recycles its content. His discoveries opened the path to understanding the fundamental importance of autophagy in many physiological processes, such as in the adaptation to starvation or response to infection. Mutations in autophagy genes can cause disease, and the autophagic process is involved in several conditions including cancer and neurological disease.
