「一期一会」

Japanese : Ichigo ichie

English : Treasure every meeting, for it will never recur.

 

一生に一度の出会い。一期とは一生のこと。たとえ、これまで何度出会ってきたとしても、

あるいはこのさき何度出会うとしても、今この瞬間の出会いはもう帰ってきません。

今この瞬間は一度きり。だからこそ、一瞬一瞬をおろそかにせず、大切にして人と交わりたいものです。

今こうして出会えたことへの感激と感謝をもって人と接していきたいものです。

 English

I have merely once encounter with you in my life. Ichigo means our lifetime.

For example getting many encounter till now, or again in the case of meeting many times from now on, the relation in a moment will never recur.

The time in a moment is only once experience. That is why have to be treasure every single moment and want to be good relations with others.  

Have to have good relations and to meet others with deeply impressed and appreciation from now on.

About Zen

 (4)  About Zen, conveyed to Japan

Rinzai Zen-master was the tenth successor from Bodhi Dharma. While that period in China, Buddhism was persecuted by the politics. It had been confused in political affairs. Therefore the way of his teaching had the tense atmosphere every single time. 

Rinzai’s temple had stood beside Codaga River. He taught like that. ‘The fish jumps up and downs with all might so you have to be brisk like that every time.’ He respected disciple’s active done above everything else. 

Like that Zen conveyed to Japan from China by Eisai Zen master when eight hundred years ago. They conveyed Chinese cultures simultaneously. That was the tea culture or the calligraphy method and Chinese poetry etc.

Eisai brought the seeds of tea and spread the tea culture. At that time in Zen temple they had offered a tea as medicine for the pilgrims. It became to grow the tea ceremony. Ancient Chinese culture have built the foundations of Japanese culture by making relation with our climate.

Bodhi Dharma

（3）What is the teaching by Bodhi Dharma?

Bodhi Dharma was born as the third prince of an Indian country. He had studied Zen under Prajñãtãra and got enlightenment. He went across the sea way to China Liáng and conveyed Zen.

He taught Zen what to be affectionate behavior to others and to be all might in every situation with voluntarily.  Zazen is not only Zen but also in all jobs. While nine years Zazen, he conveyed it to his disciple whose name was Eka.

Bodhi Dharma’s Zen is by practicing actually and is not an armchair theory learning. At that period, the central idea in China Buddhism was in much arguments. So they did not received Zen. Therefore he was persecuted by others.

They say that he returned to India remaining his one side shoe in his tomb or went back to India riding on the reed leaf passing the sea way. It tend to say the legendary story for a historical great men.

Theravada and Mahayana

 

（2）What are the difference and the common issue both of Theravada and Mahayana?

Sri Lankan Buddhism has the tradition of the primitive Buddhism as it is. That matter is the precious cultural heritage and might be say it cannot find another country. In spite of experienced huge pressure by the colonial policy for long, it has kept the tradition because of the island country. It is just about the same situation as keeping Zen tradition in Japan. 

Mahayana has moderate precept. Especially Japanese priests have a family and have nothing restricted about meals or etc. If it be severe to do like Sri Lankan Buddhism we have nothing to be a monk in Japan. On the contrary, it might be to say that it is good for the asking follower’s worries of life as well. It is important part for woman situation in which Japanese temple.

Japanese Zen values the Sanga organization above everything else. There is an abbot in the center situation and are several priests who assist him or monks. This tradition is much the same as primitive Buddhism, so Sri Lankan Buddhism is likely it. Japanese abbots keep the religious precepts. And it is much same as Sri Lankan abbots.

Japanese monks carry on the work with great energy. We say it Samu.

Those are what doing mendicancy or cleaning garden and field working etc. Samu is the traditional practicing from that time on Chinese Zen period.
