'Jyhi -mercy'

Jyhi, mercy means deep affection. Avalokitesvara -Kwannon represents deep affection of Buddha. Most of Kwannon statues look like mother’s form in Japan. That is the reason why mother’s affection for their children is pure and close to Buddha’s mercy. And further, offering this pure affection to the world is called Jyhi.

Originally, Jyhi was the word of which Maitry and Karuna in the Buddhism teaching were combined. In ancient India, Maitry meant deep friendship and Karuna meant a groan in Hindi. Buddha’s mercy is the affection that we stand on other person's situation and communicate to them wholeheartedly.

Can we understand other person's agonies and sufferings? Can we recognize the wounded groaning? We will be able to grasp them if we have the same experience of others. We call the affection that understands other person's sufferings, "Karna".
Let’s think about the matters on the same situation of other person especially in some volunteer works, welfare, some relief works, some bullying problems and so on.

’The pumpkin seed’ーーWhat is necessary for human beings to grow well?ーー
I put some compost at a corner of the temple ground. I piled up many wood chips and branches around there after pruning the trees. One day the pumpkin sprouted from around the wood chips. I supposed to drop the pumpkin seed to there, which should have put into compost. But, fortunately, the growth environment of the seed was perfect. They were much fertilizer and fallen leaves there and also sunshine in the morning. Plants grow well with a lot of sunshine in the morning and a little in the afternoon.
Even more, the wood chips were a good partner which the pumpkin vine was entangled and also be well drained. The vine extended within a moment and finally a big fruit was born. I picked seven pumpkins which size was as big as a football.
Pumpkin seeds are various, but the contents have not much difference. In fact, the growth environment is the important element to make a good result. The seeds of the pumpkin sold at the supermarket hardly sprout and even put seven fruits.
Buddha taught Karma; to keep being naturally. All things in the world were born by Karma (the dependence on origin), and live by Karma (the causes and conditions), and then passed away by Karma (destiny).
There is nothing to exist fixedly. If we call the Karma of parents or grandparents as the warp, we can call the Karma of family, neighbors, colleagues as the weft. The warp and weft are weaved and become to the Karma surrounding us. It is invisible and unlimited chance and relationship. We are not able to alive here without anyone. Buddhism is the religion that focuses on this relationship.

For bearing pumpkin fruits, sunshine and good fertilizer are absolutely necessary. What is necessary for human beings to grow well? It should not be enough to satisfy the belly. So, what should we do? It is very simple that we just appreciate all things as fitting our hands. If we appreciate all relationships and decide to sow a good seed for a good relationship, we'll wake up comfortably next day.

Karma:
Karma is the teaching by Buddha and means "I am here thanks to you. If you were not here, I was not here".
For example, what I can be a student is thanks to the teachers. And of course, what I was born is thanks to my parents. Companies can exist thanks to their employees. In this way, everything exists by the support each other like the yarns of textile.
Again, I could not exist if you're not here. I can exist thanks to you. So, we can learn a gratitude and humble behavior by learning Karma.
This is the reason why Zen is called "the emty mind".

「縁」
縁は「貴方があって私がある。貴方がなければ私はない」という意味で仏陀の生きておられたころからの教えです。先生がいて生徒の存在がある。両親がいてくれて私が生まれた。従業員がいて会社がある。このような関係で世の中はお互いに織物のように関係しあって存在しています。もし相手がなければこの自分はない。そもそもこの私の存在はないはずなのだが貴方がいてくれるから私は今ここに存在し得る。その思いから感謝が生まれるし謙虚な姿勢が出てくる。「縁」の教義は仏陀の最も基本的な教えです。禅は体験型の教育といわれる由縁です。

'Dogs' English lecture

'Dogs'
It is well known that dogs are color-blind, and recognize only black and white. Their sense of smell is a thousand times stronger than a human’s. Dogs have a map in their brain for their sense of smell and act in accordance with it. Therefore dogs don’t react to things that don’t smell and don’t recognize anything outside of this map. Dogs can only judge their own territory.

Well, how about us human beings? The function of our sense of smell aside, let's think about our point of view. Can we see things around us clearly? Don't we see things from only one side or in a narrow view? We should think hard about this. In everyday life, we might be judging things through a narrow mindset.

Wisely, dogs can detect people who love them. They have been used for caring for elderly people who are suffering from dementia. We call them ‘therapy dogs’. Dogs have always maintained a good relationship with people, as we can see from the relationship between a guide dog and its owner. They will be required to help us in our lives much more in the future.

「犬」
　犬は白黒の色盲で、その鼻は人間の何万倍もきくのだということはよく知られています。犬の頭の中には臭いの地図があってそれに基づいて行動しています。だから臭いのしないものには反応しません。またその臭いの地図の範疇を超えた広い世界は判断できません。判断できるのはそのテリトリーの範囲内だけです。
　さて人間はどうでしょうか。鼻の機能はさておき、ものの見方という点で私たちは「正しい見方をしている」といえるでしょうか。偏見をもって見ていないでしょうか。私たちはよく考えなければなりません。知らないうちに偏った判断をしてはいないでしょうか。私たちは狭い世界しか知らないで何でも判断をしているに違いありません。
　犬は自分を可愛がってくれる人をよく知っています。犬好きな人にすぐになつきます。高齢者の痴呆症介護に犬も役立っていてセラピー犬と呼ばれています。盲導犬につづく人間と犬との協力関係です。今後、セラピー犬はもっとその役割が増えていくでしょう。

'Sparrows' Ｅnglish lecture

One afternoon, a baby sparrow fell from its nest.
The baby sparrow could not fly yet, so it just stayed there, trying to move its wings. The mother sparrow came to feed the baby. However, the baby eventually stopped moving on the cold ground. In the end, the mother gave up. This was the cruel reality of the sparrow’s world, much like ours.

On another occasion, a sparrow on the roof let its fellow sparrows know something dangerous might be happening, he cried “Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep”. A snake or a cat may have been preying on the birds. A couple of young sparrows, trembling in fear, flew away as soon as they heard the news.

Sparrows seem to be able to learn from experience in order to avoid danger. A sparrow's lifespan is said to be less than two years. According to records, sparrows that lived there lived for more than 2 years. For sparrows, winter is the most difficult season to survive as there is very little food.

「スズメ」
　ある日の昼下がりのことです。お寺の中庭に軒下のスズメの巣から雛が落ちました。雛はまだ飛べずにばたばたと羽音をたてていました。何度も親鳥が餌を運んできます。雛はそのうちに体が冷えたのか動けなくなりました。親鳥はついにあきらめて餌を運んでこなくなりました。スズメの世界も厳しいのです。
　また別の日のことです。高い屋根の上からスズメが警戒音を発して「チッチチチ。チッチチチチ」と仲間に危険を知らせています。庭先を見ると物干し台の下で二羽の小スズメが寄り添うようにふるえながら隠れています。きっと天敵のヘビ、あるいは猫がいるのでしょう。その子スズメたちはそのあとすぐに飛んで逃げていきました。
　スズメには学習能力があって、うまく学習できるスズメは苦難を乗り切ることができるのだそうです。スズメの平均寿命は二年足らずで、学習できないスズメは冬を越せません。ある研究者の記録では２０年生きたスズメがいたというのですから驚きます。スズメに限らずほかの鳥たちにとっても冬の餌の少ないころが試練です。

What is Zen sutra?
We have Buddhist sutras with more than 8000 rolls. Zen sutra even adds the Zen classic texts and further adds Mother Nature. Birds' singing and wind sound are included to the sutra, so we can say Mother Nature is the sutra itself. Only Zen has such like a lecture.
I sometimes have a question from the audience after a lecture.
“I think the Bible can be understood easily because it was translated into modern languages. But I cannot understand the Buddhist sutra because it's too huge and difficult. Will you please teach me about Buddhism more easily?”
I said, "Zen texts are difficult actually. I'd like to tell you that birds' singing and wind sound are the preaching by Buddha in the Zen world. If you know it, you'll be able to understand the Zen sutra easier."

In the middle of June, fireflies grow around the Philosophical pass or at Kamo Shrine in Kyoto. It is only Kyoto where we can see fireflies in such a large city. But it getting fewer than before.

If I would say "birds' singing and wind sound are the Buddhist lecture", it would seem to a perversion, but we could feel so when we sit quietly and keep calm. Zen teaching is to respect someone's own feelings.

「経典とは何か」
仏教の経典は『一切経』8,000巻以上あります。禅という場合はそれに禅の古典を加え、さらに大自然も含まれます。鳥の声や虫の音、風の音もみな経典を読む声でこの大地は経典であると説きます。そのような教義は禅の他にはありません。講演会の後、次のような質問をいただくことがあります。
「キリスト教の経典は『バイブル』1冊で、本当の理解ができるかどうかは別として現代文に翻訳されているので読んで理解できます。仏教の経典は膨大な量で、しかも難しくて理解できない。もっとやさしい経典はないのですか」と。
禅の経典は難しいといえば難しいが、鳥の声や虫の音も仏陀の説法だと言えばこんなにやさしい経典は他にないのではないでしょうか。6月中ごろ、京都の哲学の道や賀茂神社周辺にはホタルがでます。日本中の大都会でホタルを見ることができるのは京都だけです。でも近年その数は少なくなりました。鳥の声や虫の音を仏陀の説法といえば理屈の様ですが、心静かに坐ればそのように感じることができるはずです。そのように自分で感じるというところをたいせつにするのが禅の教えです。

What is Buddha's wisdom?

Buddha’s mercy is kind, but sometimes very strict. The statue of Buddha in Kofuku-ji Temple of Nara city, is the statue of which I feel its face is the most strict among the statues.
When the golden hall, located in the west part of the temple ground, was burnt by a big fire in the Edo Period, only the head of this statue remained. This matter might let this Buddha’s face look so mysterious.
Recently, according to the study of ancient documents, this statue of Buddha was found to be made by Unkei, a famous Busshi in the Kamakura Period.
The other day, I visited Kofuku-ji to pray for this statue. This statue's face was very beautiful, so I shuddered with awe.
All things not only in the temple ground but also around of it such as the main hall, other buildings, the garden, trees, mountains, birds' singing, the natural scenery, of course the statues express the Buddha’s wisdom. Buddha’s pure land has spread to all directions.

「仏さまの智慧」
仏さまの慈悲はやさしいばかりでなく、ときには厳しいこともあります。そのような表情を感じる仏像は奈良、興福寺にある運慶作の釈迦如来像です。江戸時代に西の金堂が焼け落ちて、お釈迦さまの頭部だけが残りました。この仏像の表情は神秘的で、頭だけが焼け残ったという由縁を含めて不思議な存在です。最近になって古文書の研究から運慶の作だと分かったのだそうです。
先日、興福寺にお参りして拝ませていただきました。この仏像は背筋がぞっとするような美しい表情です。仏像の姿だけではなく、お堂のなかの荘厳や境内の建物、庭園、木立、境内の外、借景の山々、鳥の声などあわせて智慧を表現しています。仏教寺院で神聖な場所は塀の中だけではなく、塀の外の世界を含めて清浄世界です。仏さまの清浄な世界はずっと大きく広がっています。
