『徒然草』第243段(現代語訳・英訳)

私が八歳になった年に、父にこのように尋ねた。

「仏とはどのようなものですか」と。

父は「仏は人がなるのだ」といった。

また尋ねた。「人はどのようにして仏になるのでしょうか」と。

父はまた「仏の教えによってなるのだ」と答えた。

また尋ねた「(その)教えた仏を、誰が教えたのですか」と。

(父は)また答えた。それもまた先の仏の教えによって(仏に)なったのだ」と。

また尋ねた。「その教えをはじめた第一の仏は、どのような仏でしたか」と言った

そのとき父は、「空よりふったのだ、土よりわいたのだ」と言って笑った。

「(私は)問い詰められて、まったく答えられなくなった」と人々に語って面白がっていた。

 

“Essays in Idleness” the 243th paragraph by Kenko Yoshida

When I was eight years old, I asked father like this.

‘What is a Buddha?’

Father answered me.

‘A human turn into a Buddha.’

I asked again.

‘How does turn a human into a Buddha?’

Father responded again.

‘A human turn into a Buddha by Buddha‘s teaching.’

I asked again.

‘Who did teach Buddha?’

Father responded again.

‘Also he turned into Buddha by the previous Buddha.’

I asked again.

‘What sort of the first Buddha who began to teach him?’

At that time, father responded with laughing.

‘It fell from the sky and was gushing from the earth.’ 

Thereafter, my father told to neighbors with joy.

‘I could not answered at all, driven into a corner by my son questioning.’

What is the teaching by Bodhidharma?

Bodhidharma was born as the third prince of an Indian country. He had studied Zen under Prajñãtãra and got enlightenment. He went across the sea way to China Liáng and conveyed Zen.

He taught Zen what to be affectionate behavior to others and to be all might in every situation with voluntarily.  Zazen is not only Zen but also all jobs. While nine years Zazen, he conveyed it to his disciple whose name was Eka.

Bodhidharma’s Zen is by practicing actually and is not an armchair theory learning. At that period, the central idea in China Buddhism was in much arguments. So they did not received Zen. Therefore he was persecuted by others.

They say that he returned to India remaining his one side shoe in his tomb or went back to India riding on the reed leaf passing the sea way. It tend to say the legendary story for a historical great man.

The reason why the birth of Mahayana Buddhism

(1)The social matter in India
Mahayana Buddhism originated in the center of India when the 1st century and was conveyed to Tibet, China, Korean peninsula and Japan.
It was established by Nãgãrjuna (B. C. 250? or B.C.150?) who was bone in south India and the greatest scholar. He learned all of the Indian philosophical methods and all sect of Buddhism. ‘Vibhãsã precepts method’ is explanatory book which learned in Theravada Buddhism.
When five hundred years later from Buddha past away to nirvana, Buddhism was decreased to pressed by Hinduism. Therefore Buddhist sects had collected sutras adopting Hinduism gods for example Avalokitesurara and etc. At the editorial meeting, they had done in cooperation with ordinary followers and adopted Indian folk stories. So that Mahayana Buddhism was able to acquire huge followers.
And another reason is that there were huge women followers gathering at the period. As you know, it was restricted marriage or getting job by the caste system. Besides that, it had too low an opinion to women. At that period women could not choice their own religion. If I say without your critical opinion, they say that women cannot get enlightenment at that period.
There is ‘Invocation of Amida’ in Mahayana. One of the amida’s 48 vows is ‘A female can be relief’. It taught that everyone can be relief by invocation of amida. By that teaching Mahayana had done success conveyed any countries.

Buddha’s the first disciple.

“Ājñãta Kãņņdinya was the first Buddha’s disciple.”


‘Siddhãrtha was born’
Buddha’s real name was Gautama Siddhãrtha. 
In BC463, he was born in Shakya people’s land named Kapilavastu where was near the border between India and Nepal as a legitimate child between King Suddhodana and Queen Mãyã. Kapilavastu was a little more large area than Hukuoka prefecture and was extremely fertile land in addition to fresh greenery. King Suddhodana asked eight persons of fortune-teller to divine his child’s fortune. One of them was Kãņņdinya. At that time he was sixteen years old. 


King asked him.
‘Can he grow up?’
Kãņņdinya said.
‘Your baby will grow up well and be to attain enlightenment.’ 
At that time, Kapilavastu was well known to the land where called a birthplace of Kapila legendary wizard, and Brahmanism had been national religion. At that period, they had been believed that the man who attain enlightenment will come out into this world and will rescue people. Kãņņdinya’s words was based on up to religious expectation at that period.

Zen became the International relationship

It is becoming decrease Buddhist followers in Japan. Of course Buddhist monks also became decrease too. This matter is huge worry problem for Japanese Buddhist.

However, one of my German friend said that I hope to participate Zen Sessin in Bairinji Sodo;Zen monastery in Kurume City.

One of Sri Lankan friend monk said I wish to learn Japanese Zen. This is the histrical transformation. Because it is the reazon why they have another religion or another Buddhist sect. One of Bangladeshi monk said that I hope to learn Buddhist missionary working and giving lecture to followers. I have to take off my hat to their effort.

The taxi company running in Paris City named Zen. The reason means what running with calm. One of the restaurant in New York City named Zen. It probably means the same reason.

Zen is the teaching that have followed since primitive Buddhism. We have to have responsibility to convey it to others.

The Mouse’s Marriage

The father mouse got his daughter to prepare for marriage. He thought seriously that she should get marry to the number one man in the world.  

The father mouse said.

“The sun illuminates the world. Its ability is marvelous.”

When the sun rose, the mouse said to the sun.

“I came here with my daughter. She is so beautiful. Please get marry to her.”

The sun said to him.

“I have the virtue lighting up the world. However when meeting the cloud, my light gets dark. Your daughter should get marry to the cloud.”

The father mouse thought it was correct. When looking the dark cloud, he told the cloud about that.

The cloud said to the mouse.

“I have the virtue covering the sun light. But I cannot do anything if the wind blows hard. Your daughter should get marry to the wind.”

The mouse thought it was correct and talked the remarks toward the wind blowing down from the mountains.

The wind said to the mouse.

“I have the virtue blowing away the cloud and the plants, however, I cannot beat the embankment. Your daughter should get marry to the embankment.”

The mouse thought it was true, and said to the embankment about it.

The embankment answered.

“I have the virtue not being blown away by the wind, but I cannot stand up if the mouse digs a hole in me.

The father mouse said “a mouse is the number one in the world.” Then he got his daughter to marry a mouse.

「ネズミの結婚」

 ネズミが、娘に(嫁入りの)準備をさせて、「娘は、世界で一番の者と結婚させる」と真面目に思った。

「太陽こそは、世界を照らす。その能力はすばらしい。」
ネズミは、朝日が昇ると、朝日に言った。

「娘を連れてきた。美人である。娘と結婚してほしい。」
朝日は言った。

「私は、世間を照らす徳がある。でも雲に会えば、私の光はなくなる。娘は、雲と結婚しなさい。」
ネズミは「本当だ」と思って、黒い雲が見えたのでこのことを雲に言った。
雲はネズミに言った。

「私は、日の光を隠す徳があるが、常に風が吹けばどうすることもできない。娘は、風と結婚しなさい。」
ネズミは「その通りだ」と思って、山風の吹くのに向ってこの話をした。
風はネズミに言った。

「私は、雲を吹きとばし木草を吹きたおす徳があるが、堤防にはかなわない。娘は、堤防と結婚しなさい。」
ネズミは「その通りだ」と思って堤防にこの話をした。
堤防は言った。

「私は、風で動かない徳があるが、ネズミに堤防を掘られれば耐えられない。」
それでネズミは、「ネズミは一番すぐれている」と言って、ネズミと娘を結婚させた。        『沙石集』より

'Mercy'

‘Mercy’ is consistent Buddha’s teaching since the period of the primitive Buddhism. It referred to warmhearted friendship in the Buddha period. Why was it taken into Buddhism? Friends see things in a common way as standing on equally without the relation of the upper and the lower. When you feel joy I will feel joy too. When you are sorrowful I am so too. Your joy is my joy. Mercy is based on like these relations. Impartiality was the Buddha’s fundamental attitude. Mercy is the situation as impartiality. I show you the Mercy verses in Sutta-Nipata, the primitive Buddhism conveyed in Sri Lanka. 

 

“Those who know ultimate ideal and have attained the stage of peace should do as follows: Be talented, honest, right-minded, soft, and talk gently –never be arrogant.” Section The 143rd 

“Just like a mother protecting her baby while sacrificing her life, we should have infinite mercy for all living things.” Section The 149th 

“We should have infinite mercy for the world as well. To the upper, lower as well as sideways, we should do without any barrier, grudge and hostility.” Section The 150th

 

Awakening to mercy is the beginning stand point of Buddhism and the final goal as well. We can say that it is the theme of which human beings have to solve. I heard from my friend that Sri Lankan people chant the Mercy verses in Sutta-Nipata at the wedding ceremony. It is marvelous culture for young generations to learn Buddha’s teaching at the beginning of new life. Please keep in mind such Sri Lankan customs.

Buddha was not a God. Buddha was a historical person. However, Buddha is our inside theme simultaneously. We have Buddha’s hart. And Buddha’s teaching is not only the religion but also is in all sphere, our jobs, daily life. Also it is useful for us. I introduce Buddha’s personality.

 

⋆ He was tall and a dignified physique seemed to be a pleasant person. He fascinated all people by his long arms, the way of imposing walking, big eyes like a cow, the shining beauty and his large chest.

He who met Buddha came to standstill. He who was at a standstill walked with him involuntarily. He who walked slowly started running. He who took a seat stood up.

His voice was fascination and had deep sound like a drum and had ability of mighty persuasion.

Zen lecture : The Indus civilization

 

 
Nowadays, it is well known that Mohenjo-Daro in the Southern Pakistan and Harappa in the Northeast Pakistan was two of the great four advanced civilizations in the world. The founder of historic sites were Dravidian. They were the ancestor of people living in Sri Lanka and India. These historic civilizations were annihilated by a drought.
 
The prime feature of this civilization is that the war-related facilities, temples, even a palace haven’t found in the remain. This civilizations is regarded to have been established around in 1500 B.C before the Aryan migration. There was no war at the period. The reason there was no temple there is supposed to have worshiped the mountain or wind as gods. Therefore they are supposed to have believed the polytheism.We can understand the reason there is no palace is that the republican government supposed to have reigned the country at that time.
 
The city-states had an advanced civilization as follows; burnt ceramic tile, constructed a wall and a road by tiles as well as an irrigation canal from far place, even had a flush toilet. They had the civilization like that. After that the Aryan migrated here. As the years passed, it is said that the Aryan were maybe affected by this civilization.
 
The Buddha’s birth-country was one of the Aryan sixteen countries in the northern India. He was born in rich natural environment and grew up in polytheism. Then he studied in the republican government and became a person who looked for peace. After that he become a monk asking the way of humanity, then finally got enlightenment. Buddha didn’t get enlightenment suddenly. As I said previously Indian culture guided him to the enlightenment. Buddha said there were seven Buddhas before me.
 
After that period, Buddhism could not remain as an independent religion in India. However we could say that the reason that Dharma lighting has kept long for 2500 years in Sri Lanka is through the effort of the descendant who brought the Indus civilization. The Sri Lankan tradition as loving nature and impartiality, giving mercy for each people, are common to the culture of Japan, a faraway island country in Oriental.

What is Zen for Sri Lankan people ?

l  What is Zen? 

To understand Zen through speaking words makes errors. Because Zen appreciates to understand through practicing. Zen has no forms. It is expressed through borrowing cultural forms. For example, calligraphy, drawing pictures, tea ceremony, the flower arrangement, or making Japanese garden. It is well known that Zen keeps the tradition of the Sanga organization and conservative Buddhism in Japan. There are some verses, “as like a rhinoceros horn”, in Sutta-Nipata. It is my opinion that this is the origin of Zen training. Therefore I can say, there is the common starting point between Sri Lankan Buddhism and Japanese Zen.

 

In the 6th century Zen was conveyed to China by Bodhi Dharma, who was a prince in south Indian country. After that, Zen was greatly developed under the influence of Chinese philosophy, Taoism, Confucianism. As you know, Buddhism was oppressed several times by the northern nations in China. However Zen had kept the Dharma lighting. Why was Zen able to carry out? Because Zen can educate their disciples without Buddhist Sutras or Buddha’s statues. It has common history between Sri Lanka and Zen. During the colonial period by Portugal, Buddhist light was almost going out because Sri Lankan Buddhism was oppressed. But through the efforts by the Sunga Buddhism restoration.

 

As I said previously, Zen has no forms. So, when a Christian practice Zazen, he becomes a distinguished Christian. When a physicist practices Zazen, he becomes a peaceful physicist. There are so many battles and problems about the politics or the religions in the world. I don’t think that Zen can solve these problems immediately. However, we can change ourselves. Buddha’s philosophy of peace is a self-reform. Also it is the common teaching between Sri Lankan Buddhism and Zen. I wish to learn them together.

寺院建築の大工さんを訪ねて

アジス・アベイサンダ氏はスリランカで仏教寺院、パゴダや学校などを設計する建築デザイナーです。4月17日、来日の機会にアジス氏と某建設会社を訪れました。社長に会社内と製材工場を案内していただきました。

以前は一般住宅の仕事もしておりましたが、近年は寺院建築専門でさせていただいております。屋根に使う松材などがほとんど手に入らなくなりましたので現在はヒノキを中心に使っています。当社は製材所と貯木場をもっていますので製材と乾燥ができます。その分、建築経費をおさえることができます。一般住宅の建築材はすべて4メールです。寺院建築では、長いものは12メールの材料を使いますので製材所をもっていないとできません。

このヒノキ材は14メートルあります。樹齢は約200年です。山の持ち主さんから依頼があって、直接山から切り出しました。そのように材木市場だけではなく、山から切り出すこともあります。木材の仕入れにあちこち走り回わっています。ヒノキはこのように粗削りをして4年ほど自然乾燥させます。現在、2年乾燥させたところです。ケヤキ材だともっと長く乾燥させなければなりません。木材の種類によって乾燥の方法が違います。当社では機械乾燥はしません。すべて自然乾燥です。ですから完成まで時間がかかります。

丸柱はこのように背割りをいれます。そうしなければ柱にヒビが入ります。背割りの入った方は壁、もしくは目立たない方へ向けます。屋根の中などひびが入ってもかまわないものには背割りは入れません。これは柱の上にのせ、屋根をうける箱組です。このような複雑な曲線はコンピューター制御の機械で削ります。桁に彫る雲の模様や、柱のゾウさんの顔は手彫りです。当社ではそのような彫刻を他の業者に発注することなく、すべてここで職人が彫刻します。

完成しますと屋根材は外から見えません。ですが屋根材の加工がいちばん難しいです。このように手書きで図面を書き、実物大に合板で模型を作り、削ります。屋根のハネ木には神経を使います。屋根瓦の重量は1坪1トン以上あります。それをハネ木の天秤で支えます。台風や地震の揺れをこれで逃がす仕組みになっています。屋根、四隅の木組みは複雑です。屋根の中には外に出た分の三倍くらい入っています。屋根の中でハネ木が重ならないように組みます。

We visited the carpenter master.

Mr. Ajith Abeysundara is a construction designer in Sri Lanka, who design Buddhist temples, pagodas, and a schools. At 17th April this year, we visited the carpenter master and his company at taking advantage of his Japan trip opportunity. The carpenter master showed us his company and lumber-mill kindly.       

The master: 

In years ago, we constructed the ordinary houses. However now a days, we make a specialty of a temple and a shrine construction. Because be hard to get the pine trees which use in the roof, so we use mainly a hinoki ; a Japanese cypress. Our company has the lumber-mill and the lumberyard, so can lumbering and drying by ourselves. Therefore we can reduce the costs. Every ordinary constructions use the wood pillars which has four meter. Sometimes we use it as 12 meter. So, we cannot do it without keeping the lumber-mill. 

This cypress has 14 meter long. It has 200 years. Because of the offering by the mountain owner, we cut down it and hauled out from the mountain directly. Like that, we do it not only the lumber-market but also cutting down from the mountain. Usually, I go to around anywhere for stocking the lumbers. Like that, we keep to dry Japanese cypress with roughly cutting for four years. It has been two years. In the case of a keyaki ; a zelkova tree, we have to dry for four years and over. It is different drying the way according to the kind of tree. We do nothing the machine drying system, always do the nature drying for them. So, it need long time to do it completely.

We cut a slit in a circular pillar like this. If nothing it, the pillars will get many cracks. We will turn the slit cutting side toward the wall or the unremarkable side. We will do nothing it in the roof side, in which may have the cracks. 

These are the setting boxes to be on a pillar and to sustain a roof. The complexed carves are done by the machine, controlled by a computer. A cloud design on the girder or the elephant head are by a hand-carved. This company nothing give an order with another trader. Our craftsmen carve all of them.

When completely constructed it, we cannot see the inside of the roof. However making the roof woods is the most difficult. We will drew it like this on the paper by hand, and will make the full-size model by plywood, and will carve it. We are a strain on our nerves when setting the hanegi ; the balanced wood in the roof. 

The weight of roof tiles has 1 ton kg per 3.3 meter square. The hanegi ; the balance wood support it. It has the mechanism which will release to quake about violently at the earth quake or the typhoon. It has the complicated construction about four corner in the roof. Three times long wood between the outside go through into the roof. We will make it as nothing be piled up each other.

スリランカには梵鐘、鐘楼はありません。小さな鐘はあります。お寺の中に木造の建物はあります。実は日本の五重塔は舎利を納めるブッダのお墓ですので、スリランカのパゴダと同じです。比叡山延暦寺の根本中堂と呼ばれる本堂の造りとスリランカ、キャンディー市仏歯寺の仏殿の様式がたいへん似ています。ブッダを祀る厨子の前に煩悩の海を象徴するプールがある、という造りです。これは意外な共通点です。スリランカの寺院建築に使う木材はチーク材が多いです。これは舟の甲板に使う木材で雨に強く、長持ちするですが、堅くて加工しにくいのです。スリランカでは地震はほとんどありませんので、日本の建築とはまったく耐震基準が違います。スリランカの青空はスカイブルーですので、白いパゴダが空に映えてきれいです。日本の寺院建築の技術は1300年ほど前に韓国から伝えられました。それが現在、このように日本の風土や環境に合うようになって残されています。後世に伝えていきたい文化です。

この寺は天台宗に属していて、創建以来約1300年の歴史があります。スリランカの仏教は2500年の歴史ですので、それから比べると新しいですが、この寺は日本で最も古いお寺の一つで、天智天皇の創建です。建物は16世紀の再建です。仏像はどれも5メートルもあり、平安時代、鎌倉時代の作で、国の重要文化財に指定されています。どれも一本の木でできています。スリランカの上座部仏教では仏像は釈迦如来だけですが、大乗仏教にはたくさんの仏像があります。その理由は、人にはいろいろな立場があり、職業があり、お国柄があり、それぞれ違った考えをもっています。その立場に応じてブッダの説法があるということです。観世音菩薩は大乗仏教ではブッダの慈悲を表しています。ブッダは「たとえば母親が命をかけて我が乳呑児をまもるように、周囲の人々にも愛情をそそぎなさい」(スッタニパータ)と言われました。その姿が観世音菩薩です。日本人は仏陀の教え、慈悲を母親の愛情に重ねて理解しようとます。それで日本の仏像はお母さんの顔に似ているといわれます。外国の仏像と比べると、そのことがよくわかります。ブッダの愛情は場合によって厳しいこともあります。それが隣の馬頭観音で、怖い顔をした仏像です。こちらは阿弥陀如来です。インドで1世紀ごろに起きた「阿弥陀信仰」を説く仏像です。周りの4体は仏教を護る神さまたちで、いきいきとしています。仏像の頭を見てください。髪の毛が二段になっています。体全体が流れるような衣の模様になっていて、ふくよかな女性のように丸みをおびています。これをグプタ様式と呼びます。4世紀から6世紀インドのグプタ時代にできた仏像様式です。それが中国へ伝わり、朝鮮から日本に伝わりました。日本の仏像はほとんどこの様式です。ガンダーラ様式はギリシャ風です。創建当時の屋根瓦を展示してあります。インドの「カパーラ」が日本語の「瓦」になりました。スリランカのシンハラ語でゴミのことを「ガラクタ」と言いますね。日本語でも役に立たない物を「ガラクタ」といいます。シンハラ語と日本語は全く違う言語ですが仏教用語はほとんど同じです。たとえば、菩提=ビディー、達磨=ダーマ、般若=パンニャ、舎利=スリー、雛(小さい)=ヒナ、などです。探せばまだたくさんあるでしょう。

”Kanjijai-Bosatsu is all beings” 


In the Tang era, a translator translated from India words with lots of pains. Kanjijai-Bosatsu and Kanzeon-Bosatsu are same word of which translated Avalokitesvara. Bodhisatova in India Theravada Buddhism era, was the before situation when Buddha’s enlightenment. As for Mahayana, it means all beings of what destined to become a Buddha.


Buddha taught us that we have a figure of what getting enlightenment as it is. Let us face up to reality and pray for all, that is Buddhist faith, and to inquire into oneself, that is Zazen. Zen practicing need to have this belief and meditation.


I believe that we must be reflect on our past to slough off the thinking about the advantage over all beings. Let us believe to have Buddha’s hart within all beings, as it is.
