Samu and Zazen

2021-11-02 | Zazen

The Zen Center in Kyoto holds a zazen meeting for elementary and junior high school students on a school excursion. One of them was five high school students from Yokohama who wanted to help with cleaning. After zazen, they helped us for a couple of hours by cleaning outside and weeding the garden. They told us that was fun, then left the center.

I remember that an elementary school in Saitama sent us 500 hand-sewn rags as a thank-you for our zazen. I think that making so many rags took a great deal of time.

Also I often receive thank-you letters such as, ‘My ears seem to have improved,’ and ‘I have never seen a lotus flower so beautiful until I experienced zazen. Thank you very much’.
In the fall of 2004, I gave a zazen meeting for 16 Americans. After zazen, one of the participants, a big man, asked me a question.
“I can hear many birds singing very well. I've never heard so many birds before. My hearing seems to be getting better. Why is that?”
I answered in this way.
"Because you did zazen quietly, you must have been able to hear better.“

Living with Buddha‘s heart

2021-10-25 |

When you have a child and raise it, you will understand the love and hardships of your mother. The Buddha’s teaching should be understood through such experiences. I remember the story told by my senior monk.

After the last war, there was a woman I knew who had come back with her two children from Korean Peninsula. She thought it was difficult to bring them back with her, so she left her oldest son to a couple from the Kanto region. I heard that she officially adopted him later. That son had a happy life even during the time of food shortage, and he was able to go to university with relatively little inconvenience.

The second son lived a life of poverty with his mother. When he came back from Korea, he often ate grass on the road, but fortunately he was strong enough to survive.

If she was asked which of her sons she was more worry about, she said that was her eldest son whom she had adopted, because he had grown up in a happy environment and did not know hardships. Her second son, on the other hand, would be able to endure any hardship as he had survived the hardships of poverty in those days.
A mother’s love is great!

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami The 6th-1

2021-10-18 | Zazen
The sixth lecture  ‘Awaken Karma‘

59) The rice dealer said making a joke with laughing yesterday.
Because listening the Emptiness or Mu in the holy sutra lecture every single day, so, I don’t have to worry if I suffer any losses ever.
Even if don’t understand the profound meaning of emptiness, or at least, having a broad-minded and loose feelings that you are as much as enough with the birth of the nakedness, are correct as it is.

60) Reflecting on the original meaning of Hannya and doing it without wasting it, I would like to contribute to our life and society with all our heart and comfort so far.

61) In short, if looking every inch, Buddhist fundamental teaching means Karma after all. The relations of interdependence of give-and-take and the principle that everything have the endless cycle, those truth come from the parent’s body named Karma completely.

62) To tell the truth, the reason why a human’s son became Buddha was that realized Karma. Moreover, it is Buddhism that Buddha who got enlightenment taught the truth of Karma through his experience namely. Therefore, Buddhism means Buddha’s teaching. For all that because Buddha was realized person, Buddhism is for human being after all. And Buddhism is not the teaching by God, is the teaching by a human, doesn’t stay the heaven, stay the earth.

63)Alpha and omega in the religions, the first and the last, they are ultimately though for human really.
From those who going astray rise to those who enlightened. From those who sleeping rise to those who awakened.
There is the religious primary object in there.
All in all, the religion does not command a distant view and is here in our hart. The pure land does not another place. Where do you ask with devoting yourself? Where is the religion without human life at least?
Therefore, the question of why you need the religion means why you have to live at the same time.

64) Nothing is my alive rejoice, nothing is my sadness of death. they are all lies. It is right for us to feel the joy of living and to die with sadness. He who get enlightenment as living and death to be one, feels alive joy, feels death with sadness. It is good as it is. The important issue for us is that not being obsessed with it. Don’t be a slave about it.

65) Where is like a religion without human nature?
A religion needs not for those who live in the world of heaven with getting be pretentious. Those who have muddy job and are worried in the world need it.
It requires a religion for the human world where cannot be dream as a dream or give up for lost.
Moreover, you will reach the religious world by deeply cultivating your own human way. You will reach it naturally. By without deeply cultivating your own hart, if searching your neighboring place, there is nothing religious fountain.

Lotus flower

2021-10-16 | Zazen

The lotus flower (or water lily in India) blooms in muddy fields and is not stained by mud. For that reason, it is the symbol of enlightenment. In ancient Indian literature, it is a symbol of love, and in Brahmanism, it is said that Brahma was born from a lotus flower.
If you look at a lotus flower from above, you will see that it already has seeds. In other flowers, seeds are formed after the flower blooms and the stamen is pollinated, but in the lotus, the seeds and the flower are simultaneous.

My followers sometimes ask me, “If I do something bad, will I be punished?”  There is no doubt. It is a good teaching that good results come from good causes and bad results come from bad causes. However, there is a mind of dividing Good and Evil there. In the world of Buddha, there is no dividing Good and Evil.

For example, there is a cup of rice seeds here. Rice cultivation is said to have been introduced to Japan about 2000 years ago. During that time, there is no telling how much work and breeding has gone into the production of this rice. So, we need to think about an immeasurable value. The cause and effect are in the rice grain at the same time. Let’s eat a meal of rice with gratitude. Gratitude eliminates our worldly desire to divide Good and Evil.

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami The 5th

2021-09-15 | zen
‘One who commit his heart and soul into emptiness.’

48) In May, the season of fresh green every single year. I recall the famous verse.

‘The green leave for eyes, the mountain little cuckoo, the first bonito fish in early summer.’

Japanese people should be able to fully understand it without explanation.
And then, I recall another one in addition.

‘What a sweet smell of adhered indigo to my palm in seasonal change of clothing.’

This verse is the best expression for a new refreshing feeling of seasonal change of clothing.

49) No matter what your job, when working with all our might, we are unaware of the passage of time. We feel an hour or two hours as five or ten minutes. However, it was not that an hour became five minutes. By transcending time, we feel as that. It seems to exist but nothing.

50)  Scarcely need saying, ‘The green leave for eyes‘ means the world of eyes. It is the world of being reflected in eyes. And the subject is the world of form as the green leave for eyes. Our eyes noticed the world of form as the green leaves by way of an eyeball, became aware it. Our eyes noticed, ‘It became wholly new greenery.’But if saying, I want to go play somewhere. It is not the eye aria.
“Zoitsu Agon Sutra” teaches that our eyes eat form, our ears eat voice. The food of eyes is form. The food of ears is voice. Wish beautiful scenery. That is rejoice of eyes. Desire good voice, that is rejoice of ears.

51) Buddhists offer up incense when attending a funeral. It comes from that ‘All beings eat incense after their passing away’. Therefore, we need foods not only for a mouth but also eyes, ears, nose.

52) Everything is related together as an interdependence. The mutually relationship are important not only humans, but also for everything in the world. Therefore, it is not a taking-and-taking, is a relation of a give-and-take. We should understand to giving life and to be receiving life simultaneously. That means the relation of Karma and an interdependence.

53) Moreover, everything is not only existing of a give-and-take, but everything is passing, moving, like a river. We cannot wash our legs with water of the same river. The water of the river continues to flow. The water used to wash my feet is irreversible. Not just the water of river, we are constantly changing. My existence yesterday does not exist today.

54) I cannot live without society. My life is not just for me merely. I keenly aware of the blessings of society when I fully understanding I am maintained and nurtured by all. Well, have to feel that way.

55) Now that my physiognomy means social aspect and the social aspect means my physiognomy, our feeling of gratitude to the world and people are gushing out from the bottom of our mind. We cannot but say to be out of the question one who make a curse another one and have a grudge the society immoderately by nothing confession.

56) One who realizes the learning of Karma once and committed himself into the emptiness of Hannya can understand fleeting life and precious life simultaneously. In fact, for fleeting reason, our lives are precious.
That is ‘I feel joy in cherry blossoms because of scattering’. There is the flower life due to scattering. We have a precious life and gratitude for life.

57) Just one thousand five hundred years ago, there was a young Buddhist scholar, named Shojyo in China. He was the best scholar among three-thousands of Kumarajiva’s disciples. But owing to the incident, by aroused king’s anger, he just got the death penalty at that time. He begged to be alive to seven days strangely. He completely wrote “The Hozoron; The theory of owned Dharma” in the prison during those days. He was thirty-one years old.

58) It is said, there are lots of way. However, there is only one way I must do. Giving this lecture of Hannyashin sutra opportunity, learning the path of Hannya truly, I would like to walk this way steadily as it is.

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami The 4th

2021-09-05 | zen
‘The eternal life.’

35) In short, ‘emptiness’ is ‘emptiness of Hannya’ and does not simply mean like a dualism, to be or nothing. One of ancient Chinese Buddhist master, Shyuken Daishi (644~712) said.

If see ‘form is emptiness’, he will get the great wisdom.
If see ‘emptiness is form’, he will get deep affection.

This verse makes me consider. Because great wisdom means profound wisdom and is true wisdom namely.

36) Correct Jihi; love is not blind love like a cow licking her calf. Jihi in Buddhist teaching means that correct love based on real wisdom namely. Therefore, at least in Buddhism, Jihi and wisdom are two and are one simultaneously. When I hear the name of the Buddhist image now, I recall Buddhist image which has a gentle figure like a Avalokiteshvara or Jizo. But there is a fierce look at Buddhist image like a Fudo-myoo; Acala.

37) By the way, there is no distinction about parental affection for children like high and low. The expression of affection, of course, there is a certain peculiar attitude between father’s affection and mother’s affection for child. Affection of a strict father and affection of a tender mother, speaking of distinction, that is it. Those are his scolding affection and her hugging affection.

38)At least in Buddhism, the philosophy of wisdom and the religion of Jihi; affection are two and are one together.  Children may think that their parent’s mind may change their mind. That is child’s prejudice. In fact, nothing is difference affection between father and mother to their child. By scolding and hugging once, child will never go off the right path, will never fall into evil path, and grow honesty and fast.

39) Issa Kobayashi said that it is cold no one scolding me at snooze. It is lonely absolutely that we have no one give scolding. We should need one who gives scolding when grow up adult increasingly. I should want those who have a frank and critical opinion to my behavior. There are many persons who give to blame and criticize behind me back. However, in fact, we have very few persons to criticize directly.

40) For example, even if different facial expressions, the tears of wisdom and the tears of affection are nothing distinction in the mind. My ancle who died thirteen years ago, remained this poem for me.

Father illuminated and mother had shed a drop of tears,
and the Nadeshiko stood up by the same benefit.

I don’t know who composed it. I think, keep in mind, it is a remarkable poem surely.

41) Owing to strict father’s mind and tender mother’s mercy, when I remember delightful memories and look back on dear my parents, I am deeply grateful for discovering the profound and holy Buddhism as a philosophy or religion.

42) Hannya is said to mean a Buddhist mother. Indeed, Hannya is mother who raises all Buddha and is the basis for the birth of all Buddha.

43) From a high point, from a so-called holistic perspective, if you see everything with your own eyes, all things are neither arising nor ceasing, neither dirt nor purity, neither increasing nor decreasing.

44) Like that law of energy is the scientific truth and the electronic quantity which create everything in the universe is unchangeable law, everything done by gathering Karma and keeping it empty are neither arising nor ceasing, neither increasing nor decreasing altogether.

45) Zen master Dogen said that to awaken one’s life and death is Karma what the significant matter for Buddhist. However, awakening one’s life and death is not only Buddhist disciples. I think everybody have to do that.

46) ‘Even if passing away in Musashino field, I keep on the Japanese spirit.’ Shoin Yoshida (1830~1859) who left the poem of farewell, passed away like a dewdrop of the execution, was a just person who was not bound by life and death. He was not afraid of death. He transcended ‘life and death’ with obedience of ‘life and death’, acquired the truth of ‘neither arising nor ceasing’, the so-called had done alive with death. He sent a letter to his sister like that.
‘Now, immortality means that, what feel familiar with, Buddha and Confucius are alive now. because, people delight, feel grateful, feel with awe them.’ It is sure, should be appreciate those words.

47) Let’s live to be strong, firmly, calmly, making up our mind to be with death looking for eternal life.

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami the 3ed

2021-08-28 |
‘Form is Emptiness’

21) I remembered the haiku written by Nagao Ogasawara.
Sãriputta, look, ‘emptiness is form’ in full bloom.
This haiku is a complete expression of the verse of Hannyashin sutra. And I will introduce it today. Needless to say This simple verse expresses skillfully, the word of emptiness what Hannniyashin sutra powerfully teaches with earnestly effort is not definitely simply meaning like as hollowness or nothing.

22) Without understanding Karma, you cannot grasp emptiness. By the way, I first said Sãriputta. Of course, this is the personal name. He was called the most superior who getting wisdom among Buddha’s disciples. He was a Brahma monk in the first place and was a famous for being a Buddha’s disciple with a marvelous motive. While walking in the town of Rãjagrha, Sãriputta happened to meet with Asvajit, a disciple of Buddha. And he heard the amazing truth from Asvajit.
It is that ‘All reasons rise from Karma. Buddha teaches that Karma.’ We may hear it as a commonplace and mediocre words. But the great scholar Sãriputta listened to the words of Karma, just like the footsteps of a valley in the sky.

23) I think, we should reaffirm the idea of Buddhism,
which has been the source of Japanese spiritual resources for 1300 years, especially the thought of Karma that is the origin of Buddhist thought. Karma, it is a very old word, a common word. However, that is definitely true.

24) To understand ‘Dependent origination’ means to understand Buddhism. I think, it is definitely true. Gautama Siddhartha realized the principles and truths of ‘Dependent origination’ by himself, so, he finally became Buddha. That is the fact that Buddha achieved enlightenment under The Bo Tree actually.
Buddha first discovered a common eternal truth that everything rises from ‘Dependent origination’. Hence, the principle of ‘Dependent origination’   was nothing creation by Buddha newly.
Buddha was not creator of ‘Dependent origination’ but one who discovered it.

25) ‘Dependent origination’ means the relationship between cause, chance, and result. It is called Engi in Japanese. Namely, cause means the factor, the force to the result. Chance means an indirect force to helps the cause and produces the result.
For example, there is a grain of rice seed. In this case, a grain of rice is the cause namely. By the way, by putting on it on your desk, there is only just a grain forever. But, if seeding it into the farm, adding something force like as rain, water, sunlight, fertilizes, a grain of rice be up to plentiful ear of rice in fall. This is the relationship between ‘Dependent origination and result’

26) The stumbled stone is a small relationship. Even those who swing their sleeves together are related in another world. But it is not a reason or theory. It is not about thinking and becoming true. It does not mean thinking or not thinking, whether it is a Buddhist theory or not. This is definitely true. Fact and the truths are eloquence above all.
27) Today never exist without yesterday by no means. Today does not simply exist apart from yesterday. Today is not just today, is carrying yesterday on its back and holding tomorrow in its arms.
Anyway, not everything in our world exists independently, but there is a limitless relationship like as vertical and horizontal actually. Therefore, I stand at the intersection of infinite space and eternal time.

28) Why was the inventor of metro, Isambard・K・Brunel able to dig the bottom of the Thames. He was inspired by a shipworm digging a timber. He had done completely digging the bottom of the Thames. This was called an impossible digging by human ability.
There doesn’t seem to be no relationship between the Metro and a shipworm on the surface. But they have deep relationship together. Everything made by ‘Dependent origination’, Five components, the formation by harmonizing matter and mind, etc., the world doesn’t have continued to exist forever as one. Everything is constantly changing and moving.
29) According to Buddhism, everything is called ‘U’ in Japanese. Everything is temporary and momentary. Anyway, there is nothing eternal and immortal being. The cherry blossoms which have bloomed and germinated will soon be scattered. It will be a completely dead tree. There are scattered cherry blossoms, the rest of cherry blossoms, and finally both scattered cherry blossoms.

30) One day the mountain monk asked Ikkyu oshyo.
‘You mentioned the Buddhist Dharma. Where is the Buddhist Dharma?’
So, Ikkyu answered immediately.
‘It is in your breast.’
Upon hearing that, he took the dagger from his pocket, pushed and rebelled.
‘Show me.‘
The witty Ikkyu responded immediately after returning the poem.

Cherry blossoms bloom every year in Yoshino.
Cut them out to see the existing cherry blossoms.

The mountain monk bravely did it, but finally gave up, became a disciple of Ikkyu at last.

31) Looking for in a heavy snowstorm, there is nothing cherry blossoms. This is ‘the form is emptiness’ as it is. It looks like dead trees, however, the branches of the cherry bloom with a smile coming in the spring fog. This is ‘emptiness is form’ namely. In any circumstances it is wrong to think that you will exist forever and say emptiness from the beginning and deny everything.

32) One who feels terrible waste to a paper dropping on the passage is excellently recognized economically value from the beginning as understanding Buddhist Dharma.
It is a matter, how to hold your mind. In short, is the material more value than the mind, or is the spirits more value than the materials? Does material dominate the mind, or does the mind dominate material? Do we spend money or does money use us?

33) Acting right and practicing the middle way is a necessary matter in every world and time. If the correct human life is provided by right seeing, then we must have a clear understanding of what the right seeing is. Anyway, even if living in physic poverty, let us live in mental rich life at least.

34) By appreciating karmic tenet and Karmic philosophy, even if living in poverty, we want to live in rich life at least. Wishing to do conduct in pure, right, firmly on the earth. I think, one who commit himself to the tenet of Karma and appreciate emptiness of Hannya is just the man of the taking the middle way. A living Avalokitesvara will born from such men, absolutely.

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami the 2nd

2021-08-26 | Zazen
‘Better to walk than to talk’

8) There is four ways of to look at things like as to see, to observe, to inspect, to perceive.
Incidentally, to see means seeing with the naked eye. To observe means Avalokitesvara’s observation, is what to see in view of hart. So, to observe means to see with the heart eye minutely. To tell the truth, we able to notice real feature distinctly by to observe.

9) Musashi Miyamoto said that he would see or observe with his eyes. As he mentions, only the eyes of observation can learn the secrets of Japanese fencing. He insisted on observation and conformed that the eye of mind was the most important training for the Japanese fencing. But it is also important to do business, study, and everything else, not just only Japanese fencing in Japan. Meantime, the most important thing is to see by eye of mind.

10) It should be attention that the character is Gyo which means practicing Prajunya Pramita. It is heavily important this character. I did not dare anticipate Goethe’ words. Generally speaking, the soul of religion is better to walk than to talk. Well, the religion should not talk, should walk. Moreover, Gyo means this practicing. Practicing means to walk, to carry out.

11) Buddhism teaches three types of wisdom in short. Those are the wisdom to hear, the wisdom to think, the wisdom to practice.
First, listening wisdom simply means wisdom that can be heard from the ear. That is a little wisdom. That is certainly wisdom. But it cannot say the truth wisdom.
Second, the wisdom to think means the wisdom gained by thinking. It is the wisdom to reconsider and judge the wisdom of hearing again. That is the wisdom that is being considered.
In addition, the practicing wisdom means to grasp by practicing. You can get it by practicing yourself. Therefore, this is the religious area. That means it is better to walk than to talk.

12) Let us chant Hannyashin sutra by our own hart and learn it by body practicing. Let us practice the religion of it not just only knowledge of the philosophy voluntarily.

13) First, let me talk about the story of ‘Five components‘. This word was translated from the Sanskrit words Pañca Skandha. Pañca means five as a number. Skandha means an aggregate. Therefore, Buddhist scholar interpreted it as an aggregate and a component. Moreover, Five Component are always in motion themselves, not stopped. Sanskrit scholars translated it into movement. It is very interesting.

14) Materialism that explains everything in the world, Spiritualism that sees everything in the world as the focus of the spirit, they have a prejudice together. Buddhism does not approve them.
Buddhism has a basic view that subjectivity, objectivity, and everything that consists of collection of five elements. So, the so-called, the teaching of to be one with things and mind or denying separation the bodily shape and mind teach us the correct view of the world or life.

15)  A complete expression of our language and thoughts is actually incomplete. We cannot easily talk about our thought and what we want to talk about. The miserable world and the most enjoyable heart cannot be expressed as it is by writing or speaking.

16) From ancient times, it has been said that Yuima’s silence is like thunder. The word of silence has big considerable meanings. Firefly which cannot sing suffer from love. It is said that you cannot cry when you are sad really. That is the saddest world. The saddest time is when tears do not come out.

17)  When someone asks for the impression of drinking a cup of water, how do you respond about it? You cannot understand to taste water unless you drink it yourself. Whether it is delicious or not, spicy one or sweet one, you cannot decide to taste it. So, needless to say. Let us drink a cup of tea.

18) When you have had a child, you can understand the worries and joys of parenting before anything else, like that, you can thank not only your parents but also child simultaneously. Thanks to notice completely owing to child that child is most cute existence than others in the world. We must absolutely be grateful for the love of our children, the joy of acting altruistically, and is taught the unselfishness through parenting children.

19) Behind just one word of ‘emptiness’ is actually a vast and profound teaching. The emptiness of word is fully incorporated into the profound philosophy of Buddhism. This is the extract of Buddhism.

20) Avalokitesvara directly experienced the profound emptiness. One who truly understands emptiness and devotes himself completely to emptiness is undoubtedly alive Avalokitesvara. Hence, at least we need to discover Avalokitesvara in our own figure and find ourselves into Avalokitesvara.

“The lecture of Hannyashin sutra” by Kakushyo Takagami The 1st

2021-08-23 | 生涯学習
Kakushyo Takagami (1894~1948) was a monk belonging Shingon sect and a Buddhist scholar. “The lecture of Hannyashin sutra“ was published 1934 and was the best sale for long. It is marvelous recording lecture. It is useful to understand for ordinary people due to writing down for radio broadcasting while divided twelve times. He studied Zen by way of Dr. Kitaro Nishida in Otani university in Kyoto. So, he had knowledge of Zen.

'The truth wisdom'
1) If seeing our existing world by the wisdom of Hannya, there is nothing useless and worthless things in all respect.

2)There is nothing worthless things in the world to the truth awakened person. by Buddhas eyes all grasses are medicines. One who feels worthless them means what the wisdom’s brain is small. If viewing by the large wisdom’s brain named Hannya, everything means the expression of the holy truth.

3)Today and tomorrow are insignificant days. By gathering insignificant day, we have built up our life. Far from it, it is holy single day. Which do you choice to achieve your life, an insignificant day or a holy day? For that reason, it is significant keeping on our mind together. it means how to have your mind.

4) There is nothing worthless itself. Because the wisdom’s brain to see is simply small. According to the wisdom of Hannya which woven into Hannyashin sutra, there is nothing worthless things in the world. On the contrary, they are all holy beings to each other in which becoming to be front or back, shaded place or sunny place, making full use of oneself or by others.

5) By polishing the wisdom of Hannya having each other, we must be more sacredly and respectably used for all existence.

6) I am often inquired from audience. What is the teaching about Buddhism?
I respond simply.
‘Buddhism is Buddhas teaching. That is to say. Buddha’s teaching is that human become a Buddha.’
Buddhism teaches we become a Buddha, attain Buddhahood.

7)This sutra has nothing sound of religion, and never go out of date absolutely. It teaches us what is the real truth and the wisdom frankly as it is and is the fresh sutra forever.

A tiny awakening

2021-07-29 | 研修

A company Japan House in Moscow invited me as a speaker in the fall 2017. I spoke on ‘Zen culture and the drawing of Zen’. A lady asked me a question after the lecture.
‘What does Buddhas enlightenment mean?’

I answered her.
‘The Buddhas enlightenment has profound contents, so, I have nothing qualification to talk about it. But we have a chance of a tiny awakening in our usually life. Do you have a family or children? You had the difficulty to giving birth to a baby. But you are very happy with it. Childcare works hard and needs to be much worried. By way of such an experience you can understand the hardship of your mother. When you were young, you took a rebellious attitude toward your mother, don’t you? For the first time, you realized how much you owed to your parents. It was your tiny awakening. It is important to learn Buddha’s teaching through such experiences.

Invocation of Amitabha

2021-07-26 | zen

One of the disciples of The Venerable Honen, who founded Japanese Jodo sect was formerly a thief. When he was sleeping in the room next to Honen at night, Honen muttered something, so he secretly opened the sliding door a little. Honen had made an invocation of Amitabha with sitting on his bed confidentially. Honen noticed him and lied down to sleep. The disciple was surprised that Honen made effort to make an invocation of Amitabha wholeheartedly.

Honen made a long Buddhist rosary which has 1080 beads and took it, made one million times invocation of Amitabha. It needed through eight days without sleeping. Because Mokugenshi-sutra teaches it. They say that Honen achieved it twice.

Devoting oneself completely is the faith of Jodo. However, there is not only favorable matters for us in the world. If anything, there are a lot of unfavorable matters to devote Amitabha. It is nothing easy matter that devoting our own unfavorable to Amitabha.

I made a visit to Moscow State University in October 2013. I had a question from a female student from Tibet.
‘I am a Tibetan student studying abroad. Tibetan people have faith wholeheartedly. Faith is much marvelous world. I cannot explain it in words. I have a question. I think the faith is as well as Zazen. What do you think about it?’
I responded her.
Yes, it is as well as Zazen.

All sentient beings have Buddhas heart

2021-07-25 | zen lecture

What does sentient beings mean? It means what exists and has their life. It means human being in the first sense and all living things in the broad sense. It is written in Sanskrit as ‘sattva’ and means that there is blood flow.

Animals do not need Buddha’s teaching because they already have Buddha’s appearance. Carnivorous eat something else, but it is not bad thing. It is a providence of nature. It is human merely that have to learn Buddha’s teaching. Because we have selfish desire. If we leave desire running, our lives will be confused, and the world will be corrupted. It can be said that all evil things are due to human’s selfish desire.

What is Buddha? It means Gautama Siddhartha who was a historical person in the first meaning. The Mahayana Buddhist sutras teach us many kinds of Buddhas, just as Vairocana’s virtue illuminates in the world and Amitabha Buddha gives a sermon forever from the land of Perfect Bliss.

A student asked Dr. Kiyoshi Inokuchi who is an emeritus professor at Kyushu University.
‘What is my own truth?’
Dr. Inokuchi took some time into consideration and answered him.
‘Do you have ever volunteered to do your best and kindness to others? When he expressed his gratitude, did you feel joy at him then? That is your own truth.’
It is the Buddha’s heart that Dr. Inokuchi taught him ‘my truth’.
