“Zen master Hakuin“-1

At 330 years ago, Zen master Hakuin was born in Hara where Numazu City Sizuoka prefecture at present. It is said that he was the prominent Zen master who appear once in five hundred years. All of the present Lynzai Zen priests are the branched disciples of Zen master Hakuin. Each the fourteen temple groups of Japanese Linzai Zen sects are independent on their own. However, they have the common doctrine altogether. They have assembled the group which named Lynoh Ghogisyo：The organization of council system in all Lynzai and Ohbaku sects.

 Hakuin’s quite an achievement was what changed teaching Zen for ordinary people. Those who practiced Sanzen under Hakuin was 1300 disciples. Those who got enlightenment was about fifty disciples. Until that time, those who learning Zen were the statesmen or their surrounding people restrictively. One of his disciple was a neighboring old woman. They were noble Zen learned persons. People of every social stratums had come together under Hakuin’s teaching. 

Hakuin had been an all-night practicing Zazen when his twenty four years age. At hearing the sound of the big bel from far away, he got enlightenment. However, it was nothing genuine of enlightenment. He was a conceited mind that there was nothing monk got enlightenment extremely in three hundred years like me.

Thanks to a recommendation by his colleague, he visited Zen master Dokyo Etan (1642~1721) in Iiyama (presently Nagano prefecture).  Dokyo had studied under Zen master Sidho Bunan (1603~1676). Hakuin was taught by him to change his conceit.

 「白隠禅師」

白隠禅師は今から330年ほど前に原、現在の静岡県沼津市に生まれました。禅師は500年に一度のすぐれた禅僧といわれます。現在の臨済宗の僧侶はみな白隠の門下生です。日本の臨済宗14派はそれぞれ独立していますが禅における教義はまったく同じです。臨済宗各派で「臨黄合議所」というグループを作っています。

白隠の最も大きな功績は禅の庶民化です。白隠に参禅した弟子は1300人、悟りを開いたとされる弟子は50名ほどです。それまで禅を学ぶ人は為政者かその周辺の限られた人々だったのですが、白隠の弟子の中には近所のお婆さんもいて、それぞれ立派な禅者だったのです。白隠の元にはあらゆる階層の人々が集まりました。 

白隠は24歳のとき夜を徹して坐禅をし、夜明けに遠くの寺の鐘の音を聴いて悟りを開いたのです。しかしそのときはまだ本物の悟りではありませんでした。「自分のように痛快に悟ったものは300年間だれもいないだろう」と高慢な気持ちでした。白隠は友人の勧めで飯山（長野県）に道鏡慧端（1642~1721）を訪ねました。道鏡は至道無難禅師（1603～1676）について立派に禅を修めた人でした。そこで白隠は道鏡によってその高慢な気持ちを指導されたのです。
