仏G・
(Enzykl.
英G・The scientific cognition of truth is what I have laboured upon, and still do labour upon allways, in all of my philosophical endeavours.
仏G・
仏B・
(Enzykl.
Gelehrsamkeit ist noch nicht Wissenschaft.
英G・Mere erudition is not yet science.
仏G・
仏B・
(Enzykl.§14 Anm.)
英W・Unless it is a system, a philosophy is not a scientific production.
英G・A philosophising without system cannot be scientific at all.
仏G・
仏B・
(Enzykl.§42 Anm.)
英W・If thought is to be capable of proving anything at all, if logic must innsist upon the necessity of proofs, and if it proposes to teach the theory of demonstration, its first care should be to give a reason for its own subject-matter, and to see that it is necessary.
英G・If thinking has to be able to prove anything at all, if logic must require that proofs are given, and if it wants to teach us how to prove something, then it must above all be capable of proving its very own peculiar content, and able to gain insight into the necessity of this content.
(Enzykl.§10 Anm.)
英W・But the examination of knowledge can only be carried out by an act of knowledge. To examine this so-called instrument is the same thing as to know it. But to seek to know before we know is as absurd as the wise resolution of Scholasticus, not to venture into the water until he had learned to swim.
英G・But the investigation of cognition cannot take place in any other way than cognition; in the case of this so-called tool, the "investigation" of it means nothing but the cognition of it. But to want to have cognition before we have any is as absurd as the wise resolve of Scholasticus to learn to swim before he ventured into the water.
(Enzykl.§80 Zus.)
英W・Apart from Understanding there is no fixity or accuracy in the region of theory or of practice.
英G・Without the understnding there is no fixity or determinacy in the domains either of theory or of practice.
(Enzykl.§103 Zus.)
独・ (K.L.§103 Zus.)
英W・The case is similar in the world of mind: a more intensive character has a wider range with its effects than a less intensive.
英G・It is the same in the domain of spirit, too; a more intense character exerts influence over a wider range than a less intence one.
(Vorrede, S.14)
英B・The systematic developmrnt of truth in scientific form can alone be the true shape in which truth exists. To help to bring philosophy nearer to the forrm of science ── that goal where it can lay aside the name of ‚love‘ of knowledge and be actual knowledge ── that is what I have set before me. The inner necessity that knowledge should be science lies in its very nature; and the adequate and sufficient explanation for this lies simply and solely in the systematic exposition of philosophy itself.
英M・The true shape in which truth exists can only be the scientific sytem of such truth. To help bring philosophy closer to the form of Science, to the goal where it can lay aside the title ‚love of knowing‘ and be actual knowing ── that is what I have set myself to do. The inner necessity that knowing should be Science lies in its nature, and only the systematic exposition of philosophy itself provides it.
英B・What is "familialy known" is not properly known, just for the reason that it is "familiar".
英M・Quite generally, the familiar, just because it is familiar, is not cognitively understood. (p.18)
英B・The truth is the whole. The whole is, however, is merely the essencial nature reaching its completeness through the process of its own development.
英M・The True is the whole. But the whole ist nothing other than the essence consummating itself through its development.
(Rechtsphilo.; Enzykl.§6 Anm.)
独・Was vernünftig ist, das ist wirklich, / und was wirklich ist, das ist vernünftig.
英W・What is reasonable is actual / and What is actual is reasonable.
英G・What is rational is actual / and what is actual is rational.
仏G・
仏B・
(Rechtsphil. Vorrede; Bd.7 S.28)
英・The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dark.
(Enzykl.§205 Zus.)
英・What stands on the threshold is often precisely what is most unsatisfactpry.
(Enzykl.§205 Zus.)
英・The negativity of finite things is their own dialectic, and in order to ascertain it we must pay attention to their positive content.
(Enzykl.§24 Zus.3)
英G・With experiences everything depends on the mind with which we approach actuality. A great mind has great experiences, and in the motley play of experience spots the crucial point.

Le vrai est index sui et falsi.
