Seattle Mariners
2006 Finish: 78-84, 4th place(ビリ)

Outfield
Seattle is more solid in the outfield than it has been in years. The decision by Ichiro Suzuki in August to move to center from right field enabled the club to go out in the offseason and add Jose Guillen, who plays nice defense, has a terrific arm and who has some RBI and power potential. Left fielder Raul Ibanez is coming off his finest season -- career-high 33 homers and 123 RBIs -- and he seems more and more comfortable batting in the heart of the Seattle lineup. With Ichiro and Guillen, Seattle has two of the toughest outfield arms to run against.

Final Analysis
Seattle has something of a new look, but the Mariners have many of their old problems, including too little starting pitching. There are many who say the offense, with the additions of Guillen and Vidro, is the best in the division, but that has yet to be proven; too often the last couple of seasons, the bats have disappeared for long stretches. The defense is the core of the team, and if Seattle can get someone to do setup work for Putz with the same kind of success Soriano had, that will go a long way toward making 2007 a season worth watching.

MLB2007年レビュー - レッドソックス

Boston Red Sox
2006 Finish: 86-76, 3rd place

Rotation
For all of the attention placed on the acquisition of Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Red Sox feel that they added not one starter, but two: The other is Jonathan Papelbon. The Sox announced late last year that Papelbon would go from closer to starter, giving the team a nucleus of Papelbon, Matsuzaka and Josh Beckett in the years to come. While that group could grow if and when Jon Lester continues his return from lymphoma, the 2007 Sox will also have 40-somethings Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield to rely on. The starting rotation projects as one of the strengths of the team, though depth beyond the starting five could become a concern given the age of Schilling and Wakefield.

Bullpen
For all of the questions that face the Red Sox entering 2007, none is greater than this: Who will close? Papelbon emerged as one of the very best finishers in baseball last year, but late-season concerns about his shoulder prompted the switch back to the rotation. And minus Papelbon, Red Sox relievers had a 5.07 ERA that would have ranked 12th in the American League. So what did the Red Sox decide to do? Given the absence of an obvious replacement on the trade and free-agent markets, the Red Sox rebuilt their bullpen by bringing in Brendan Donnelly, J.C. Romero and Joel Pineiro, the latter of whom the club signed as a potential closer. Lefty Hideki Okajima was acquired from Japan, while Mike Timlin was re-signed to go along with Julian Tavarez, Craig Hansen and Manny Delcarmen. Let the auditions begin.

Final Analysis
After going to the playoffs for three straight seasons from 2003-05, the Red Sox slipped up in '06. Despite a $135 million payroll, the Sox finished with an 86-76 record, good for only third place behind the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. On paper, this club looks a good deal stronger, particularly in the lineup and starting rotation. If the Red Sox can get their bullpen situation straightened out and settle on a closer, they should be back in the mix for a postseason berth.

Detroit Tigers
2006 Finish: 95-67, 2nd place

Final Analysis
Can they do it again? Before you answer that, remember that you never expected the Tigers to do it the first time. Getting back to the World Series won't be easy, but with their pitching and their improved offense, no one should be surprised if the Tigers do get back there. One thing is certain: No one is going to ask whether they can finish above .500.
