Now that they have Andy Pettitte, the New York Yankees want Roger Clemens, too.

"He’s kind of like your perfect employee," general manager Brian Cashman said Thursday after welcoming Andy Pettitte back to Yankee Stadium.

Clemens pitched for the Yankees alongside Pettitte from 1999-2003, helping them win two World Series titles and four AL pennants. The pair spent the last three seasons with their hometown Houston Astros.

"If Roger is interested in coming to New York, I’d love to talk to him," Cashman said. "He came in here and not only delivered a huge performance on the field but had a major impact within the clubhouse."

New York hasn’t reached the World Series since Clemens left. The Yankees traded Randy Johnson back to the Arizona Diamondbacks this week, and Cashman admitted the move put the rotation at risk.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is choosing among returning to the Astros, retiring or rejoining the Yankees or Boston Red Sox [team stats], his first major league team.

Clemens’ agent, Randy Hendricks, says that if the Rocket pitches, he probably wouldn’t start his season until May or June.

Pettitte has played golf with Clemens in recent weeks. He wouldn’t say exactly what his buddy told him, but he dropped a few hints.

"After speaking with him, it sounds like that he probably wants to try to pitch. It’s amazing to me that he still wants to pitch, but he does," Pettitte said, laughing. "He’s like he’s 20. So he’s just got an unbelievable amount of energy."

Hendricks also thinks the 44-year-old right-hander will put off retirement once again.

"I think it is more than 50-50 that Roger will play in 2007, but for a shortened season," Hendricks said in a Q&A session Wednesday on the Houston Chronicle’s Web site. "As I said, it will be for the Astros, Red Sox or Yankees. I don’t think any team is really ahead.

"Obviously, Houston has the home-field advantage. One of the nice things during Roger’s time playing for Houston has been how outstanding the fans have been. One of the reasons he decided to play for the Astros was the large number of Houston fans who asked him to do so."

It’s possible Clemens will wait to see what kind of starts the three teams get off to before making his decision. Cashman said that if Clemens decides to play, the Yankees would put on a "full-court press."

"I think people presuming or assuming that we’re the lead dog in this race - I just don’t think that that’s fair," Cashman said. "Ultimately, he has a personal choice to make, and only he can make it."

The Red Sox arguably will have the strongest starting rotation in the American League heading into spring training, but that will not preclude them from pursuing Roger Clemens one more time.

Owner John W. Henry confirmed in a brief e-mail yesterday that the team intends to make another attempt to sign the seven-time Cy Young Award winner, potentially boosting a rotation that already includes Curt Schilling, Jonathan Papelbon, Tim Wakefield, Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Jon Lester. Clemens’ agent, Randy Hendricks, said last week that his client was leaning toward playing another partial season after going 7-6 with a 2.30 ERA in 19 starts for the Houston Astros last season.

The 11-time all-star, who has repeatedly put off retirement over recent years, was so battered and sore at the end of Houston’s 2005 National League championship season that he decided to conserve energy last year by working out a deal with the Astros that didn’t result in his activation until June 22. The tactic worked, as Clemens posted ERAs of 2.00, 2.54 and 2.33 in his three full months. The 44-year-old right-hander allowed one or no earned runs in seven of his last eight outings.

The Sox pursued Clemens last offseason, presenting him with a film of his accomplishments with the ballclub that was said to have moved him to the brink of tears, forcing him to seriously consider returning to his original franchise before re-upping with his hometown Astros. Over the weekend, Clemens told Houston reporters that he hasn’t made up his mind if he will play again in 2007, but indicated that the scenario is similar to last year at this time.

“I don’t think it’s any different than last year,” Clemens told MLB.com. “Three teams are always players in this situation: my hometown team, Boston and the Yankees.

“I’m really not any closer to making a decision.”

Clemens said that a concern right now is that he’s not as close to being in playing shape as he was one year ago, because he is not preparing for participation in the World Baseball Classic.

The Yankees are expected to make an all-out effort to re-sign Clemens, who played for them from 1999-2003, after recently trading Randy Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks. New York signed Clemens’ closest friend, Andy Pettitte, to a one-year, $16-million contract Dec. 21 and the left-hander said that he hopes to lure the 348-game winner to the Bronx to join him.

Chopped husband scattered around Tokyo

A woman has confessed to bludgeoning her husband with a wine bottle, sawing the corpse in pieces and dumping his body parts around Tokyo, police and news reports said Thursday.

The arrest of 32-year-old Kaori Mihashi late Wednesday capped a grisly murder mystery that began when a man's torso was found in a garbage bag on a street in downtown Tokyo in December.

The man's legs were found in late December at a separate location in the city, and his head was discovered in a suburban park on Wednesday, a Metropolitan Police official said on condition of anonymity.

The man was identified as Mihashi's husband, Yusuke Mihashi, 30, the police said. His arms were still missing.

The woman confessed to killing her husband, dismembering him with a saw and dumping the body parts, but so far has only been arrested on charges of abandoning a corpse, the police official said.

Kyodo News agency said that the woman told investigators she killed her husband by bludgeoning him on the head with a wine bottle while he was sleeping on December 12.

The woman told them that the husband had physically and emotionally abused her, Kyodo said.

Roger Clemens is no closer to a decision on whether he will pitch in 2007, but the seven-time Cy Young Award winner said on Saturday if he does return, he will be behind last season's timetable.
Last year, Clemens participated for the U.S. team in the World Baseball Classic in March and returned to the Astros on June 22.

After the WBC, Clemens spent time working out with his son Koby, a third baseman in the Astros organization, when Koby returned to Houston for injury rehab. With no Spring Training, the added baseball workouts for the WBC and with his son helped Clemens return to the mound after making just three Minor League starts.

"Right now, I'm nowhere close, I think I'll have to do the same thing probably even more than last time. Last year, I had the World games and working with Koby when he was injured put me ahead of pace," Clemens said following a news conference on Saturday at the George R. Brown Convention Center, where the seven-time Cy Young Award winner was attending an exposition involving his partnership with Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. "It's going to be more difficult this year."

Clemens said he hasn't made up his mind about where he would pitch, should he decide to delay retirement another season. He reiterated previous comments that should he return there are only three teams he would consider.

"I don't think it's any different than last year," Clemens said. "Three teams are always players in this situation, my hometown team, Boston and the Yankees. I'm really not any closer to making a decision."

Clemens, 44, went 7-6 with a 2.30 ERA in 19 starts for Houston last season. The 11-time All-Star ranks eighth on the MLB career wins list with 348.
