Horror injury made me a better person

Horror injury made me a better person

EVEN football stars have their heroes.

Ask Alan Smith, capped 19 times by England, and instantly he will pick MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo.

The Spanish star was thrown off his bike in practice for the Chinese GP in 2008.

Lorenzo chipped a bone and snapped ligaments in his left ankle, fractured a bone in his right... . but STILL raced the next day, finishing fourth.

No wonder Smith admires him.

The former Manchester United ace had his left leg broken and left ankle dislocated when he blocked a free-kick from Liverpool’s John Arne Riise with just a minute left of an FA Cup game at Anfield in February 2006.

The injury, which United boss Alex Ferguson called the worst he had ever seen, sidelined Smith for 13 months. And he had only come on as a sub 13 minutes earlier.

Smith will not be part of tomorrow’s Premier League clash at Anfield between United and Liverpool. Today he will be in the Milton Keynes Dons squad for their League One trip to Bury.

Yet tomorrow’s fixture rekindles memories of that fateful day 6½ years ago.

He said: “It was so strange because it was so innocuous. I jumped to block the free-kick and my left foot just got caught in the ground, dislocating my ankle and breaking my leg.

“I looked down in amazement at my ankle, thinking ‘How has that happened?’ I knew it was bad straight away.”

In his hospital bed, Smith was told he would never be the same player again.

He added: “Sir Alex and my parents were with me when the surgeon told me if I could continue playing football I’d have done well. But to play at Premier level would be touch and go.

“As soon as he said that I thought ‘Let’s get my head on and prove him wrong’.

“Some people are told they will never walk again and manage to do it. It wasn’t a case of giving up for me. For 13 months I worked every day, trying to get back to some sort of level.

“So, for me, the biggest achievement of my career has been playing again.

“It has made me a better person. It made me realise how much I do love football.

“It made me appreciate everything because it could be taken away from you just like that.

“Football has been my life. You leave school at 16 and it’s all you know. You go into training and see all your mates. It’s like an extension of school without doing the writing.

“It made me realise there is an outside world. For months, every other Saturday afternoon, when we didn’t have a home game, I began doing other things.

“I started playing golf and getting involved in different sides of life. I love my bikes, watching my dad still compete in motocross. But football is where my main love lies.

“The injury made me grow up a bit. A lot of times you think you’re invincible. Then something like that happens and you miss it for the best part of two years.

“My first major game back was against Roma in April 2007. We won 7-1 in what Sir Alex described as the best Manchester United performance since he had been manager. To be part of that was something special.

“When I was injured, I never thought I’d come back, score a goal and beat Roma 7-1. Stuff like that doesn’t go through your head.

“But I had been determined to put myself in a position where that was possible.

“I got to play in the six remaining games in the league as we won the title. I had a massive high but knew I’d probably be unable to sustain that level.”

As usual, Smith was targeted by abuse from opposing fans.

He admitted: “Everyone hates me wherever I go and I like that. I think they just wish I was playing for them. It inspires me to do even better when there is some animosity.”

Smith’s United career ended in August 2007. A £5million transfer took him to Newcastle where, in injured Nicky Butt’s absence, he captained the Toon to the Championship title.

But when Alan Pardew replaced Chris Hughton, Smith found even a place on the bench hard to come by.

He joined the Dons on loan for the second half of last season, helping them into the play-off semi-finals against Huddersfield.

The Dons lost out and Smith was attacked by celebrating Town fans on the pitch after the away leg’s final whistle.

Dons boss Karl Robinson and his touchline staff ran into the mob to protect him. It reinforced the player’s view that here was a club which wanted him.

He declared: “The minute I walked through the door at MK, it just felt right. You know when people care about you and you care about them.”

Smith would like nothing better than MK pulling a Cup-tie at Liverpool for his Scouse gaffer.

He said: “It would be a dream draw for him and the Liverpool lads here.

“I’ve usually done well at Anfield. I scored my first Premier goal there and my 50th career goal. Then, of course, the injury — a case of third time unlucky!”

前身はプレミアリーグ在籍やFAカップ優勝経験を持つ、ウィンブルドンFC(1889年創設、ロンドンを本拠地にしていた)。

Huddersfield 1 MK Dons 1

DEAN LEWINGTON insists Alan Smith is no 'Big-time Charlie' despite his drop two divisions into League One.

Smith — a Premier League winner with Manchester United and a Champions League semi-finalist with Leeds — is on loan at MK Dons from Newcastle until the end of the season.

And the former England ace, 31, lasted an hour on his first start since breaking an ankle back in January last year.

Eyebrows were raised when Smith dropped down to join the Dons' promotion push but skipper Lewington said the £60,000-a-week star is just one of the lads.

He said: "Alan has fitted in really well. Sometimes you worry with such a big name but he is a down-to-earth bloke with no airs or graces.

"He just needs a few more games to sharpen him up and we'll have one hell of a player on our hands."

Smith, who has been handed an attacking midfield role by boss Karl Robinson, gave an energetic display, always seeking the ball and shouting encouragement to his team-mates.

He showed he still had a rash side when he lunged in on Jamie McCombe and was booked.

Robinson added: "Alan showed how good he is and he will only get better. Sixty-five minutes was his limit but he loved it out there.

"He reverted to being a holding midfielder at Newcastle but he'd play goalkeeper or left-back just to be in the team. I want to give him the freedom to unlock defences."

McCombe gave Huddersfield the lead in first-half stoppage time when he headed home a curling cross from Kallum Higginbotham.

Town were rocked when Stephen Gleeson's free-kick drifted over everyone, including goalkeeper Ian Bennett, to level on 62 minutes.

Centre-back McCombe said: "We wanted three points but we have gone 54 matches and only lost two — plenty of teams would take that."
