米国の小説The Great Gatsbyを読んでいます。　Daisyの夫、Tomの不倫相手、Myrtle Wilson、その夫、George Wilsonが言う台詞に覚えたい表現がありました。
'I just got <B>wised up to</B> something funny the last two days,' remarked Wilson. 'That's why I want to get away. That's why I been bothering you about the car.'
"<B>wised up</B>" だと利口になった感じですが、ここではそう言う意味ではないのは後に "to something funny" があるので分かります。辞書を見ます。

なるほど、利口になるのとはニュアンスが違いますが、気が付くと言う意味があるのですね。少し利口になりました。(ほんとかしら?)
