リーダーズダイジェスト5月号に "Do You Want to Live Forever?" と題して各国のアンケート結果を紹介していました。　"No Thanks" と答えた方が最も多い国は Russiaで、 "Live Forever" に "Yes" としたロシア人の割合はたったの36% でした。　"Live Forever" に "Yes" と答えた割合が最も多かったのはブラジルで72%となっていました。　次ぎの文はそのブラジルについてですが覚えたい単語・表現がありました。

ＲＤの記事で言う "trend" は "Most respondents to our latest global survey are just fine with their limited shelf life here on earth. Not even the younger crowd consistently chooses immortality." だったそうです。　何故か日本はＲＤの統計にはありませんが（ＲＤ日本語版がないので当然か？）、調査をしたらどんな答えがでるのでしょうか？

balk at

The Japan Times Online, July 9の記事からの抜粋です。
Moms balk at high cost of new safety-approved bikes
Even though a mother of two in Ota Ward, Tokyo, is well aware of a new regulation introduced July 1 that only allows an adult and two small children to ride a bicycle if it is equipped with sufficient safety features, she intends to continue using her unauthorized bike.

タイトル行の "balk" の単語は野球のボークとか「妨害する」などの意味が思い浮かびますが、ここでの意味はちょっと違うようです。　記事の本文を読むと母親達は、新しい安全性の高い自転車を価格が高いので買わないことが分かります。　すると "balk" の意味は「躊躇する」とか「拒否する」と言うような意味になりますが、辞書で確認します。

引用文での "balk" の意味は「躊躇する」より、価格が高いのが障害となり、法に違反していても買わない、「拒否する」に近いようです。

repute and borer

リーダーズダイジェスト5月号に "COMPANIONS HELP EACH OTHER GROW" と題した記事、"Gardeners have been using the principles of companion planting for decades to get the best results from their patch."、の中の "Garlic" についての文に知らない単語が二つもありました。
Garlic - is reputed to repel borers if planted around a tree as well as mites and other sap suckers.
"reputed" と "borers" が意味に自信を持てない単語です。"reputed" は "reputation" の動詞形のように見えますがどうでしょうか？

やはり "reputation" の動詞形ですね。　こんな事も知らなかったなんてこれでは何時まで経っても英語の初心者ですね。　さて、めげないで "borers" も調べましょう。
"borers" は文脈からすると何かの害虫の一種のようですが虫としては私は全く知らない虫です。

なるほど、"bore" には穴/穴を開けるの意味があるのですね。　ところで "mollusk " は初めて見る単語ではないのですが忘れたので辞書を見ます。

今の仕事はストレスがほとんどないのは良いのですが賃金がとても低いのでこんなジョークは身につまされます。

The Japan Times Online, June 27のキャプションに次ぎの文がありました。
Drawing a bead on illegal residents
"bead" の単語は数珠の意味しか頭に浮かんで来ません。　ニュース記事の場合には先を読んで行くと意味が分かる場合が多いので記事の本文を読みます。
With bills to revise the immigration law expected to clear the current Diet session, the Immigration Bureau aims to get a clearer picture of the facts surrounding foreigners who overstay their visas, a bureau official said.
本文でキャプションの "illegal residents" に相当するのは "foreigners who overstay their visas" で、それに対する/目的とする動詞は "aim" ですが、 "Drawing a bead" にその意味があるのでしょうか？　辞書を引きます。

なるほど　"bead on a revolver" を知っていれば分かる表現ですが、日本は幸いな事に銃社会では無いので知りませんでした。（映画好きは知っているのでしょうね。）

tee

リーダーズダイジェスト5月号にあった "IN THE BLACK ROCK TAVERN" と題された詩の冒頭の文句です。
The large man in the Budweiser tee with serpents twining on his arms has leukemia.
"tee" と言うとゴルフの "tee" しか思い浮かべません。　一瞬Budweiser の宣伝用の "tee" を想像したのですが、"man in the..." なのであり得ません。　そこで思考は停止したので辞書です。

なーんだ、と言う結果です。　やはり私は想像力に欠けていますね。
この原稿を書いた数日後に地下鉄の電車内に貼ってあったマクドナルドの宣伝に、「T」が当たる/貰える？云々とありました。　若い人なら "T-shirt" と言わなくても "T" でも "tee" でも "T-shirt" の事だと分かるのですね。

chequered/checkered

"The English Language" の中の英語のスペリングについて書かれた個所から引用します。
Because of the complex history of the English language, which we discuss in Part III, English spelling is a curious mixture of different influence. It is surprising, indeed, that with such a chequered history so much regularity should have been retained.
"chequered" は米国なら "checkered" と綴られる単語と思いますが、原形の "chequere/checker" の動詞の意味を辞書で見ます。

この意味なら名詞の用法と同じように知っていましたが、引用文の意味には直接当てはまらないので更に別の辞書を見ます。

なるほど、この意味で使われていたのですね。

numbers person

これもリーダーズダイジェストの "BOUNCE BACK CHRONICLES" にあった文です。
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic - you're a born artist, sportman, or numbers person.
この "numbers person" が何だかピンとこないので辞書を見ます。　人を意味する次ぎの例がありました。
・Dictionary.com: Informal. person; individual: the attractive number standing at the bar.
・American Herritage Dictionary: Slang A person or thing singled out for a particular characteristic: a crafty number.
しかし、引用文での意味ではなさそうです。　色々辞書を見ましたがこれだと言う用法は見つからず、しかたなくGoogleで "numbers person" の例を検索すると、例は幾らでもありました。　ここでは２例を引用します。
・Born and raised in New York, Parrs graduated from Ivy League member Brown University with a bachelor's degree in history. Still, Parrs is a numbers person.
"Numbers talk to me. Numbers tell me a story," she says. "I am naturally good at numbers. I was rotten in languages."
・When Cassie Kearney graduated with a business degree from Boston College, she considered herself a numbers person through and through.

"numbers person" はもちろん数字に強い人で、会計、財務などの分野で成功したCFOなどを形容するのにピッタリな言葉のようです。　辞書に例が載っていませんが、恐らく最近の数十年の間に米国で使われ始めた表現なのでしょう。 私は国語や英語より理数の科目が得意で電子工学を学んだのですが、残念ながらお金に関係する方の数字は苦手なので "numbers person" には全く縁がありませんでしたが、やり直せるなら "numbers person" になって見たい。

test waters

"tests waters" が気になりますので本文を読んでみます。
Internal affairs minister Tsutomu Sato suggested Tuesday he may review the four-way split of Japan Post services.
となると "tests waters" は "review" と同じ様な意味かなと思ったところで２年ちょっと前にこの表現を調べた事をおもいだしました(http://blog.alc.co.jp/blog/3302827/archive/2007/4/18)。
２年前は英英辞書は使っていなかったので今回は英英辞書で "test waters" を調べなおします。
Merriam-Webster:　test the waters also test the water : to make a preliminary test or survey (as of reaction or interest) before embarking on a course of action
Cambridge Idiom Dictionary: to try something new We are testing the waters to see if online ads increase sales.
Wiktionary: (idiomatic) To explore or probe, as before making a commitment.
Taking classes in a subject is a good way to test the waters and explore a potential career.
前回は英和辞書で「成り行き/様子を見る」とだけ調べていたのですが、上の英英辞書の説明にあるように、表現には "test" があることから "make a preliminary test" あるいは　"explore or probe" のように「成り行き/様子を見る」よりも能動的な（事前に）調べるとか探るのような意味を持っている、あるいはその様な用法が多いようだ。

knock/throw you for a loop

リーダーズダイジェスト5月号の "BOUNCE BACK CHRONICLES" と題した記事にあった表現です。
Sometimes life throws you a curveball, hands you a lemon, or knocks you for a loop."knocks you for a loop" の意味が分かりませんが、何か慣用句の様な気がします。
最初に "knock" で辞書を引きました。
・Cambridge Idiom Dictionary: if something that happens knocks you for a loop, it upsets or confuses you because you do not expect it He knocked me for a loop when he said he was quitting his job.
・McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs:
1. Fig. to strike someone hard. You really knocked me for a loop. I hope that was an accident. DI was really knocked for a loop by the falling branch.
2. and throw someone for a loop Fig. to confuse or shock someone. (This is more severe and upsetting than throw someone a curve.) When Bill heard the news, it threw him for a loop. The manager knocked Bob for a loop by firing him on the spot.
