It always irked my single mother that her grocery store didn't carry eggs in packages of six--just by the dozen. Then one day, her wish came true. She walked into the grocery and found fresh eggs in cartons of six.

辞書に "throw in two cents" の項目は見当たりませんでしたが、 "put in two cents" での説明が次の辞書にありました。

"My two cents" ("my 2¢") and its longer version "put my two cents in" is an American idiomatic expression, taken from the original English idiom "to put in my two-penny worth" or "my two cents". It is used to preface a tentative statement of one’s opinion. By deprecating the opinion to follow—suggesting its value is only two cents, a very small amount—the user of the phrase, showing politeness and humility, hopes to lessen the impact of a possibly contentious statement. 新型コロナの影響により図書館が長い間利用できない期間があったので、２０年以上前に買ってほとんど読まなかった 529ページもある 'Merriam-Webster's Vocabulary Builder' を読み始めました。
読んで見ると結構興味が湧く内容で語彙を増やすには役に立ちそうです。
iridescentは知っている単語ですが、その説明文に出てきた "play" が気になりました。
iridescent: Having a glowing, rainbowlike play of color that seems to change as the light shifts
Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow, took messages from Mount Olympus to earth, and from gods to mortals or other gods, using the rainbow as her stair way.
Iridescence is thus the glowing, shifting, colorful quality of a rainbow, also seen in an opal, a light oil slick, a butterfly wing, or the mother-of-pearl that lines an oyster shell.
"play" を辞書で確認します。

antifa

The Japan Times Online June 8, 2020の記事 'As Trump blames antifa for unrest, protest records offer scant evidence' に出てきた "antifa" が分かりませんが、記事の本文を読むと "antifa" を説明する箇所がありました。。

The president has tried to portray the protesters and looters with a broad brush as “radical-left, bad people,” ominously invoking the name “antifa,” an umbrella term for leftist militants bound more by belief than organizational structure. Trump tweeted last Sunday that he planned to designate antifa as a terrorist organization.
トランプ大統領は "antifa" を "radical-left" の意味で使っているようです。
辞書での "antifa" の説明を見ます。

この辞書にはもう一つ面白いおまけの次の例文がついていました。

どうやら "antifa" はファッシズムに対する反動、 "anti-fascist movement" に対する反動勢力ですが、"radical-left" でもあり "radical-right" でもある。また、ファシストと戦う人たちでもあり、自身がファシストでもある、いずれにせよ厄介な連中を指すようだ。
それにしてもトランプ氏が米国の大統領を続ける限り、米国の分断は直ることは無いどころか、その影響で世界もその分断に巻き込まれそうだ。

in the hurt locker

Reader's Digest 4月号の記事 'Why Are Military Families on Food Stamps' からの引用です。
"I found it embarrassing," she admits. "I felt like, you should be able to provide for your family and not lean on anybody else. That's what you're supposed to do as an adult." It was especially difficult when she was a junior sailor and the pay was lower. "If you didn't have enough money saved up, you were definitely in the hurt locker."
最後に出てきた "in the hurt locker" は文脈からすると、生活の困窮していることを意味していますが、辞書にこの表現の説明があるでしょうか？
Wiktionaryに次の説明がありました。

スラングとなると次のの辞書ですね。

"hurt locker”は元々軍人のスラングですが、Mark Boal原作の映画、The Hurt Locker(2008年)、で一般にも使われるようになった様だ。

rolling in dough

"dough" はお金の意味もあることは以前（9/30/2015）取り上げたので "rolling in dough" はお金がどんどん入るイメージです。　"roll/rolling in dough" で辞書に説明があるか見ます。

smarty-pants

Reader's Digest 4月号の記事 'The Food on your Plate' からの引用です。
You also decoded the mystery of our juice. Our fresh-squeezd nectar actually becomes undrinkably bitter in less than a day's time. This was a persistent problem until World War II. Then some smarty-pants Army scientists, keen to protect troops from scurvy, offered a contract to anyone who made a portable, potable frozen orange juice rich in vatamin C.
"smarty-pants" は賢い人を連想しますが、辞書で確認します。

consumed

Reader's Digest 4月号の記事 'Jonbenet Ramsey Did she know her murderer?' からの引用です。
Patsy had killed her daughter in a fit of rage over some kind of imperfection, such as wetting the bed. Maybe JonBenet's nine-year-old brother, Burke, was consumed by jealousy of his beautiful sister. Maybe John had been abusing his daughter in some way.
記事を読んでいて思い出しました、日本でも当時（１９９６年）新聞やTVの話題になった美少女（６歳）の迷宮入り殺人事件の話題ですね。
最後の文中の "was consumed by" の "consume" は以前（8/17/2016）に取り上げた "consumed with" と同じですね。
今回は前回引用しなかった次の辞書の説明を引用します。
・Macmillan Dictionary: to take all of your attention so that you cannot think of anything else: be consumed with/by something: I was consumed with curiosity about my new neighbor.
