次ぎの文中に携帯電子辞書には出ていない単語があったので後で調べるために文だけメモしました。
If you really want to support a charity, do it through their website, not a chugger.

Paid "charity" street worker (read: student) who has been trained to believe that they are carrying out a worthy task, improving peoples' lives by conning Joe Public out of their money for this week's Good Cause. Usually an agency worker where the agency takes a hefty cut of the hourly rate that the charity in question has paid for, whilst at the same time increasing profits by selling on details of those foolish enough to actually stop and sign up to said Good Cause.

A street fundraiser is a person who collects donations on behalf of a charity. They may be a paid employee of the charity (or a company working on behalf of the charity), or they may be a volunteer .
Paid street fundraisers are sometimes known as chuggers because occasionally fundraising is viewed as aggressive or invasive (a portmanteau of "charity" and "mugger"). It became popular as a way of referring to street fundraisers after several articles appeared in British newspapers
"chuggers"は"smog" の様にいわゆる鞄語（例 "smoke + fog"）でイギリス生まれの新語でした。

figment

何に書いてあったのかメモはしませんでしたが興味を引く単語に会いました。 I thought I saw someone standing in the shadows, but it was just a figment of my imagination.

figment は「作り事」、「空想事」と辞書に出ていますが、Web上のオンライン辞書では文例が幾つもありました。 The traveler rubbed his eyes, unsure if the distant campfire was merely a figment of his imagination. (fabrication, illusion) Some movies temporarily portray figments of character's imaginations as reality. (fancy, creation) Was that a figment, or did I just see my estranged brother. (chimera, illusion) Either that was a very real-to-life figment, or I just saw a bald eagle flying outside our window. (fabrication, illusion) Wikipediaにも次ぎのような説明がありました。 Figment, a small purple dragon, occasionally seen sporting a yellow sweater, is the mascot of the Imagination! pavilion at the Epcot theme park at Walt Disney World Resort. He is extensively seen in Epcot merchandise. He first appeared in March 1981 in the pavilion's Journey Into Imagination dark ride, in which Dreamfinder, a jolly wizard-like scientist, created him and taught him how to use his imagination. Figment is meant to be the literal embodiment of the phrase "figment of the imagination". He is composed of various elements Dreamfinder found in his travels including two tiny wings, large yellow eyes, the horns of a steer (or dilemma, according to a 1983 appearance on the Today Show), a crocodile's snout, and the childish delight found at a birthday party. Figment is described in detail in the Dreamfinder's song "One Little Spark" (by the Sherman Brothers). Dreamfinder introduces him: "Two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a lovable fellow. From head to tail, he's royal purple pigment, and there, voila, you've got a Figment."

フロリダのDisney Worldに行ったのは二十年以上前になるので上記のFigmentの事は全く記憶にありません。記憶にあるのはDisney World内の日本料理店には池があり錦鯉が泳いでいたことを憶えている位です。

McGuffin

VocabularyのメルマガArcaMaxでMcGuffinと言う興味深い言葉の紹介がありました。
McGuffin muh-GUF-in (noun) - A device that helps propel the plot in a story but is of little importance in itself.
"The book's problem seems to be that the main thrust of the plot features a McGuffin so gnarled and elaborate as to throw the novel out of whack, even as it propels things forward."
Coined by film director Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980).
つまり、「物語、映画などで筋の展開に効果を発揮する一工夫。ストリー全体の中ではそれ自体はたいして重要ではない。米国の映画監督アルフレッド・ヒッチコック(Alfred Hitchcock, 1899-1980)による造語。」と英辞郎の説明にもあるので、多分映画通には常識の言葉なのでしょう。
ArcaMaxの説明は次にように続きます。
A McGuffin could be a person, an object, or an event that characters of a story are interested in but that, intrinsically, is of little concern. For example, in Hitchcock's movie North by Northwest, thugs are on the look out for a character named George Kaplan. Roger Thornhill, an ad executive, gets mistaken for Kaplan and so he is chased instead. Meanwhile Thornhill himself tries to find Kaplan who doesn't even exist.

Hitchcock explained the term in a 1939 lecture at Columbia University: "In regard to the tune, we have a name in the studio, and we call it the 'MacGuffin'. It is the mechanical element that usually crops up in any story. In crook stories it is always the necklace and in spy stories it is always the papers. We just try to be a little more original." (quoted from the OED)

Hitchcock borrowed it from a shaggy-dog story where a train passenger is carrying a large odd-shaped package. The passenger calls it a MacGuffin and explains to the curious fellow passengers that it's a device used to catch lions in Scottish Highlands. When they protest that there are no lions in the Highlands, he simply replies, "Well, then this can't be a MacGuffin."

私は映画は余り見ないので良く知りませんが、映画に関する用語は前に話題にしたbodice rippers、film noirの他にも色々ありそうです。

aphorism

"God is either cruel or incompetent" と言ったのは俳優で映画監督でもあるウッディ・アレンで、この様な警句・金言・格言は英語で "aphorism" と言い "aphorism" を簡単に定義すると "Aphorism is a tersely phrased statement of a truth or opinion." だそうです。英国の作家であるJames Gearyと言う方が書いた "Geary's Guide to the World's Greatest Aphorists" の紹介記事を最近読みました。この本の特色はそれぞれの名文句を発した人物のプロフィールも備えているところにあるそうです。　冒頭に書いた "aphorism" も紹介文にあったものですが、その他に私が気に入った２点の "aphorism" を下記に紹介します。
"Common sense is not so common." by Voltaire
"Prepare for the worst; expect the best; and take what comes."
いずれも至言ですね。私もこの本を買って読みたくなりましたが、買ったままで読んでいない、読み終えていない英語の本が手元に４～５冊はあるのを思い出し、買うのを思い留めました。

rendering and perspective

１０年以上前の事ですが、CAD(Computer Aided Design）そのものではないのですがCADに若干関わるソフトウェアを販売する仕事をしていました。CAD部隊の人達が使う専門用語にレンダーリング(rendering)というのがありなんの事が気になっていたのですが分からないままでした。再就職先の新しい仕事、ソフトウェアによる画像分析でもレンダーリングの言葉が出てきたので調べて見ました。

上の三つの辞書の説明にある言葉 "perspective" は「遠近法」のことで、レオナルド・ダ・ビンチが初めて遠近法を使って書いた画家と聞いた記憶があります。（BBCの地球伝説でそう言っていたと思うが記憶力は自信がないので保証はしません。）
画像分析のソフトウェアでは幾つかの平面画像から３次元の立体画像を作成できますが、その事をrenderingと言うようです。

circadian rhythm

「第三の脳」の中にほんの少しですが英単語が併記されていました。その一つに circadian rhythm（生物がもつ１日単位のリズム）がありました。一応 "circadian" を辞書で確認すると、「２４時間周期の」とあり、成句として "circadian rhythm" と共に "circadian clock"（体内時計）が載っていました。　覚えておいて良い単語だと思いました。

I've Got You Under My Skin

先週の金・土曜日と新年会が続き、昨日は朝から卓球の試合（もちろん全日本の大会ではありません）がありダブルスとシングルの両方に参加したので１２試合も戦ったのでブログの更新は２日も休みました。今週と来週まで新年のスケジュールがまだあるのでまたブログの更新ができない日があるでしょう。ところで本題ですが、「第三の脳」（傳田光洋著・朝日出版社）という本を読みました。目次の前に「皮膚思う故に我あり」と書かれているのですが、最初は何の事か分からず余り気にも留めず読み進んだのですが、「皮膚は未知の思考回路」、「表皮は電気システム」（表皮細胞は電波を発信している、脳と表皮は生まれが同じ）、「皮膚は第三の脳である」、「皮膚がつくるヒトの心」と読み進むと、大概の男性がそうだと思うが、これまで余り気にも留めてこなかった皮膚が人間の身体にとって非常に重要であり、考える葦だったのだと教えてくれました。皆様にも是非一読をお薦めします。
ところで皮膚と言うと私が思い浮かべる文句は "I've Got You Under My Skin" です。フランク・シナトラが歌って有名になったコールポーターのジャズの名曲ですが、この "I've Got You Under My Skin" の意味がさっぱり分からず長い間疑問でした。そこである時意味を調べてみました。
辞書で調べると

get under one's skin, Slang.
a. to irritate; bother: His laugh really gets under my skin.

と載っていました。
これで「第三の脳」で言っていることが益々納得できる気がします。

patent defect

残念な事に原文をメモしていないのですが、文中に "patent defect" とあり、patent ときたら特許しか知らないので "patent defect" の意味が分からず、あとで調べようと"patent defect" とだけメモした紙が出てきました。そこで調べると "patent defect" は「明白な欠陥」"an obvious flaw in a product or a document (such as leaving out the property description in a deed)." の事で、反語は「隠れた欠陥/瑕疵」latent defect(A flaw or other imperfection in any article which is discovered after delivery; usually, latent defects are inherent weaknesses which normally are not detected by examination or routine tests, but which are present at time of manufacture and are aggravated by use.) となります。 以前法務の仕事を４年ほどしていて契約書はうんざりするほど読みましたので当時は「瑕疵・瑕疵担保」の単語を目にしない日はなかったと言っても過言ではありませんが、英文の契約書で "patent defect" の表現を見たことはありませんでした。 知っているつもりの単語"patent"にも"latent meaning"があると言うことでした。

zip-line

Kelly Clerksonと言う米国のアイドルとのインタビュー記事に "（子供の頃）We built tree houses with zip lines." とありましたが、このzip linesがどんなものか分かりません。 "zip" を辞書で調べても適当な意味はどの辞書にも出ていませんでした。"Onelook" で zip line を検索したら、Wikipediaだけが引っ掛かりました。Wikipedia によると "A zip-line (also known as a flying fox, zip wire, aerial runway, death slide or tyrolean crossing) consists of a pulley suspended on a cable mounted on an incline. They are designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to traverse from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable, usually made of stainless steel, by holding on or attaching to the freely moving pulley." とありました。　なるほど、日本では庭が狭いのでこのような遊びは中々できませんが、公園などではここに書かれているようなzip linesを見かけることがありますね。Wikipediaには写真も載っているのでzip linesのイメージがわかない方はそちらを見ると一目瞭然です。

Bonin Islands

昨年60Vのプラズマテレビを購入してからテレビを見る時間が増えました。世界遺産とか世界旅行、大自然を
テーマとする番組を見ることが多いのですが大自然の景色を大画面のハイビジョン放送で見るのは素晴らしいものです。先日、１１月２４日に放映されたサイエンスゼロという番組の再放送を録画で見ましたが非常に興味深い番組でした。小笠原よりさらに南にある無人島、南硫黄島を２５年ぶりに調査した話ですが、この島は有史以来の無人島で、大陸や人の住んでいる小笠原からも遠く離れているためにネズミも含め哺乳類は全く生息しておらず、南硫黄島にしかいない昆虫とか、カタツムリがどこからどのようにして来たのかなど、島の動植物の話はダーウィンがガラパゴス島を調査した話を思い起こせるものでした。
ところで番組の中で小笠原諸島と南硫黄島を示す地図がほんの一寸だけ示された時に小笠原諸島の英語名が "Ogasaware Islands" ではなく "Bonin Islands" と書かれていたのに気が付きましたが、これは数年前にASJのレクチャーで小笠原の言語の変遷についての話を聴いたことがあるからです。小笠原に日本人が定植するようになったのは江戸時代ですが、日本人が定植する前に欧米人とポリネシアからの人々が既に住んでいたそうです。幕府は小笠原を「無人島（ぶにんしま）」と名付けたのですが、それがなまって欧米では小笠原を "Bonin Islands" とよぶようになった聴きました。
南硫黄島は特別な許可がないと行けない島ですが、小笠原にはいつか行って見たいですね。
