My scale system secrets. In the next months I would love to share my scale system series with you. They are the simplest, most friendly and helpful scales that have accompanied me all my life.
Our instrument is almost 10 cms bigger than a violin. We need solid techniques to maintain flexibility of the fingers, since we have to carry a heavy viola and bow. I believe that the following techniques serve this purpose.
Today I start with Tibor Varga’s 3 octaves major scales. These scales seem to sound violinistic, but how it functions on the viola is quite amazing. You could learn all of the scales in one stretch, which means that you can keep the same shape of the left hand from C major to one octave higher C major. What is important is that from the fourth scale onward, the first note is a second finger (see pictures).
Scales are not dogmatic, they are creative, so have fun!
