There are many Train Otakus in Japan. I used to look down on them just because the way they look is so freaky. They have a back pack and freakin high tech camera, and a notebook (i dont know why, but maybe thwy will write down something important to remember) but actually since i have many chances to take Shinkansen or different kind of trains like JR, Hanshin, Hankyu, Osaka Subway, Kobe subway, Tokyo Odakyu etc... I do have to admit Japanese technology for the trains and railroad is pretty outstanding.
Do you remmeber what Shinkansen used to look like? It was Blue and white, and the head of the cart was kinda round, it actually didnt look like it could go so fast. But now have you seen Hikari railstar? That is cool. Its so sharp and it looks like its going to fly and shoots in the air. Now they even have the female driver (Do you say Driver for the train? i have no idea ++;) and they are all pretty FOR SOME REASON.. haha
well today I heard an interesting story regarding to this JR trains.
Now there are several branches in JR companies
West
East
Tokai
Shikoku
Tohoku
Kyushu
Freigt
the Chinese Charactor for trains/railroad in general is
鉄道, 鉄, tetsu, means steel or iron and 道, dou, means way, street or road.
for many years This companys been around, but since some time they decided to change the FONT of this word 鉄 of the LOGO for JR advertisemnt.
And the reason is...
The charactor tetsu, 鉄 is made of two different charactors.
The left side is 金 kin/kane, means gold or money, 失 shitsu/ushinau, means to lose.
So....
"Lose money"
There is no dought that JRs business wasnt going so well at that time, and someone noticed about this LOGO. Of course if you are writing "Lose money" everywhere in LOGO its a bad luck.
So they made up one new charactor by adjusting 鉄 to 金矢
失 was changed to 矢 the top part is a little different. Can you see the difference?
the new charactor 矢 ya, means Arrow. So its like "Aim for money"!!

but of course they made this Kanji charactor and they cant just do that. So they can only use this in their Logo, and when they want to say something in documents or whatever, then they still have to say
LOSE MONEY
