1. Miami
2. New York
3. Boston
4. Los Angeles
5. Washington, D.C.
6. Phoenix
7. Chicago
8. Sacramento, Calif.
9. Philadelphia
10. San Francisco
11. Houston
12. Atlanta
13. Detroit
14. Minneapolis-St. Paul
15. Baltimore
16. Tampa, Fla.
17. San Diego
18. Cincinnati
19. Cleveland
20. Denver

Towel off in Portland--Aside from rain, a plucky
little Northwestern indie has plenty in store for gays
Despite being a city that's better moisturized than
West Hollywood's Gay Pride parade (expect a daily
rain, mist or spritz), Portland OR, turns it out like
a friendly little Southern town that just happens to
be teeming with gays, lesbians, more lesbians and
totaly cute, arty straight boys.
Don't go looking for a gayborhood though. This place
falls so far left of even San Francisco that its gay
denizens don't feel the need to ghettoize themselves.
However Stark Street and Third Avenue, located within
walking distance of each other, are home to most of
the city's gay bars.
Inside the local favorite Silverado (1217 SW Stark
St.; 503-224-2293, silveradopdx.com), conveniently
abutting a bathhouse, you'll find naked go-go dancing,
cute blue-collar types, collegiate boys, fruit flies
and a few trannies. And you haven't lived till you've
been to Darcelle's (208 NW 3rd Ave.; 503-222-5338), a
drag queen cabaret club hosted by Darcelle herself, a
five-million-year-old drag queen with a sense of humor
as big as the oversized wig on her head.
On Thursday nights, the more alty gays and lesbians
hang together at the Booty party at the divey Porky's
Club (835 N. Lombard; 503-283-9734, bootypdx.com),
dancing to hip hop and mash-ups. The night I visited,
there was a naughty "pageant," starring a wolf (a
skinny bear who looks alternative... I think). Classy?
No. Entertaining? Wildly so.
Easting, however, is something Portland does serve up
with class. Have the best oyster omelet ever at
Portland's favorite breakfast joint, Bijou Cafe (132
SW 3rd Ave.; 503-222-3187). For a low-key, but chic
dining experience treat yourself to the gay-owned
Bluehour (250 NW 13th Ave.; 503-226-3394,
bluehouronline.com). Make a night of it at the hip,
mixed restaurant/lounge, Saucebox (214 SW Broadway;
503-241-3393). And top it off with fantastic cocktails
at the starkly minimalist Mint (816 N. Russell St.;
503-284-5518). All that eating got you tired? Coffee
is more popular than Jesus in this cozy little town,
so you're never more than a sashay away from a
pick-me-up. Stunt your growth at the Pearl Bakery (102
NW 9th Ave.; 503-827-0910, pearlbakery.com) with a
potent cup of joe and a deliciously fresh treat.
Speaking of treats, there's no sales tax in Portalnd!
So, head over to the Pearl District, which used to be
a bunch of old warehouses, but has, of late, turned
into a mecca of shopping and art galleries. Book nerds
will find heaven when they enter Powell's City of
Books (1005 W. Burnside; 503-228-0540, powells.com),
one of the world's largest bookstores.
Ultimately, what you'll find in Portland--aside from
good food, shopping, art and drink--is that this is an
ultra-liberal town. If San Francisco has been ceded to
yuppies and Seattle has turned into Starbucks-town,
rest assured that Portland's still saturated
(literally) with all different walks of life.
