この曲は1928年にシグマンド・ロンバーグが作曲、オスカー・ハマースタイン2世が失恋を悔やむ作詞を付けました。
1930年にはジャック・コンウェイ監督のアメリカ映画『ニュウ・ムーン』においてタンゴ調のリズムで披露されています。
その後、ジャズのスタンダードとしてMJQ (モダン・ジャズ・クァルテット) などが好んで演奏していますが
今日は「ニューヨークのため息」といわれたヘレン・メリルのハスキーな歌声で聞くことにいたします。
