The Spider-Man story is about growing up, and failing, and growing up some more, and failing again, and clawing one’s way back up again. The rudiments of it are the same across close to a dozen movies, several TV shows, a stage musical, and over four thousand comic books: that Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and gained its powers, that he’s sort of a born-loser type, that he feels eternally guilty about his beloved uncle Ben’s death, that there’s a newspaper editor named J. Jonah Jameson who can’t stand Spider-Man but commands Peter to produce photos of him, and so on. Marvel’s recent movies, in which Peter is played by Tom Holland, don’t even bother to explain his origin, because everyone knows it already.

スパイダーマンのストーリーは言ってみれば、成長し、失敗し、さらに成長し、また失敗し、それでも這いつくばって前に進み続けるというものだ。十数本の映画も、何本かのテレビ番組も、1本のミュージカルも、４０００冊を超えるコミックも、基本的に同じだ。ピーター・パーカーは被爆したクモに嚙まれて超人的な力を得たが、ずっとさえないいじめられっ子で、スパイダーマンとして大事なベンおじさんを殺してしまったことを一生悔いながら、スパイダーマンを忌み嫌う新聞編集者J・ジョナ・ジェイムソンにスパイダーマンの写真を撮って来るように命じられる……といったものだ。トム・ホランドがピーター・パーカーを演じる最新のマーベル映画では、ピーターが被爆したクモに嚙まれてスパイダーパワーを得たことには触れていない。誰もがわかっているからだ。

　本書の第6章は膨大なスパイダーマンのコミックを論じているが、大変興味深い。アメコミがどれだけアメリカ小説や映画などの文化全般に影響を与えてきたかわかる。スパイダーマンとアメコミ・ファンはもちろん、アメリカ小説や映画に興味を持っている人たちも驚く内容が満載だ。
