Visiting South Korea
(Nakanishi Yuiri)
Last December, Korean elementary schoolchildren came to my school. Their school is named Mogok Elementary School. They brought a lot of posters and leaflets which emphasize the Pyeongchang Olympic and Paralympic games held in 2018. In my school, they showed a traditional dance of Korea. Korea was not a familiar country for me, but I have started to feel friendly towards Korea.
After they went back to Korea, they sent Christmas cards to classmates and I wrote New Year's cards back to them. This was a very small exchange, but we are still exchanging. The principal of Mogok Elementary invited us to Global Citizenship Education Festival in Korea in June. Soon I ran to become a member, and I was selected as the member.
The Global Citizenship Education Festival was held at the same place where the Korean traditional festival, Gangneung Danoje, a type of Tango Festival is held. The first day, I washed my head with warm water boiled from the leaf of the iris. I also watched a masque play. The second day, more than 300 students from Japan, Korea and China gathered and we thought about citizenship and world peace.
There was also a presentation about international situations, and Olympic games in Asia in English. I also watched music and traditional dances from Japan, Korea and China. High school students presented their opinions in English. The most impressive performance for me was a calligraphy performance. I stood on the stage and wrote my name on the calligraphy work. In addition, I stood there wearing a costume of the character of Toriimoto Junior High School. My costume is a watermelon. So I wore a watermelon costume on the stage in Korea. I was very embarrassed. Soon the master of ceremonies noticed us. They came to us to talk. They gave us some questions in English. My tension got up and up. I couldn’t understand their questions I didn’t understand what they said. My friend helped me. We explained about our costumes. They understood us. They were not difficult questions, but I was unable to talk, which was frustrating. The language that Japanese, Korean and Chinese spoke was English. It’s not only important to study English, but also studying each other’s culture so we can speak easily. I want to study hard and I want to interchange with people from foreign countries with confidence. Thank you.
I learned two things while visiting Korea
(Ido Taichi)
I had the opportunity to go to South Korea in June. The junior high and high school students of three East Asian countries were gathered in Gangneung City, South Korea. We were thinking about peace. I learned two things through this event.
First, even if I feel embarrassed, I should go up to the stage. While I watched a Korean traditional dance, an actor signaled for us to dance together. But I could not dance with him. I had a chance to participate in the festival of dance, which is registered in the cultural heritage of UNESCO, but I did not go up to the stage. I did not have the courage. I was ashamed. I regret that I could not join and dance. If there is another chance, now I think that I must try to challenge unabashedly.
The second is to use English. I interacted with South Korean elementary school students. At that time, I had the chance to ask about their hometown and their self-introduction in English. I could also tell about my hometown and myself in English. But I did not understand this opportunity quickly enough. Though I learn English at school, I did not catch their English well. I learn English and I think I understand English, but I don’t normally have chances to use English like that time. I think that learning at school is not enough. Only remembering is useless. The best way to master English is to use it. From now on, I think we will have more and more chances to interact with foreign people. In order to ensure that we interact with many foreign people easily, I will not only learn English, I will try to use English.
I was interested in the differences in food culture too. I had many questions about Korean dishes. But I was not able to ask the Korean people. After coming back to Japan, I regret that I couldn’t ask my questions.
During this visit to Korea, I learned two things. One is not to be embarrassed, the other is to use English. So in order to not be embarrassed and to use English, I decided to take part in this contest.
Thank you.
