1983年のアーケードゲームマリオブラザーズの成功を受け1985年にファミコンで発売されました。
北米、ヨーロッパではNES（海外版ファミコン）向けにそれぞれ1985年、1987年に発売されました。
プレイヤーはマリオ又はマルチプレイモードではルイージを操作し、宿敵クッパにさらわれたピーチ姫を
取り返すべくキノコ王国を冒険します。サイドスクロールするステージを、敵や穴などの危険を回避し、
キノコやファイヤーフラワー、スターなどのアイテムの助けを借りながら冒険していきます。
このスーパーマリオのゲームは社会現象ともいえる空前の大ブームを巻き起こし、ファミコンゲーム、
ひいては家庭用ゲームの認知度を高めるのにもっとも貢献したゲームでもあり、今でも根強い人気があります。

Players control Mario, or his brother Luigi in the multiplayer mode, as they travel the Mushroom Kingdom
to rescue Princess Toadstool from the antagonist, Bowser. They must traverse side-scrolling stages
while avoiding hazards such as enemies and pits with the aid of power-ups such as the Super Mushroom,
Fire Flower and Starman. This game triggered a phenomenal global boom and made NES and game consoles for family most famous.
