English Journal 11月号にジャーナリストのアラン・ワイズマンとのインタビュー記事に興味を引く単語 "page-turner" が出てきました。　
I wanted to write a page-turner, a bestseller about the environment.
"page-turner" の後にベストセラーとありますのでベストセラーに関係する意味だと思いますが辞書で確認します。

次ぎのWiktionaryにあった説明が一番分かりやすいと思います。

espalier and train

リーダーズダイジェスト10月号に英国の小説に影響を与えたJane Austen's Gardenについての記事がありました。　次ぎの文はその記事からの引用です。
The garden part of the grounds tended to be walled with espaliered fruit trees.
"espaliered" が気になります。
・Dictionary.com: (verb) 1. to train on an espalier.; 2. to furnish with an espalier.
これでは "espalier" の名詞の項を見る必要があります。

1. a trellis or framework on which the trunk and branches of fruit trees or shrubs are trained to grow in one plane.
2. a plant so trained.

"train" は人間以外にも使えるのが面白いですね。　ついでに "train" も辞書を見ます。

こう見てみると２年前に知った "train"（用例： He kept the binoculars trained on the sexy girl） も今回の "train" の用例も、"train" の元々の意味 "to pull or drag in the rear" とつながっているのが見えてきました。

recidivism

The Japan Times Online, Nov.14の記事タイトルにあった単語です。
Recidivism rate at record high in '08
新聞記事の良いことはタイトルだけでは意味が良く分からない場合でも記事を読むと意味が分かってくるように書かれている事です。　記事を読みます。
Crimes committed by repeat offenders accounted for 41.5 percent of offenses last year, a record high, the Justice Ministry said in a white paper on crime released Friday.
この最初の文を読んだだけでタイトルにあった "Recidivism" の意味が分かりました。
でも一応辞書も見てみます。

Dictionary.com: 1. repeated or habitual relapse, as into crime.; 2. Psychiatry. the chronic tendency toward repetition of criminal or antisocial behavior patterns.
"Recidivism" が高い事は社会問題ですが、私の場合は、同じ単語のために再三辞書を引く率が高い事が問題です。

white

次ぎの文も O. Henryの短編 "Hostages to Momus" からです。
After the colonel had finished this, he asked permission to tack on a postscript about how white he was being treated, so the railroad wouldn't feel uneasy in its bosom about him.
"tack on" は９月１６日に取り上げた "tack on" と同じで、ここでは後に "postscript" が続いているので "to add" の意味である事が直ぐに分かります。　今回気になったのは "white"
の方です。　この "white" は色を示してはいないので "white" が他に何か別のの意味があるようです。　辞書を見ます。

辞書の用例にある "White magic" が気になるのでこれも調べます。

邪悪な黒の対照の白ですね。

scrubs

リーダーズダイジェスト10月号のA Dog's Lifeと題された外科の獣医の話です。
"Start a lidocaine drip, give her some intravenous antibiotics, and knock her down. The faster we get her stomach untwisted, the better. I'm changing into scrubs.
この後に手術をする話が出てくるので "scrubs" は外科医の着る手術着かなとも思いますが、一人が着るのに "scrubs" と複数形なのは変な気もします。 辞書で確かめます。

手術着のような意味で使う場合は複数なのですね。　またこの意味は動詞から発生した事も分かりました。
辞書は勉強になりますね。

parasailing

パラセイリングとかパラグライダーに一度は乗って見たいと思いますが...

divvy up

The Japan Times Online, Nov.11の記事タイトルからです。
Flu vaccines scarce, get divvied up
この "divvied" （原形は "divvy"）は良く見かける単語ですが何故か意味を直ぐに忘れる言葉でもあります。　記事を読んでみます。
Vaccinations for swine flu started Nov. 2 for pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses in some prefectures, but many medical institutions are still struggling to keep ample stocks to inoculate their staff, who are the most prone to be exposed to the H1N1 virus.
新型インフルエンザ用のワクチンが足りない話ですね。 "divvy" を辞書で確認します。
Dictionary.com: to divide; distribute (often fol. by up): The thieves divvied up the loot.
Cambridge Dictionary of American English: to divide (something) into parts or shares; They finally decided how to divvy up the money.
あれっ、よく見ると "divvy" は "divide" と似てますね。　もしかして親戚？　そこで語源辞典で調べると、
Online Etymology Dictionary: divvy; 1872, probably a slang alteration of divide.
そうか、これでやっと "divvy" が覚えられそうです。

panic

今日もＲＤの単語クイズ、Word Powerの続きです。私が興味を持ったもう一つの単語は "panic" です。　では "panic" の意味は次ぎのどれでしょうか？
A: racoon-like animal
B: kind of grass
C: symbol for 0
こんな問題が受験問題に出題されたら "panic" に落ちそうです。
答えはBで例文は: "Don't panic!" the landscaper said to his assistant. "That's not poison sumac - it's just woolly panic grass." が載っていました。
"sumac" も以前とりあげた単語ですが、恐らく受験に役立つ単語ではありません。（通訳ガイドの試験なら出ないとは限りませんが）　 "panic" を辞書で見てみます。
・Webster's New World College Dictionary: any of several grasses (genus Panicum), as millet, used as fodder; also panic grass
・Natural Magick: A plant of the genus Panicum; panic grass; also, the edible grain of some species of panic grass. Panic grass (Bot.), any grass of the genus Panicum.

"panic" は雑穀の一種のようですが、植物に興味のない方には迷惑な話題でしたね。

burden

リーダーズダイジェスト10月号の単語クイズ欄、Word PowerはDouble Entendrer がテーマで、Many common words have secondary meanings that aren't widely known. と但し書きがあるように、出題された１７の単語は何れも "pen", "fetch", "burden", "panic" などの見慣れているものですが、問題は難しく、私が分かった問題は以前話題にした事のある "pulse" だけでした。　
その他の単語は何れも、「へえー、こんな意味があるの！」と感心しますが、とてもその新しい意味を全部は覚えられそうもありません。　とりあえず特に興味を覚えた二つの単語をとり上げる事にします。
その一つは "burden" で、ＲＤの問題はいつものように次ぎの三択から選ぶものです。
A: refrain of a song
B: footnote
C: reflection in a mirror
答えはＡで、回答の例文（Janie is constantly burdened by having the burden of "It's a Small World" stuck in her head.）を読んだら、やはり以前話題にした "earworm" を思い出しました。
"burden" のこの意味を載せていない辞書もありますが Dictonary.comには "Music. the refrain or recurring chorus of a song" とありました。
