アメリカのクリスマス Christmas in America

 現代では、世界中でクリスマスを祝うようになってきました。飾りの美しいクリスマスツリーや、サンタさんの赤い服を着た初老の姿や、きれいなイルミネーションの光景などはどこへ行っても共通しているでしょうが、中には国によって違った習慣があります。

In modern times, Christmas is celebrated all over the world. Anywhere you go, you'll see decorated Christmas trees, Santa's image of an aging man dressed in red, and beautiful nighttime illuminations. Within those traditions, however, there are those that change from country to country.

日本では、クリスマスの日に恋人とデートに行ったりすることが多いと思いますが、アメリカでは、クリスマスは「恋人恋愛」というより、「家族愛」という気持ちが一番強いです。家族にとって、クリスマスは一年間の中で最も大切な日です。実家に帰って親戚と一緒に過ごすために、仕事は1週間ぐらい（クリスマスの前の日から正月の後まで）の休みに入ります。 学校は秋学期と春学期を分ける冬休みに入りますので休みは２、３週間です。

In Japan, it's common to go on a romantic date with one's significant other on Christmas Day, but in America, the strongest feelings on Christmas are not that of romantic love, but of familial love. Christmas is the most important day of the year for families. Many workplaces are closed for the week to allow people to go home and spend the holidays with their families (from Christmas Day to New Year's). Schools enter their winter vacation between fall and spring semesters, so they are off for two to three weeks.

 

また、習慣として日本ではクリスマスケーキは欠かせないものになっていますね。これはアメリカから来た習慣だと思われているようですが、実は、日本の伝統的な「クリスマスケーキ」はアメリカでは存在しません。

Aside from that, the Christmas cake has become a staple of Japanese tradition. It's often thought to be something that came from America, but in reality, Japanese Christmas cake does not exist in America.

確かに、国によっては決まった食べ物があって、そしてその中にはお菓子があるかもしれませんが、スポンジケーキにホイップクリームやイチゴを飾りつけたものは日本の独特のものです。『不二家』が発売したのが始まりで、メジャーになってきたのは戦後の昭和25年頃からだそうです。

To be sure, each country has its own particular foods eaten that day, including the sweets, but the sponge cake topped with whipped cream and strawberries is a special Japanese dish. The cake shop "Fujiya" first introduced the holiday cake to the public, and it became widespread in the 1950's.

アメリカでは、ベーカリーに行けば普通の飾ったケーキを売っていますが、クリスマスの伝統と言えばクリスマス・クッキーです。

In America, there are cakes being sold as usual in the bakery, but when it comes to Christmas tradition, nothing beats the Christmas cookie.

 

 

親子は自宅でクリスマスの音楽を聴きながら、一緒にシュガークッキーを作って、クリスマスのテーマでフロスティング（砂糖の衣）などで飾り付けをして、家族と楽しい時間を過ごす習慣となっています。私も、今でもこういうふうな暖かくて懐かしい思い出を心の中で抱いています。

There stands a tradition of parents and children enjoying their time together by listening to Christmas music as they make sugar cookies and decorate them with frosting in various Christmas themes. Even today, I have warm, fond memories of doing this during my childhood.

これからのクリスマス、ケーキを買う代わりに、家族や友達と一緒にキッチンで手作りクリスマス・クッキーを作ったり飾ったりしてみたらいかがですか？クリスマスツリー、星、天使などのクリスマステーマの形の抜き型があれば、簡単にできます！

How about skipping the big Christmas cake purchase this year by instead heading to the kitchen and making cookies together with your friends or family? If you have cookie cutters in the shape of Christmas trees, stars, or angels, it's a piece of cake!
