忍者同情 Ninja Dojo

D君のお母さんが毎年近くのクリスマス・イベントでボランティアをしていますので、この間私はD君と一緒にイベントを見に行きました。

イベントの名前は「Festival of Trees」（クリスマスツリーまつり）で、いろんなクリスマス飾り（クリスマスツリーそのものやもっと小さいもの）を展示して、イベントに来る人たちが欲しいものを買って、最後に利益が寄付されます。展示の一つは「ジンジャーブレッド・ハウス」のコーナーでした。

D's mother volunteers at the local annual Christmas event "Festival of Trees", so we went to go see it the other day. There are a lot of Christmas decorations and trees displayed and for sale, with proceeds going to charity. One of the displays was for gingerbread houses.

ジンジャーブレッド・ハウスというのは、ジンジャーブレッド・クッキーやお菓子で作る家です。アメリカではクリスマスに作られることが多いです。

A gingerbread house is a house made of gingerbread cookies and sweets, often made during Christmas as an American tradition.

お菓子を使って自由に作りますので、形が決まっていません。典型的なジンジャーブレッド・ハウスを見ると、こんな感じです：

その中の一つは特に目立ちました。ある参加者は日本が好きらしいで、日本の「道場」をイメージにしました。ジンジャーブレッド道場の中にジンジャーブレッド忍者が（ポッキーの棒を使って）訓練していて、なんと外に石庭もコイの池も設置！笑っちゃったのが漢字のところでした。実際に読めたのが絶対に私一人だけでした。私は漢字を読む時、日本語の読み方より英語での意味のほうが先に頭に浮かびますので、「何でsympathyと書いてあるだろう...」と思っていたら、読み方の「ドウジョウ」が次に来ました。

なるほど！面白い！本人は「dojo kanji」をググったら、最初に出たのが「同情」らしい。

One of them particularly stood out. One of the participants seemed to really love Japan, because they made a gingerbread dojo with gingerbread ninjas practicing with Pocky sticks. There was even a rock garden and a koi pond! I laughed at the kanji part. I was guaranteed to be the only person in the whole place that could read it. When I read kanji, the English meaning comes to mind faster than the Japanese reading, so I thought to myself, "Why would they write 'sympathy' on the building?" But then I realized that sympathy in Japanese is pronounced "dojo."

Aha! A homonym. That's too funny. I guess when they googled "dojo kanji" the wrong word came up.

他人が作った「招き猫」というテーマのクリスマスツリーもありましたよ！やっぱりアメリカ人は日本のことが大好きですね。

There was even a Lucky Cat themed Christmas tree by someone else! Man, Americans sure do love Japan.

大統領選挙戦：最終日 Presidential Election: The Final Day

今日で、投票日に入り、大統領選挙の終わりに達しました。本当にうるさい一年間でした。

もう誰でもいいから早く投票を数えて終わりにしてくれよぉ～　テレビでもインターネットのサイトでもYouTubeでも看板でも車のバンパーステッカーでもどこ見ても候補者の宣伝しかない　それにほとんど自分の話じゃなくてただ相手の悪口をする「attack ad」（中傷キャンペーン）　国の運命がかかっているのに毎回子供の喧嘩みたいになっちゃって...もう情けない　

Today we enter voting day and reach the end of the presidential campaign. It has been a truly obnoxious year.

I don't even care who it is anymore, just please hurry up and count the ballots to put an end to this! Everywhere you look--on TV, on websites, on YouTube, on billboards, on car bumper stickers--it's nothing but candidate ads! And on top of that, a ton of them are just attack ads!

Even with the fate of our country on the line, every time it boils down to a childish fight. It's pitiful.

 

 

それに、アメリカ人が自分の意見を大声で出すのが好きなので、知らない人とでも（特にインターネットで）喧嘩になったり、家の庭などにサインを立てたりしますので、宣伝トラックがありがたい事にないのですが、その代わり、アメリカ人自体がうるさいです。（もちろんニュース番組も大統領選挙の話のみ）

私の実家ではサインを立てませんが近所の人たちが結構立てています。他人がサインを見て気持ちが変わるわけないし、喧嘩のもとになるだけだと思いますので、私はアメリカの「絶対に意見を他人に言わなくちゃいけない」という気持ちがきらいです。

Also, Americans love to announce their opinions to other people, so (especially on the internet) people get in arguments with people they don't even know, and post signs on their yards. There aren't the obnoxiously noisy political "announcement trucks" like there are in Japan, but instead of that, we've got the Americans making all the noise themselves. (And, of course, the news almost exclusively talks about the election lately.)

My house doesn't have a sign on it, but a lot of our neighbors do. There's no chance someone is going to see a sign on a yard and change their mind, so I only see them as a way to fuel another argument. So I really hate the American mindset of "I absolutely need to tell everyone else what my opinion is."

 

私は今アリゾナ州にいますのでウィスコンシン州の実家を出る前に不在者投票で投票しました。早めに投票したほうが当日めちゃくちゃ込んでいる投票所に行かなくて済むので、毎回そうしているアメリカ人が多いです。

私は今回の候補者、２人ともひどいと思っていますので迷ったまま投票しました。どちらにしても投票するのが悔しいですが、「一番悪くないのが誰かな？」という考え方で決めました。とにかく今日は最後なのでニュースなどを見ないようにしています。結果を楽しみにしています。

I'm in Arizona right now, so when I left home in Wisconsin I voted early with an absentee ballot. A lot of Americans vote early so they can avoid the crazy crowds at the polling centers. 

I think both the candidates this year were a horrible choice, so I ended up voting while still technically undecided. I just went in with the mindset, "who is the less terrible?" Either way, today is the last day, so I'm going to avoid watching the news. I look forward to the results.
