Robert Burton [UK]
Inspired by our visit to Japan in 2013 I proceeded with an exploration of origami,
exploring the manipulation of Japanese Washi papers in the creation of a garment
form as one material turned and folded. Influences also came from the Infra-ordinary
and the Quotidian screen printing ordinary objects ‒ towels hanging on the bathroom door and
using ordinary substrates ‒ paper the material of the everyday ‒ the note taken, the lines written,
the empty page ‒ to create a garment that bridges the threshold between the ordinary
and the empty space.
Rob Burton is the Head of Art and Design at Teesside University in the UK.
He is a practicing textile artist and designer who regularly exhibits his work internationally. Rob
also produces fashion collections that unify both conceptual making and elegant and
often quirky fashion under the name Miss Kiki Salon with his wife Kate Burton.
As joint creative directors their recent works have included many exciting collaboration with
international artists and performers. Recent exhibitions have included

The possibilities of life, sometimes red and looking on the bright side of things,
but also dark and depressive.
Life turns, sometimes round , sometimes square, but its always still beeing developed.
born in 1949 technical education self-taught artist
independent studio artist
Longstanding occupation with all available textile materials, the possibilities of use and creation.
I mainly used silk, sometimes combined with other materials like poyester or metal threads.
My favorite technique is the Shaped Resist Dyeing - Shibori.
With Shibori it is given a three-dimensional form by folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting or
plucking and twisting, you can see on my works.
I work in concert with the materials, not in an effort to overcome their limitations
but to allow them full expression.

I work as an artist since 1979.
( and as a teacher at the Gooise Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten since 1981 )
From 1979 up till 2007 I worked as a visual artist in the architecture.
Mostly wooden objects and glass ( monumental )
Since 1990 the glass objects contained plant material like tree leaves, petals and algae.
In my work I try to understand the structure and coherence of nature.
Therefore I denude plant structures by focussing on the smallest
possible microscopic details in an attempt to understand the bigger picture.
In the end the work will be a combination of imagination and scientific observation.
For instance ‘ shadow forest ‘ was not solely created out of
fascination for the photosynthesis but also as a wish for an (artificial) enlargement
of the global forestry.
Artificial as a reference to new developments in harnessing solar energy for
the production of clean fuels.
Mutual and mycorrhiza show an other aspect of the real forest
: the symbiotic relationships between fungi and plant roots.
These relationships can be very complex and inventive.
I like to compete with nature in beauty and inventiveness,
