The TranzCoastal Train

The TranzCoastal – Picton to Christchurch - Gateway to South Island adventure.
The TranzCoastal train journey travels between the delightful port of Picton and Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city. This journey is a scenic feast of New Zealand, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side of your train and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline on the other. Along the way you pass though the village of Kaikoura, where, if you're touring New Zealand, you can break your journey to take in the whale watching or dare to get closer and swim with the dolphins.
Travel through some of New Zealand’s finest horticultural and farmland areas, and see amazing wildlife such as dolphins, seals and penguins from the comfort of your train carriage.
One of the world's most scenic train journeys, the TranzCoastal travels through 22 tunnels and crosses 175 bridges. As on the TranzAlpine, the TranzCoastal includes an open air viewing carriage where all your senses are awakened with the clean, fresh, sea air.

これはディーゼル機関で牽引する列車です。自転車は列車の最後部にある貨物車に他の客の手荷物と一緒に乗せます。
速度は車よりは随分遅いです。
車掌はどの席に誰が座るかと言うリストを所持していて木目の細かいサービスをしてくれます。社内の売店にはスナックやビールも売られています。
先の旅行で途中下車する我々のために列車を止めたときに「日本からのサイクリストを降ろすからしばらく停車します」というアナウンスがされたこともあります。
ただ困るのは車内放送が欧州系の乗り物にしては五月蝿いことです。車掌の親切はありがたいが静かに走ってほしいものです。

切符は左の図のようにネットで購入しますので、チェックインの時に予約内容をプリントしたものを提示すると、その用紙に席が手書きされるシステムになっています。

時間の精度は距離が伸びるに連れて１０分単位が時間単位で遅れていきます。どこかの国のように１９秒を気にしてはいません。何時間以上遅れたら特急料金を払い戻すこともありません。何せ特急は走っていません。

急ぐ人は車、時間のある人は自転車でもお使いなさいという国です。
現実に、公共交通機関の不整備から、中学生は自動車の利用が認められていますが単独運転という条件付です。友達と乗るとふざけてスピードを出したりするからです。

State Highway 63 は基本的には下り坂ですから楽ですが、川沿いの道は特に川が曲がるところのカーブの外側は丘になっているので結構起伏があります。
最初から平たんと決めてかかっているのでこの起伏が辛いものになります。

宿に着けば冷たい白ワインが飲めるので頑張って走りましょう。

Nelson を出るとしばらくは平たんな道を走ります。
上の写真には出てきませんが State Highway 4 を Belgrove で別れて山道へ入ります。ここから State Highway 63 Junction までは閑道ですから、車に会うこともなく人家もありません。もちろんコンビニなんて想像もつかない所です。熊はいないから鈴は不要でしょう。
とにかく本日の宿まで走るだけ。ゴールできれば「おめでとう」です。
はっきり言えるのは「賢者」はこんな旅を金を払ってまでしません。普通はスポンサーをつけて金をもらって走ります。私たちは「愚者」です。「ぐしゃ」と読みます。２人で走りますから「ぐしゃぐしゃ」です。すみません、英語が話せますから「ぐしゃず」でした。



ここで泊まりますよ。経験から言うとこの写真ではとてつもなく大きな家です。

steep hills　と書かれていますがこれは急峻な坂という意味…大変だ。


上の地図の State Highway 4 の記号の左二つくらいが峰を越すピークの場所です。地図では暗部と表現されています。

Kiwi Cycling IV -- The Grove

Monday 23rd November 2009
Train to Blenhiem. Train departs at 0715, Addington Train Station.
Check in at 7am at the latest.
Train arrives at to Blenhiem at 12.05pm, then cycle to Anakiwa/ The Grove (50km undulating ride with a number of smaller hill climbs)

ここまでは小さな上り下りが続き、体をサイクリングモードにするのに都合の良いコースでしょう。
宿はフィヨルドに面しておりきっと素晴らしいでしょう。
航空写真の黒っぽいところが海です。

Kiwi Cyclig IV 走行ルート

上の地図は少し見づらいですが Marlborough と書かれているところの青線で書かれた無1周コース "Marlborugh Explorer" と銘銘されたコースを走ります。さしづめマルボローの探検コースですかね～。

私の使っていますガイドブック lonley planet では時計方向に回りますが、このツアーのために自転車を用意してくれている会社によれば反時計方向が走りやすいと言うことでそれに従います。
この周回コースの中心は Mt. Richmond という1700mの山とそれを取り囲む樹林帯をぐるっと回るものです。

Christchurch から Blenhiem までは汽車で行きます。この路線は完全に観光用で1日1往復しかありません。

Blenhiem で汽車を降りて線路沿いに北上します。線路沿いですから坂道はありません。汽車の終点 Picton を通過し Grove まで 60km を走りここで泊まります。


２日目は Nelson まで峠というか暗部を2つ越します。距離は90km、坂道は8%ぐらいはあるでしょう。
泊まるところ Nelson は1年の日照時間が2500hrもあるので Nelson bright という言葉があるほどです。ここで美味しいワインと魚料理を頂いて翌日の拷問に耐える準備をします。


３日目は St. Arnaud まで90km走りますが、大きなピークを３つ越すずっと登りのコースです。ゴールは750mの峠を下ったところにある Mt. Arnud 保養地です。ここでサイクリングは終わったようなものです。明日は下り坂だけ。

４日目は初日に汽車を降りた Blenhiem まで90kmくらい走ってお泊り。
５日目は昼の汽車の時間まで近くのワイナリーの梯子です。
