Chapter #17: VOLUNTEER WORK FOR FOREIGNERS LIVING AND VISITING JAPAN

Several years ago from this writing I met an old Isuzu friend on my way home from work on evening. I told him what I’ve been doing and he explained his projects. I mentioned I would like to get more involved in volunteer work in the local community, particularly when foreigners are involved. He introduced me to a group of foreigners that was promoting my part of Tokyo to not only foreign visitors but to the Japanese residents themselves who haven’t had the time to get to know the area.

One of the activities was to develop a pamphlet in several languages to that promotes tourism in our area.

Chinese, Korean, English pamphlet for tour guide for our area

One of the activities was to develop a pamphlet in several languages to that promotes tourism in our area.
Also, as within our area is Haneda International Airport we had an international festival there.

New Year’s party with my area mayor, international festival at Haneda Airport, group yearend party

At the time of this writing the Japanese Yen to other currencies has weakened. This has made Japan a very attractive country for tourists. It is cheap, beautiful, safe and industrious. Also, it has a very long and interesting history.

Touring Kamakura

With the Olympics coming to Tokyo in 2020, I’m pushing the government and mayor in my area to get prepared to make this opportunity as successful as possible. There are several targets we want to get involved in. One is showing tourists the historic attractions and temples in our area. Another is introducing foreigners to natural hot spring baths. Still another is to evaluate restaurants and bars in the area and get them prepared in English for foreign customers. Furthermore, along with the eastern part of Osaka, our area of Tokyo has several thousand small manufacturers of from one to 10 employees. They make specialty parts mostly for major Japanese manufacturers’ equipment and for research. Some have a great deal of technology, and I would like to introduce this technology to foreign companies.

I’m hoping all these activities will be a golden opportunity to further my goals of interacting and understanding the global community.

26.Developing and controlling habits
Some people and companies have habits that form its working culture. What if those habits are counterproductive? Or, more commonly, they were productive once but are no more. How do you change those habits? I present strategies I have studied in this 26 slide presentation. It has helped me personally as well just preparing it.

27.Future markets through resource use
We all know how the world was changed by the invention of the steam engine in the 1700’s. People could stop using animals for power. That was the first industrial revolution. We all know that the invention of electricity, the discovery of oil and coal brought people into cities in the 1800’s which was the second industrial revolution. In our time with the global population growing and aging, we are finding availability and prices of resources major concern. With this move us to a third industrial revolution? If so, what will it look like? After researching the subject, I discuss this and the global industrials we should be looking at in the future in this 29 slide presentation.

28.How to approach emerging countries
Where is the growth in the world? Where are the emerging markets? If a company was to try to expand global operations there what concerns would there be? I discuss this in the 13 slide presentation and have personally been to many of these countries.

29.Becoming digital masters
Technology is changing the way we live and work. To become more global, how can a company use communication technology? I identify four main categories to explore in this 60 slide presentation.

30.Facilitating adaptive change
To make some changes, all that need be done is the boss saying to do it. In other cases, the people who specialize on the subject can make the decision. In other problems many people must be involved in the decision must be included in the decision-making discussion. How do you do this successfully? It is not easy but can be done. I discuss this very difficult subject in this 43 slide presentation.

As you can see from the above, I have prepared a great deal of material to achieve my goal of expanding global interaction and understanding, particularly among Japanese companies. I have given several of those seminars in Japanese. They were quite successful and I very much hope to share this material more with as many people over the years to come.

Ronさんの素晴らしいところの一つは、自分の体験や学習をプレゼンテーションのパッケージとしてまとめていることです。

16.Sales & marketing differences
I have run into cases where sales people are asked to do marketing. How can one salesman cover one region know the total demand for the whole national or global market? Sales and marketing are different. They carry different functions and must help each other. I explain that is this 30 slide presentation to make those differences clear and could be applied globally as well.

17.Surviving in a recession
Some companies thrive in recessions. Some of the greatest success of all time came in recessions. How are those companies different? I explain this in this 41slide presentation.

18.Building competitive strategy
How can a company become more competitive? That is a very complicated question; therefore I really had to do a lot of studies over and above the competitive advantages in my sales seminars. After much study and research, I produced an in-detailed 64 slide presentation on this covering not only a company’s competitive advantage, but a whole industry.

19.Bottom of pyramid business development
When we look at the total global market we notice 4 billion people that live on less than US$2/day.
Because of the number of people, they have US$5 trillion in purchasing power. How does a company sell in that market? I use the tools learned in the Blue Ocean Strategy and apply it to this market. Also, I give many examples of success stories. I present it in a 19 slide presentation.

20.Production Management
As I mentioned in chapter #15 that I had a chance to help set up a production operation for an American company in China. I learned a great deal that exercise. I learned that each process has its limitations. How do you arrange the production line to get the most performance and not necessarily spend money in expensive equipment? I discuss this in this 41 slide presentation.

11.Nonverbal communications
It is often said that Japanese people do not communicate well international. But, their artist skills are quite high. How can a person communicate better visually when a person’s language skills are not very high? This presentation shows how and has 53 slides for the longest version. I have used shorter versions as well to just show the key points.

12.CEO pride
Having worked with and for small business, I have learned that the owner or CEO has a lot of pride for getting things done. Sometimes that is a great benefit. Sometimes it can cause problems when the company gets too big. How can these problems be solved? I have seen this problem in both Japan and many countries around the world, studied it and prepared a 27 slide presentation on my findings.

13.Building trust international
Doing international business can be very risky and you must work with a lot of foreign partners to get things done. How can you trust them? Are there any procedures that could be followed? I studied this, added my experience and prepared a presentation on it. It has 35 slides.

14.Becoming creative
What happens when you have do everything you can to make a creative environment but no ideas come out. What activities can be introduced to generate ideas for the future, particularly when global activities? I studied come strategies and present them in a 21slide presentation.

Ronさんの自分史最終章(その3)

6.Team building, personality types
I mentioned this seminar in an earlier chapter. In international business, there are many different types of people. How do you get them all working together? In this presentation, I show the concept of personality types and explore how these types can work together using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. My presentation is 35 slides long.

7.High personal and company energy
How do you generate energy in a company and in yourself particularly in an international environment when jet-lag is a real problem? I look at the things that energize us and the things that draw energy out of us. If you want to get a lot out of each day and if you want your company to be high in energy on a global scale, this presentation might be interesting. It is 67 slides long.

8.Single owner company growth strategy
Most companies are started by someone who has an idea and is good at something. So, he starts doing it. Then, he learns more and more people want what he is doing. Finally, he doesn’t have enough time to help everyone with what he is doing, so he hires people, but employees will only do so much and then relax. How do you grow from there? This is the point when franchises start. I explain this procedure in a 26 slide presentation. It shows how this could be done globally as well.

9.Company stakeholder strategy
What is a company stakeholder? This term has been used a lot. I explain this term and how a company can communicate with each stakeholder (including global stakeholders) in a 21 slide presentation.

10.Sales management
This seminar I talked about in earlier chapters. If a company wants to expand international in sales it has to develop an active sales network. I have used this material in determining my own distributors in Europe and the United States. Are they fully covering the market? That is my key question and this seminar covers all the main points. It has 87 slides in it and is very detailed, as I have found over the years that sales management is the leak link in most sales organizations today.

2.Selling skills and the selling process
Since I spent all those years training sales people successful and now confirmed that the material could be used for any product that required a presentation and getting to know the customer personally, I decided to prepare it in Japanese for selling globally. I have given that seminar several times now to Japanese people interest in sales and building their own business. I made several versions, but the longest presentation had 55 slides.

3.SPEED, as a competitive advantage
One of the key things I learned teaching sales training is that there are three things being sold when a product is sold. One is the product itself. Usually the customer decides this is the best product for them considering the features, performance price, design, etc. Also, the company is sold. There are cases that the after-sales service and support is far more important than the product itself. Speed and quality of service repairs and maintenance, product training and a wide range of support fall into this category. Then, finally is the sales person himself. Does he still maintain contact with the customer to make sure all is going well? Does he care about the performance of the product sold? Does he confirm that all he said before the sales was true? I have learned that all three of these things can develop customer loyalty. Just selling the product does not. One of the most powerful methods a person or company can use to build this loyalty is using speed as a competitive advantage. With today’s communication technology, I have found this a powerful advantage globally. If you answer the customer’s question in three minutes as opposed to three weeks, there is a big difference. Therefore, I prepared a 24 slide presentation on this.

4.Companies with creative environment
How is a company successfully motivated to be more creative and come up with new ideas in their study of going global business? Is it through incentives or fear? Or, is there a better way? I discuss this concern in a 25 slide presentation based on years of research on how the mind works.

5.Creating company change
Studies have showed that most companies will reject change (particularly global strategies) even when they are forced to make adjustments in their business plan. In some studies, over 80% of the people will fight the change. How can you use the other 20% to introduce change and make improvements? I discuss this in a 13 slide presentation.

Chapter #16: BRINGING GLOBAL EXPERTISE TO JAPANESE COMPANIES

With the years of experience explained in this book, I now think I can be helpful to Japanese companies who want to (and in some cases who have to) get more involved in global interaction and global projects.

Over the past eight to ten years, communication technology has provided ways to do global business faster, cheaper and far less fatiguing. I’m able to maintain service to my current customer in many cases by the use of a smart phone. My international travel has been reduced to only 2-3 times a year.

That has opened up a lot of free time for me to prepare for the future regarding my goal global interaction desires. Therefore, for Japanese business people, I started several years ago to researching and prepare seminars and presentations on a wide range of subjects that I think would be helpful for Japanese business. These presentations are based on not only my global experience, but on the experience and expertise of some of the best consultants and global business people in the world. As I mostly gave presentations to retail truck sales people around the world that did not have a great deal of education, I made the presentations very visual and easy to understand. Just developing them has taught me a great deal too.

Let me introduce some of them. I give the number of slides in each presentation to give you a feeling how long one presentation could be if you have any interest in learning more at all.

1. Factory rental and reducing production costs
The first PowerPoint presentation I worked on in Japanese was to explain the factory rental plan for Japanese companies interested in overseas production. Sometimes it is to sell globally; in other cases it is to get close to raw materials to reduce costs and other cases it is to reduce labor costs. I have given this seminar quite a few times in Japanese to these small companies. This presentation had 14 slides.

Ronさんの自分史。UNIKAの貸工場活用法。グローバルに働くということ。

2016-01-05 20:50:37 | Ron's Life Story

That is where I was able to be helpful. We had the new renter become a division of Unika, so they didn’t have to establish their own company in China. We provided them the least amount of space, so they could slowly get started with their own manufacturing. Under their direction, we purchased and imported equipment and raw materials using our staff. Once set up, we used our personnel department to start hiring qualified employees as Unika employees but assigned to the renter’s project.

From Tokyo, every month we invoiced the renter for space rented, employee wages, materials purchased and all general services like office sharing, imports and exports and overall overhead. In that case, we both were very successful.

That project lasted for eight years and then the renter gain enough confidence to start its own company in China. I would like to repeat that success again in China and possibly Vietnam in the future for small Japanese companies.

グローバルに働くということ。
Coming to Unika has allowed me new ways to expand on global interaction activities. I have sales in around twenty countries worldwide, particularly in Europe and the United States. I took Japanese development engineers to several countries in Europe and had them work on project with European engineers. Also, I got an American company working with both Japanese and Chinese production personal to start production in China.

They’ve all been very exciting global activities for me. Please notice the below. I have now been to over 80 countries worldwide. Some were private for traveling, some were for training with Isuzu Motors and others were for sales activities and project working with Unika.

My global interaction is been moving at a high pace over these years.

Ronさんの自分史。UNIKAの貸工場ビジネス。借り手のメリットは?

2016-01-05 00:07:44 | Ron's Life Story

*******************************************************************************

Factory Rental Project

UNIKAの貸工場
I mentioned that Unika had to have partners to start production overseas. One of the ways to do that is have several companies share one production complex in China and Vietnam. In China, Unika rented space in their factory that was not being use to some of its customers in Japan that were involved in different projects. In Vietnam, a joint venture chartered in Hong Kong was established.

After learning that concept and finding out that there was excess capacity in the China Factory, I asked if I could promote the rental of that space to my European and American customers which was approved.

In 2005, I successfully found a company that took a whole building from us to start up production in China. The plan started in very small stages to keep the risk as low as possible for the renter coming to China for the first time.

Factory rental in China, starting in 2005

貸工場のメリット
For a company to start manufacturing overseas there are many risks. Many just give up their manufacturing (in the US or Europe) and buy from some inexpensive foreign company. There are advantages of manufacturing by on your own though. First, you control the production and shipments. You can use your existing equipment and not just scrap it. You can control the quality of the raw materials. You can control the quality of all production processes. You can protect your production technology and not expose it to an outside supplier. The problem is doing all this in a low risk and lot investment way.
