The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy―British Art and Design from the Metropolitan's Collection

"MET"の愛称で親しまれているメトロポリタン美術館（ニューヨーク）。
世界有数のコレクションを誇る同美術館と、ニューヨーク近代美術館（略称："MOMA"）は、同市を訪れる際には決して見逃せない。
現在、東京・六本木の森アーツセンターギャラリーで「ラファエル前派展」が開催されている。
同展覧会を訪れた感想については、2月14日のブログ記事に綴っている。
今回紹介する美術展は、同じくラファエル前派の作品を扱うものである。
とはいえ、テート美術館（イギリス）のコレクションから構成された、いま東京で開かれている「ラファエル前派展」がそのまま巡回するわけではない。
あくまで"MET"に収蔵されている作品が展示されることになっている。
こちらが、"MET"公式HPに掲載されている「ラファエル前派展」開催予定に関する告知記事である。
今年の５月から１０月にかけて開かれる予定の同展覧会は、いま貼り付けたページでも書かれているように、ラファエル前派の運動「全体」を捉えようとするものではない。
現在六本木で開かれている展覧会とは異なり、いわゆるラファエル前派の〈第二世代〉に焦点を当てるものである。
つまり、バーン＝ジョーンズやモリスが展示の中心となる。
先ほど貼り付けたページの記事を読んで、今回この美術展を紹介しようと思ったのには理由がある。
その記事の最初の二行がきわめて洗練されていたためである。

簡潔ながら端的に、ラファエル前派の運動の本質を捉えている。
たしかに、目新しい要素は何もないかもしれない。
しかし、一語たりとも無駄な語句はなく、言葉の選択もきわめて良質のものである。
私が辞書を作ったなら、「ラファエル前派」の定義は上のものと全く同じものを採用するだろう。
もっとも、Wikipediaの解説の最初の二行くらいは頭に要るだろうが。
