artery 2

2024-01-31 11:06:48 | Vocab - politics
I'm revising the post titled artery.
https://blog.goo.ne.jp/cambridge2017/e/0f9209481b05c439bf96079ac7004a4c

I found this article has been completely updated compared with which I posted on 14th January.
The URL is same but the title and the content have been changed significantly.

[URL] https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-67972796
[Now] UK will back words with actions against Houthis in Yemen - Cameron
[Then]UK had no choice but to strike Houthis - Cameron

The new content is not a summary of the Telegraph article. Now it is a brief account of BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme. It's not just a revision, a complete swap.
I knew The Guardian put remarks when the article is revised, but it looks that BBC doesn't mention revision of the articles.

Anyway, artery is not a word from the article. It is quoted from the original Telegraph article.

We’ve sent an unambiguous message to the Houthis: your attacks have to stop
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/13/unambiguous-message-to-houthis-your-attacks-have-to-stop/

[quote]The Red Sea is one of the major arteries of international trade: some 15 per cent of the world’s shipping passes through the narrow strait dividing Africa from Asia. [unquote]

[Collins]Arteries are the tubes in your body that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body.
[Collins]Your veins are the thin tubes in your body through which your blood flows towards your heart.

prudence

2024-01-30 22:38:22 | Vocab - business
This news tells risks to me who have a bank account in the UK.

HSBC fined £57.4m for customer deposit protection failings
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68138476

[quote]Under the scheme, customer deposits are protected up to the value of £85,000.[unquote]
It's similar amount as Japanese bank aside from the weak yen rate.

Word
PRA: Bank's Prudential Regulation Authority
prudential < prudence - I didn't know the parent company. "Prudential Financial" > "Prudential Life Insurance" (Japan)
"Dear Prudence" is about Prudence Farrow, the sister of Mia Farrow.
duly
brush - brush with authority

New Year's resolution 2

2024-01-30 21:32:51 | Nonsense
I'd like to add one more resolution. I'll stop drinking alcohol at home before summer.
The reason of summer is because I cannot abandon two dozen special craft beers and three bottles of fine wines which are stored at home. I need to drink up them before the temperature in my flat will rise to 30 degrees that make fine wines and beers bad.
I've gone out for dinner, parties and regular bars for socialising, but not drunk at home.
I feel guilty about not buying wines at a neighbourhood wine shop. I have to say my determination to them. I've helped them since they started their business. I will try to buy groceries instead, such as olive oils, cheeses.

New Year's resolution

2024-01-30 19:25:32 | Nonsense
2024 has passed almost one month. The Chinese new year is approaching.
It's time to unveil my New Year's resolution.

I declare that the New Year's resolution is not using Japanese in the blog.
It's a big challenge for me, but I need to improve my writing.

I'm trying to apply this rule to the old posts retroactively.
My goal is to change this blog to an English blog by the end of the year.

artery

2024-01-14 21:36:02 | Vocab - politics
It looks the debut of Lord Cameron as the Foreign Secretary.

UK had no choice but to strike Houthis - Cameron
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-67972796
The article is just a summary of the article of the Telegraph.
I cannot find the map of the important trade routes in the Telegraph article. Taiwan.

Word. not so many
unambiguous <>ambiguous
navigation - the freedom of navigation - this is the original meaning
paramount adjective - accent
retaliation < retaliate
strait - Bab al-Mandab Strait (wiki: Bab-el-Mandeb)this is the strait of Dire Straits. It seems sure is that he Strait looks extremely narrow on the map.

Word - Telegraph
weigh B2 I'm familiar with the word, but don't remember.
[Collins]If you weigh the facts about a situation, you consider them very carefully before you make a decision, especially by comparing the various facts involved.
forensically < forensic it's a criminal word, but it is used in the article as[Collins]Forensic means relating to the legal profession.
impunity > with impunity phrase[Collins]If you say that someone does something with impunity, you disapprove of the fact that they are not punished for doing something bad.
malign - pronunciation. adjective. words beginning with "mal" look always evil. Aw, that is true [Collins]Mal- is added to words in order to form new words which describe things that are bad or unpleasant, or that are unsuccessful or imperfect.
arteries < artery this is a very important word. I may picked this in the blog before.

I'm not sure if the article is wrote by himself or his staff, but its structure is 5W1H type of writing. It can be referable.
Why
But why us?
But why now?
What’s next?

The war is not only Israel-Gaza war.
It's not pleasant that the situation requires extra cost to spend for the transport between Europe and Japan. The diversion also causes negative impacts, such as global warming, increase of defence budget in Japan.
I don't want to be embroiled in the dispute whose script has been written by Israel.

eightfold

2024-01-14 18:10:25 | Vocab - business
It was a scam as I thought.
It wasn't WhatsApp but sometimes I receive messages of recruiting by iMessage. I've got a message from whose company is "Mercer".
It's funny that I receive a message from UK postoffice regarding package delivery, but I wonder, for a moment, if the sender might saw my LinkedIn when I received a recruiting message. It is obvious that recruiters never contact by iMessage, though.

'I had £3,000 stolen via WhatsApp job scam message'
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-67945171

Word
scammer
fraudster
Action Fraud https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/what-is-action-fraud It is written UK and national, but it looks Scotland is not their territory.
eightfold [Collins]-fold combines with numbers to form adverbs which say how much an amount has increased by. For example, if an amount increases fourfold, it is four times greater than it was originally.
find my feet < find one's feet [Collins]to become capable or confident, as in a new job
legitimate
groom - I cannot find this meaning in dictionaries. Similar meanings even it's not sexual in the article - [Oxford]illegal sexual act to children using social media
distraught
criminologist
upfront
DBS - Disclosure and Barring Service
Financial Ombudsman Service > ombudsman

We can listen the voice of the victim and the criminologist in MoneyBox programme, but it seems that the young victim is trying to be positive.

I've been receiving inquiries since I updated LinkedIn in 2020. They were all small or medium size UK companies, but were they all scams?

How to Avoid the Latest LinkedIn Scams in 2023
https://tech.co/news/linkedin-scams-to-avoid
My cases are different from this article's. I didn't know about Nihon Arubaito.
I was recruited by a rich business man who lives in Manhattan NY last night. I ignore words of drunks. It's all just talk in a bar.

[M6]Use of English -Multiple-choice-cloze/Word formation

2024-01-13 22:03:59 | Workbook
新年なので問題集開きますよ。今日は一粒万倍日らしいですし。

Multiple-choice-close
install oneself be installed oneself at/in
the course of - the course of their lives
[Collins]You can refer to the way that events develop as, for example, the course of history or the course of events

Word formation
一つだけ間違えた。participants 複数形!
単語
intrude > intrusive
overhear overheard

一粒万倍日は初めて聞きましたが。なんか恵方巻きみたいな唐突感。
超最強開運日、何かを始めるにはとてもいい日、ということでしたが。
ぐぐったら悪いことも何倍にもなるとか、一年に何日もあるとか。うざい。
六曜とか今日の運勢みたいのはとにかく目に入れないようにしている。惑わされたくない。
今回のはメルマガで来てしまった。購読停止できないな。こういうの困る。

miscarriage of justice

泥試合になってきましたー。極右の二人も登場。こんなつり記事に飛びつくほうもどうかと思いますが。。

Lib Dems urge Ofcom to investigate GB News Post Office scandal coverage
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-67943541

またしても日本きた。今度は大スキャンダル。日本でもたくさん報道されていると思いますが。
先週くらいからこの話題が増えてきて、ほんとひどい話だなーと思って聞いてましたが。3日前からFujitsu、Japanが出てきてびっくり。

Fujitsu could have to repay ‘fortune’ spent on Horizon scandal, Justice Secretary says
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/fujitsu-horizon-scandal-post-office-inquiry-compensation-b1131583.html
記事にsagaとあるように以前からの問題だったようですが。メディアが社会性のある問題を仕掛けたところがすごい。
大衆に関心を持たせると動く。日本では統一教会でしたが。埋もれている問題はたくさんある。

単語 文脈から推測できるが。補償系の単体で難しめ。
statutory
incompetence 忘れてた超基本単語。だから読み流して忘れないようにしないといけない
recompense 発音
convict よく読んでる犯罪記事では頻出
swindle - swindling 前見た
flawed
quash
bluntly 基本単語 覚えろ
Peston - ITV’s Peston - Robert Peston
across the piece
thwart
malevolence < malevolent 字面で推測できる

マイナンバーはすでに漏れていると思いますが。カードは絶対作らない。ひたすら自衛。

Fujitsu UKの駐在員は日本の新聞サイトとかで報道を確認してるのかな?株価少し下がったのかな?
(UK/EUではYahoo!は見れない。Yahoo!

Farnborough airport’s biggest critic silenced as expansion plans continue
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/jan/03/farnborough-airports-biggest-critic-silenced-as-expansion-plans-continue

単語

aerodrome
powered - the site of Britain’s first-ever powered flight
relentless 基本単語。覚えろ
belligerent
derided much-derided < deride 頻出語。覚えろ
asbo - antisocial behaviour orders
rip through - experimental jets ripped through the skies over Hampshire
surplus to requirements 発音
overrule 頻出語。覚えろ
sceptical 頻出語。覚えろ
reiterate 超基本単語。覚えろ
egregious 最近見た
displacement
