It is said that Pythagoras first discovered that the first and fourth strings when sounded together produced the harmonic interval of the octave, for doubling the weight had the same effect as halving the string.
Then Pythagoras created Pythagorean Theory of Music Cord after that.
After approximately 2000 years later, Raphaelo painted Scuola di Atene, or the School of Athens on the walls of the Stanza.
There in the painting many philosophers are identified and among them we can see Pythagoras with a board.
Today’s story is about the mystery of the board.
今日の物語は、ピタゴラス音階についてです。
ピタゴラスというのは、紀元前５７０年に生まれた、ギリシアを代表する哲学者、かつ数学者ということになります。
そのピタゴラスが、ピタゴラス音階を発見しました。
１オクターブの発見が、ピタゴラス音階の発見へとつながったと言われています。
が、それから約２０００年後、そのピタゴラスを、ラファエロが絵画にして描き残しています。
スタンザの壁画として描かれた、「アテネの学堂」という絵画の中で、です。
その左下のほうに描かれているのが、ピタゴラスです。
その横には一枚のボードがあり、ピタゴラスは、ピタゴラス音階についての説明をしていると考えられています。
で、私はそのボードに書かれた、謎の説明についての謎解きに挑戦してみました。
謎解きには、かなりの時間がかかりました。
が、これはその少し後になってわかったことですが、すでにその謎を解いていた人が別にいることを知りました。
論文として、すでに発表されていたのです。
つまり私は余儀なく、「世界初」という言葉を、取り下げざるを得ませんでした。
その謎を解くのに、かなり苦労しただけに、残念でした。
が、これで謎が終わったわけではありません。
アテネの学堂は、先にも言いましたように、ラファエロがルネッサンスの時代に描いたものです。
ピタゴラスの時代から見ても、２０００年後です。
その２０００年後に、ラファエロは、どうやって、またどうしてピタゴラスのピタゴラス音階のことを知ったのかという謎です。
同じくアテネの学堂には、当時まだ発見されたばかりの地球儀や天球儀も描かれています。
ラファエロは、博学であったといえば、それまでですが、当時の教育制度を思いやっても、またラファエロの経歴を調べてみても、それにふさわしい学歴が、浮かび上がってきません。
謎が謎を呼びます。
ともあれ、今日はもう一度、ラファエロの描いたアテネの学堂と、その中に描かれている、ピタゴラス音階について描かれたボードについて、考えてみます。

The word magi is the plural of Latin magus, borrowed from Greek μάγος magos,as used in the original Greek text of the Gospel of Matthew.
「マギ」という単語は、ラテン語の「magus」の複数形である。マタイの福音書のギリシア語のテキストに使われているように、ギリシア語から、派生したものである。
Greek magos itself is derived from Old Persian maguŝ from the Avestan magâunô, i.e., the religious caste into which Zoroaster was born
そのギリシア語の「magos」は、古代ペルシア語、つまりアヴェスタン「マガウノ」から派生したもの、つまりゾロアスター教の宗教的階級を表す語となったものである。
