お笑いの国にようこそ

本人も困っているのかも知れないが、国民はもっとつらい。

上田人権人道大使の暴言を聞いて思った。

なぜこの人が大使などに。

しかも人権人道とは！

それほどまでに、我が国には人材がいないのだろうか。

大使が使う英語ではないし、とるべき作法でもない。

参考にと思って、彼の発言を記述してみた。

(1) Certainly, Japan is not in the middle age.

(2) We are one of the most advanced country in this field.

失笑

(3) Don’t laugh!

(4) Why you are laughing!

(5) Shut up! Shut up!

(6) We are one of the most advanced country in this field.

(7) That is our proud, of course.

(8) There are still shortages, of course, shortcomings.

(9) Every country has shortages and shortcomings, but we are trying our best to improve our situation.

(10) Ladies and gentleman, on behalf of a Japanese delegation, we express sincere gratitude to the members of the committee.

数多くの文法の細かな間違いや稚拙な表現はさておき、彼の決定的なミスは(3）である。

もちろん、middle ages（中世） と言うべきところをmiddle age（中年）と言ったところもご愛嬌だが、

(2)の表現があいまいだったことによって失笑が起こったのだろう。

どちらにもとれるような、官僚的な発言だ。

もしこの大使が欧米の文化に通暁しており、外交官センスがあったとするならば、

失笑の段階で（３）および（４）ではなく、

Thank you.

と切り返すべきだっただろう。

せっかく笑いを取ったのだから、

Of course, we are one of the most advanced countries in humnity and human rights as well as humors.

と続ければなおいいだろう。

（８）もよくわからない。

Shortagesやshrtcomingsの意味が分からない。

拷問が足りないことを言っているのだろうか。

それにしても、どうなっているのだろう、この国は。

よくわからない知事や市長や大使が、国民を代表して国際的に跳梁跋扈して、よく国が持っているものだと感心する。

おそらく大多数のまともで誠実な国民が、このような不始末を支えているからなのだろう。

彼の発言が国際社会に与えた日本の損失を考えるのならば、任命責任者は重大だ。

誰も彼に全権をゆだねてはいないのだから。

面白い英語表現を見つけた。

A persons shortcoming usually refers to a lack or flaw in their personality.
To describe someone who is rude, one could say of him that, "His lack of manners is a real shortcoming."
A glutton's lack of self control could be described as a shortcoming.
Shortcomings are usually intangible in and of themselves, you can't actually see a shortcoming, only the result thereof.

A shortage refers to a condition where demand has outpaced supply and there isn't enough of an item for everyone.
When there is an oil shortage, the price of gasoline increases as the supply becomes smaller.

Shortages are usually of a more tangible nature. Water shortages, food shortages, etc.

さしずめ、上田大使は、たくさんのshortcomingsを持っているのだろう。

でもintangibleなので、誰も気づかなかったのだ。

それは only the result thereof。

あお願いだから、もう少しましな人を選んでほしい。

多くの有能な人材が、野に埋もれているではないか。
