On July 14, Seoul held a ceremony in Seoul to commemorate "N. Korean Defectors' Day," a newly designated national holiday this year.
It's aimed to increase understanding and support for N. Korean defectors.
In his speech, participated President Yoon Suk-yeol said that >"Resolving North Korean human rights issues is an important foundation for peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula, and accepting North Korean defectors is the first step toward that," and expressed to kick off upgrade of settlement-support including employment-expansion.

July 14 marks the day, when the law on the protection of N. Korean defectors was enforced in 1997.
Around 200 persons, including national assembly members, attended the ceremony, and they offered a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the process of escaping from N. Korea.
The Yoon administration has been focusing on raising the issue of human rights in N. Korea and protecting defectors.
There are around 34,000 N. Korean defectors living in S. Korea.
