MPs grilling Bob Diamond over the Libor-rigging scandal was always going to be a fractious affair.

議員のLIBOR操作スキャンダルを巡るボブ・ダイアモンド元CEO尋問は、厄介な事にならないわけがありませんでした。

And it was, except for the cheery way our Bob kept calling the Treasury Select Committee by their first names – including Tory Jesse Norman, a former Barclays banker himself.

というわけで、厄介な事になりました。
元バークレイズの行員だった保守党のジェシー・ノーマン議員他、財務相特別委員会のメンバーをファーストネームで呼び続けるボブの陽気さを除けばですが。

How nice! If not giving a certain impression about friends in high places.

なんて素敵なんでしょう！
高い地位のお友達に印象付けることは出来ませんでしたが。

“A deliberate move on his part,” a cross Jesse tweets live from the hearing. “I haven’t seen the man for 15 years, and barely then.”

「わざとらしいヤツだ」とむかっ腹のジェシーは公聴会の現場からツイートしました。
「もう15年も会ってないぞ。つか、あの頃だって殆どしらねーし」

“Really annoying that Mr Diamond is using our first names,” agrees Labour’s Teresa Pearce. “So rude.”

As the scandal rolls on, the calls for harsh penalties come loud and often.

事態が進むにつれ、厳しい処分を求める声がより大きく、より頻繁に聞かれるようになりました。

“Manipulation, rigging is completely against the rules. Everybody knows that it is wrong,” opined one talking head. “If you are allowed to do it and you only get a slap on the wrist, you will continue to do it.”

Quite. And who was this pious sage of the BBC airwaves? Why, one Nick Leeson, the rogue trader who did a spell in a Singapore jail after trying to hide losses which brought down Barings Bank.

ごもっとも。
というわけで、BBCの電波に乗ったこの敬虔な賢者は誰でしょう？
誰も彼もありません、ニック・リーソン、その人であります。
そう、ベアリングを破綻させた巨額の損失を隠そうとして捕まり、シンガポールで豚箱入りしていた、かのならず者トレーダーです。

Asked if criminal prosecutions were the only way to keep traders in line, he shot back: “Absolutely”.

トレーダーを行儀良くさせておくには刑事訴追しかないんですかね、と尋ねられると、「間違いない」と即答。

No zealot like a convert.

転向者ほどの狂信者はいませんです。

Hot dog stand-off　（ホットドッグ・スタンドオフ）

Diary loves a pun but Michael Bloomberg, founder of the financial news service and New York mayor, does not.

シティ・ダイアリーはオヤジギャグが大好きですが、ブルームバーグの創設者でありニューヨーク市長のマイケル・ブルームバーグ氏はお嫌いです。

Addressing a weigh-in for a Fourth of July hot-dog eating contest on Coney Island – all part of the job – Bloomberg kept them coming thick and fast at first.

7月4日にコニーアイランドで行われたホットドッグ大食い大会でスピーチをすることになったブルームバーグ市長。
最初はオヤジギャグがどんどこ出てきました。

He wondered aloud if the “dogged pursuers will finally ketchup [to the champions], cut the mustard, and be pronounced the wiener.

市長は聞こえるように、「しつこい追跡者はいつか（チャンピオンに）キャッチアップし、期待に答え、ウィーナーの宣言を受ける」だろうか、と仰いました。

“No question, it’s going to be a dog fight”.

「間違いない。これは乱闘になる」

But it was a pun too far for Bloomberg, who broke off to ask the crowd: “Who wrote this s---?”

しかしながら、これが市長にとっては最後の藁だったようです。
ブルームバーグ市長は突然スピーチを止めると観衆に尋ねました。
「誰だ、こんな**を書いたのは？」

Clearly not him.

市長様でないことは明らかです。

あらやだ（笑）。
