Takahashi, a left-hander signed to a minor league contract, is the biggest surprise of the group, if only because he has pitched his entire career in Japan. He has shown excellent control of several pitches including a screwball, and he changes speeds well.

In eight and a third innings, he has given up 4 hits and struck out 10 while earning two wins and one save. Manuel, who called Takahashi impressive, will probably have him pitch after Figueroa on Sunday.

Takahashi, who won 79 games and saved 15 in 10 years with the Yomiuri Giants, has developed a cult following of sorts in Florida. On Thursday, he laid down a sacrifice bunt in the ninth inning. When he arrived at first base, a group of fans in the stands yelled “Banzai!” and waved their arms, drawing an amused nod from Takahashi.
