His velocity came back just fine after his shoulder rehab, and he has reportedly been diligently working out this offseason in order to avoid a repeat of last year's campaign. Still, he was throwing a lot of pitches as usual and not working deep into games when he returned late in the season, so we need to temper our expectations for 2010. Continuing to walk close to five batters per nine innings will make it a feast-or-famine bumpy ride. There's clearly value still to be had here, but don't pay for anything close to his 18-win, 2.90 ERA season of 2008. Matsuszaka is fighting some upper back soreness as camp opens, but it's not expected to prevent him from being ready for Opening Day.
