カレーは認知症に効果あり？

米国の研究者によると、週に1回、2回カレーを食べれば、
アルツハイマー・認知症に効果があると報告された。



この理由は、カレーには、アミロイドたんぱく質斑の拡大を予防する作用があり、
アルツハイマー・認知症の原因の一つは、アミロイドたんぱく質斑の脳への沈殿で
あるとされているからである。

特に、アミロイド斑は、アミロイドβ（ベータ）蛋白（たんぱく）が蓄積したもので、
アルツハイマー病患者の脳にみられる。

一方、アミロイド斑は、わずか24時間で形成されることが、英科学誌「Nature」に2008年に報告されている。
そして、いったんアミロイド斑が発生すると、近辺の神経細胞がほぼ即座に損傷を受けることも判っている。

Weekly curry 'may fight dementia'

Eating a curry once or twice a week could help prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, a US researcher suggests.

The key ingredient is curcumin, a component of the spice turmeric.

Curcumin appears to prevent the spread of amyloid protein plaques - thought to cause dementia - in the brain.

最近、英国の研究者が、お酒を飲む人は、飲まない人に比べ、「胆石」

この結果を追い風に、晩酌の酒量を増やせるかと思いきや、
男性の1日当たりの飲酒適量は、ビールで500ml以下とのアドバイス付である。

果して、缶ビール1本の量にて、飲み会を楽しむ事ができるであろうか？

結局、この科学的な証明は、お酒を飲む人には、飲むことを正当化する上で
全く役立ちそうにない。
逆に、他人（妻）に酒量を規制されそうな報告である。。

Alcohol reduces gallstone risk

Drinking a moderate amount of alcohol protects against the development of gallstones, UK researchers say.

The researchers said it had been suggested that alcohol might reduce gallstones through its effects on cholesterol but the magnitude of the effect had not been calculated.

Alcohol was known to increase levels of "good" HDL cholesterol which was also known to be protective against cardiovascular disease and which could alter the composition of cholesterol in the bile.

Drug hope for advanced melanoma

Scientists say they have developed a drug that can treat the most deadly form of skin cancer in its most advanced, incurable stages.

Malignant melanoma is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the UK, largely due to sun exposure.

An experimental drug PLX4032 (R7204) could help many patients with incurable disease live longer with the disease in check, early trial results suggest.

PLX4032 works by seeking out and destroying tumour cells carrying the BRAF mutation implicated in 60% malignant melanomas.

This could not only help to shrink the skin cancer, but also delay its spread.

Currently, only a small proportion of people - less than 5% - live more than two years if their cancer has spread around the body.

Early findings

In a phase I study involving 16 patients with BRAF-positive melanoma, over half saw the extent of their cancer reduce by at least 30%.

Patients treated with PLX4032 lived for a median of six months without their disease getting worse and more than half experienced significant shrinkage of their tumours.

This included patients where the cancer had spread to the liver, lung and bone.

Roche and its partner Plexxikon told delegates at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Florida that they now plan larger trials to further test the drug's safety and check things like what dose is best.

They also hope to make a diagnostic test to easily spot which patients have BRAF-positive melanoma.

In the UK, more than 10,400 people are diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year.

"Melanoma is difficult to treat when it is at an advanced stage so it's crucial to find new treatments to help beat the disease.

"When melanoma is diagnosed early, treatment is often simpler and more likely to be effective. If you notice a change in the size, shape or colour of a mole or other patch of skin, make sure you get it checked out by your doctor without delay.

"Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation, from the sun or from sunbeds, is the leading cause of skin cancer.

"With this year's summer expected to be hotter than the last, it's important that we don't let sunburn catch us out. Whether at home or abroad, use shade, clothing and sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher to protect your skin."

Senior executives at General Motors are expected to meet later to discuss proceedings for a widely expected filing for bankruptcy protection.

They are likely to firm up the details of how to completely restructure what was once the world's largest car company, under judicial supervision.

GM's sales have been hit hard by the financial crisis and the firm has received $20bn (￡12bn) in state aid.

The Obama administration had given GM a 1 June deadline to submit a viable revival plan or file for bankruptcy.

A Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by GM would rank as one of the largest bankruptcies in US history.

見分ける方法は、相手の目を見て、笑っている間に、
まばたきをした場合は、本当に心から笑っており、
笑っている間、まばたきが無かったり、目元にしわがよっている場合は、
残念ながら作り笑いとのことである。

科学的には、脳が意識的に笑いを作り出すときには、
まばたきの筋肉はコントロールできないので、口元、
目元が笑っていてもまばたきは起こらないとのことである。

Most people are surprisingly bad at spotting fake smiles. One possible explanation for this is that it may be easier for people to get along if they don't always know what others are really feeling.

Although fake smiles often look very similar to genuine smiles, they are actually slightly different, because they are brought about by different muscles, which are controlled by different parts of the brain.

Fake smiles can be performed at will, because the brain signals that create them come from the conscious part of the brain and prompt the zygomaticus major muscles in the cheeks to contract. These are the muscles that pull the corners of the mouth outwards.

Genuine smiles, on the other hand, are generated by the unconscious brain, so are automatic. When people feel pleasure, signals pass through the part of the brain that processes emotion. As well as making the mouth muscles move, the muscles that raise the cheeks – the orbicularis oculi and the pars orbitalis – also contract, making the eyes crease up, and the eyebrows dip slightly.

Lines around the eyes do sometimes appear in intense fake smiles, and the cheeks may bunch up, making it look as if the eyes are contracting and the smile is genuine. But there are a few key signs that distinguish these smiles from real ones. For example, when a smile is genuine, the eye cover fold - the fleshy part of the eye between the eyebrow and the eyelid - moves downwards and the end of the eyebrows dip slightly.

新型インフルエンザが、依然、世界的に拡大している最中、
カンボジアでは、新たにマラリアの進化（薬が効かない）が報告された。

マラリアは、熱帯から亜熱帯に広く分布する原虫感染症。高熱や頭痛、吐き気などの症状を呈する。悪性の場合は意識障害や腎不全などを起こし死亡する。（Wikipedia)

原因については、現在、調査中であるが、この問題は、地球温暖化に伴い、
人間への感染範囲は、拡大することを意味している。

我々は、地球の生命と環境とまさに連鎖しいると、改めて認識する事件である。

In a small community in Western Cambodia, scientists are puzzling over why malaria parasites seem to be developing a resistance to drugs - and fearing the consequences.

In the past, artesunates have always cleared malaria parasites from the blood in two or three days. But after four days of monitored treatment, Chhem Bunchhin was still testing positive for parasites.

The concern is that this could be the start of emerging resistance to the artemesinin family of drugs. If full-blown resistance did develop, it would be extremely dire.

"This is by far the most effective drug we have," explained Dr Bethell.

"And there are no new drugs coming through the system in the next few years."

Dr Delia Bethell says the reason for the resistance is a mystery

One factor could be the inappropriate use of drugs, related to a lack of medical supervision.

This resistance must be contained urgently, because its spread would be a global health disaster.

Resistance to previous malaria drugs caused major loss of life in Africa.

"If the same thing happens again, the spread of a resistant parasite from Asia to Africa, then that will have devastating consequences for malaria control."

もともと肥満は、健康によくないことは知られているが、

25以下を心掛けると良い。

肥満： 25 - 29.9
高度肥満： 30 以上

例えば、体重72Kg, 身長174cmの人は、72/(1.74 x 1.74)　=23.78　（正常）です。

People who are overweight or obese in middle-age run the risk of being frail in later life, say Finnish researchers.

A study of more than 1,000 men found the highest risk of death and illness in those who put on weight in their 40s but lost it when they got older.

'Frailty syndrome'

Study leader Dr Timo Strandberg, said it seemed the unhealthy pattern of weight in their 40s was causing frailty in later life probably due to underlying cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure and early stages of diabetes.

"Frailty syndrome", where older people have weight loss, muscle weakness, exhaustion and struggle with even small amounts of physical activity, is attracting increasing attention from old-age researchers.

"It is important because frailty is associated with death and a great deal of disability," he said.

One report said that about 400 badly wounded patients had been left behind, along with more than 100 bodies awaiting burial.

When Cyclone Nargis tore through Burma's delta region this time last year, it left 140,000 people dead and two million others without food, shelter or a way to earn a living.
But perhaps the most shocking aspect of the disaster was the military government's indifference to the suffering of its own people.

The ruling generals said Burma did not need "chocolate bars donated by foreign countries", and refused to allow aid into the region for nearly three weeks.

The international community was appalled, and eventually - after intense diplomatic lobbying - Burmese leaders were persuaded to accept foreign assistance.

A rare blue diamond has sold for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.5m; ￡6.2m) at auction in Geneva.
It weighs 7.03 carats, is smaller than a penny piece, and is one of only a handful of blue diamonds in existence.

The anonymous phone bidder has yet to name the gem, mounted on a platinum ring, auctioneers Sotheby's said.

The diamond was found in Cullinan mine in South Africa last year, and its clarity was graded as flawless - the highest designation.
Auctioneer David Bennett said: "It is a new world record price for a blue diamond."

'Beyond beautiful'

"For people who are looking to buy something that nobody else has, or somebody who wants something that is beyond beautiful, a blue diamond is going to be very difficult to find, so when they appear on the market, you have to have a go."
