Identity Crisis

2005-09-21 | Weblog
I am taking a course "Language Diversity in Education". Most of the students are Americans. In today's class I found that so many classmates are struggling with their identities. "Where are you from?" is a tricky question to the people whose parents or grandparents immigrated. An oriental looking student said that she usually answers "I'm from Philadelphia." Then, she will be asked "Where did your grandparents come from?" She identifies herself with American, so she hates to be asked this question.
On the contrary, according to a student from NY, New Yorker will answer "I'm from Italy" or "I'm from Puerto Rico." even though they cannot speak Italian or Spanish. Although my classmate from NY says "I'm Puerto Rican" in the US, she said "I'm American" when she traveled to Puerto Rico. That's an identity paradox. (I do not know it's a right term.)

Another student said that he's Hispanic (He looks white). He went to a White-dominant elementary school. While he was in the school, he changed his name which sounded like White, because his real name embarassed him. After he graduated Secondary school, he started using his real name.

Next day

I was horrified to see my right eye swollon in the morning.
In the evening, it healed. This might be a mosquito-bite, because it took so long time to heal.
Again, I really appreciate my friends because they called me and set up a dinner to have fun.

very sad incident

My boyfriend broke up with me last night. I am going through a hard time. This morning my right eye popped up and it was so red. It's 10:30 pm, but my eye is still swollen. My contact lenses got dirty because of tears I shed after putting them on. Because I cannot see things clearly, I am a little afraid that I might run into something by bike on my way home.

I really appreciate my friends who gave me kinds words, came to see me, and took me out for dinner after I told them about our breakup.

It's been a while

since I wrote my last diary. I was very busy with the summer course. The class was very demanding and the instructor was a hard grader. Because I worked so hard on this class, I got a good grade!
On the next day I submitted my final paper of the course, I flew to Alaska. My boyfriend (now he is my ex) who was working at Utah at that time flew from Utah and we met in Alaska. We stayed in his relative's house. I stayed there for 10 days. I went for fishing, saw the glacier, and went to a zoon. I could not see bears except at the zoon, but I found a very fresh bear's pooh.
After I came back from Philadelphia, I was busy with the dictionary job which I had been working for a whole summer. My mother and sister was coming to visit me in early September and I wanted to finish it before they came.
My mother and sister came to Philadelphia on Sep. 5th. We went to see a baseball game, city hall tour, and Opera restaurant. My sister left for Japan earlier than my mother. Mother, my (ex)boyfriend, and I went to NY and Lancaster. We had a great time together.
The fall semester of the school began and I decided what courses I take. One of the courses is very demanding and tough, but I had no choice! I will do my best. Wish me luck!
