今日、私の周りは静かだった・・・同僚に選挙権を持った人は、いない。生徒のあいだにも選挙ネタは、ない。アメリカにいる実感、薄め。それもそのはず、ここはカリフォルニアの日本人補習校だから。少し、淋しい。
4年前とは対照的だ。その頃、バージニアの高校で働いていた。アメリカ人の同僚も生徒も、日々熱く論じていた。そして、オバマ氏が当選した夜中、女子寮からは歓喜の声が聞こえてきた。歴史的瞬間を、肌で感じた。なんだか、懐かしい。
12年前は、ブッシュ対ゴア、だった。私はミシガンで教育実習中で、小学4年生の生徒らに討論をさせたところ、彼等は本気になって泣いたり怒ったりしていた。アメリカ人の原点を見た気がした。非常に、懐かしい。
アメリカ人は、幼いうちから政治ネタに熱い、という印象がある。今日も数名の5才児が“I voted”というシールを胸に、登園してきた。もちろん本物ではないが、多くの現地校で擬似選挙をするからだ。政治に疎い私には、ある意味、羨ましい。
