2．既に知らされたことであったのに（10:14-21）

Romans 10: Mission to the Jews
1. zealous but not understanding (10:1-13)
Paul continues to address the problem of the Jews. He says that they are indeed sincere and religiously zealous, but they do not understand (v. 2). Their faith is a self-satisfied, hypocritical faith because it is a kind of boasting about the fervor of their faith and the righteousness of their way of life. It is not a God-centered and God-following life (v.3). They love the law, but in reality it reveals the reality of the human sinner and compels him to seek the salvation of Christ. But they do not accept it as such (v.4). The way we accept the law is also self-serving.
If we want to be good and pleasing to God by obeying the law, we should practice every law thoroughly (v. 5). Verses 6 and 7 are quotations from Deuteronomy 30:11-14, which was a common saying among the people of that day. Paul is trying to say, "If you try to be a good person, your efforts will either be betrayed or you will become hypocritical. O Jews who go through life with such unsaved thoughts, you do not need to pull Jesus down from heaven or call Him back up after He died on the cross to earn salvation. Jesus is already resurrected. The Jesus who died on the cross is with you now. The only question is whether or not you will accept Him as your Savior by faith.
Paul goes on to quote from the Old Testament, verse 11 of Isaiah 28:16 and verse 13 of Joel 2:32. Paul's point is that the only way for us to achieve salvation of the heart is to follow the way that God has shown us. In the end, as I have said before, it comes down to believing in the cross of Jesus as the sacrifice God prepared for us for the forgiveness of our sins, believing in the power of His resurrection to work in our new life, and confessing Jesus as our Savior. Jews and Greeks alike can be saved in this way (v.12).

2. even though it was already known (10:14-21)
The second half says that without this telling of Jesus, no one would believe. Surely you cannot believe what you have never heard. They need a preacher of Jesus (v.14). If God has shown us the way of salvation, we will not know it unless someone tells us about it (v.15). For faith begins with hearing.
But has such salvation by faith never been spoken of before? Have the Jews, God's chosen people, never heard of such salvation by grace? (v. 18). Paul quotes Isaiah 53:1 to say. No, they had already heard. But they would not listen, he says (v. 16). Then in verse 18, quoting Psalm 19:4, Paul says, "But they would not listen" (v. 18). In fact, the message was not just for the Jews, but for the whole world. But no one, he says, listened to the message of the prophets sent by God.
Isn't that because they were not spoken in a way that was well understood, verse 19? No, no, no, Paul says. They understood. The proof is that when the Gentiles accepted the message and actually received salvation, did they not become angry and envious and stumble? In the end, he says, it is largely a matter of sin, of a stubborn heart that is natural and unwilling to change its ways. We all have stubborn hearts to varying degrees. However, the result of being a naturalist when it comes to salvation is that we retreat into that stubbornness, and we will never be able to attain salvation. There is true salvation in following God's revealed ways, not selfish ways.
