hope thatの後には、文章がくる。thatは省略されることもある。
この文の場合、Ｓ＋Vの前に、withで始まるフレーズが先にきているので、構造がわかりにくい。

recently

recentlyは、過去形と現在完了で使う。

whateverの前置詞化

Whatever the statements of some more conservative Japanese politicians,

一般的には最後に「are」が入り、節となるが、whateverが前置詞化し、「are」が脱落している。

文中のthough

thoughは、多くの場合、文の先頭にきて従属節を作るが、くだけた表現として文中で使われることもある。
この場合、一つ前の文章に対して、「しかし」という意味を表す。
