China steps into gap left by faltering US

Bitter memories of the Sino-Japanese war are being swept away as China becomes Japan's biggest export market, writes Malcolm Moore in Hong Kong
中国が日本にとって最大の輸出市場になり、中日戦争の苦々しい記憶は一掃されつつある。
For the first time since the Sino-Japanese war ended in 1945, China has become Japan's largest export market.
1945年に中日戦争が終結して以来初めて、中国は日本にとって最大の輸出市場となった。
According to data from Japan's finance ministry, China overtook the United States in July as the biggest buyer of Japanese goods.
日本財務省のデータによれば、7月、中国はアメリカを抜いて、日本製品の最大の購買国となったとのことだ。
Three years ago, China was only the third most important market for Japan, importing ￡40bn of goods while ￡70bn went to the US.
3年前、日本にとっての中国の市場としての重要性は三番目に過ぎず、対米輸出は￡700億だったが、対中輸出は￡400億だった。
However, American consumers, troubled by the credit crisis and higher petrol prices, appear to have lost their taste for Japanese cars, with sales dropping nearly 11pc. Toyota has already posted dismal figures this year, with profits in the first quarter dropping 28pc.
しかし、信用危機とガソリン価格の高騰に苦しむアメリカの消費者は、日本車の購買意欲を失ったらしく、売上は11%近くも減少した。
トヨタは既に今年は散々な数字を発表しており、Q1の利益は28%も減少している。
The carmaker has now abandoned its target of selling 10.4m cars in 2009.
同車メーカーは今や、2009年は1,040万台売り上げる、という目標を放棄してしまった。
Stepping into their shoes, the Chinese have significantly upped their purchases of cars (31.9pc), high quality diesel fuel (124pc) and heavy machinery (23.6pc).
中国はそこへ入り込み、車+31.9%、高品質ディーゼル燃料+124%、そして重機+23.6%と、輸入量を大幅に増加させた。
While Japan is reaping the advantages of China's emerging middle-clas s, some economists w arned that a slowdown in the Chinese economy after the Olympic Games could plunge Japan into difficulties.
日本は中国の進攻中流層に跳び付いているが、一部のエコノミストは、オリンピック後の中国経済の減速は、日本を難しい状況に陥れるかもしれない、と警告している。
"This is a temporary rise in exports," said Takeshi Minami, at Norinchukin Research Institute. "You cannot expect much help from the Chinese economy after the Olympics". Michael Taylor at Lombard Street Research has also pencilled in a drop in exports.

Much of the imported diesel is being used to power the trucks rebuilding Sichuan after May's calamitous earthquake killed 7 0,000 people in the region.

Overall, Japan's exports to China rose by 16.8pc to a record 1.29 trillion yen (￡6.4bn), while there was an 11.5pc fall in the value of goods going to the US to 1.28 trillion yen. The fact that China is now consuming more Japanese goods than the whole of Europe combined, shows the crucial importance of the Middle Kingdom to its historic foe.
全体的に見て、対米輸出総額は11.5%減少して1.28兆円になりながらも、日本の対中輸出は16.8%増加して、記録的な1.29兆円に達した。
中国が現在は、ヨーロッパを全て合わせたよりも沢山の日本製品を消費している、という事実は、歴史的敵国にとっての中華帝国の重大性を示している。
China's dominant position has emerged as Japan flirts with recession, its economy shrinking by 0.6pc in the second quarter. The Japanese government has already warned that its six-year run of consistent growth is in danger of being derailed. The Bank of Japan said earlier this week that it was concerned about inflation and that growth would be "sluggish".
経済がQ2は0.6%縮小した日本が不況に見舞われる中で、中国の支配的立場は明らかになった。
日本政府は既に、6年に亘る経済成長が止まる危険にある、と警告を出した。

The trade figures showed an 86.6pc drop in Japan's trade surplus, because of weak demand from the US and a growing taste for Chinese products. The sudden blooming of bilateral trade between China and Japan comes after years of niggling enmity.
貿易データは、日本の経済黒字が86.6%縮小したことを示したが、これはアメリカからの需要が軟化していることと、中国製品の人気が高まっていることが原因だ。

Just three years ago, riots broke out across China in protest at what was seen as Japanese insensitivity about the war in its history textbooks. The behaviour of Japanese soldiers against Chinese civilians is still a raw topic and is frequently dramatised on television.

The Chinese also felt aggrieved by the visits made by the former Japanese prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi, to the Yasukuni Shrine, a Shinto site which honours the war dead, including 14 confirmed war criminals.

However, Hu Jintao, the Chinese president, has reined in nationalist and hawkish attitudes to Japan. A series of high-level meetings have taken place between top Chinese politicians and their Japanese counterparts, culminating in President Hu's state visit to Japan in May, the first such trip in a decade and only the second since the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

Trade between China and Britain has also reached record levels, with the UK exporting more than ￡2bn of goods and services in the first five months of the year, a 44pc rise from 2007. Chinese imports grew 10pc in the same period to ￡7.763bn.
